One of the thing I love about Outlast is as soon as you realize how bad it is your character is like "TIME TO GET TF OUT!!" He doesn't stick around to solve the mystery or "Stop Umbrella" he is like - Later!!
I don’t know which one I like better. Well, outlast definitely. I always preferred SH over RE, but even SH you can fight back. Anyways, I think the lack of defence adds to the horror and may add a bit of realism.

Someone should tell her to really read Miles' notes he makes after recording a certain event. They show off a lot of his personality and what he thinks of certain situations. Oh and if you wanna find out more about the Asylum, its inhabitants and what they were doing in there try and get and read as much documents as you can. Outlast 1 has such a incredible story and world, but a lot of it isn't shoved in your face (almost like DOOM).
Man these games are great. The only drawback is they kind of lose their replay value once you beaten them because then you know where all the jump scares are, especially with this first one. If they somehow managed to make one that randomly generated jump scares it would be perfection.

Shame, it's a great game, not remotely scary if you grew up with a diet of decent horror.
Playing this game wasn't nearly as scary for me as seeing Marz play in that generator segment. My heart was racing.
