Definitively a scam to make more profit by forcing you to buy your food from the overpriced restaurent of the place. That's impossible to do in Montréal as our four universities are within the city, with three being in the downtown area. You literally have 100+ restaurants withing a 10 minutes walk distance. Plus cinemas. Plus all sort of stores and shops. There are also universities in Laval and Longueuil...
Most dorms don’t have a kitchen but I’ve never heard of them telling you no air fryer or anything like that. Imagine paying like 6k every 3 months to live somewhere and they take your air fryer 😂😂

Ever since For Rent came out I’ve been having so much fun building dorms but it’s such a dilemma because both residential rentals and dorms have such nice features that are wasted by not really having them be cross pack compatible. I love the customization of the dorms with gender and club rules but obviously need the definition of actual rooms and multiple active sims on one residential rental. Really wish they had put more thought into this opportunity :(
could definitely use the extra empty room upstairs for storing old/broken furniture from debug or something along those lines with a fake doorway so it's like where the university keeps spare crap for the dorms
None of the dorms on my campus (Texas) had kitchens. Hot plates, portable stoves or electric skillets were contraband. I think it's due to insurance reasons. But I had a mini fridge and microwave. This is fairly typical of American dorms. Often, campuses have apartments, which had kitchens, as an option as well.
I cannot fathom why they won't let us have kitchens. Every single college I'm looking into has some kind of kitchen with a stove and oven in the dorms, at least for upperclassmen. JUST LET US BAKE LATE-NIGHT FUNFETTI COOKIES GOD DAMN

Most of the comments I’ve seen talking about how they weren’t allowed kitchens were people who went to school 15-20 years ago or who went to older schools where you can’t have kitchens because of building safety reasons. Even googling it, results say that unless you’re at an old campus that hasn’t renovated to add them, you’re likely to have a kitchen, kitchenette, or shared kitchen area in your dorm. Unless you’re looking at responses from Reddit where the people went to school in the 80s and 90s. Not all schools have kitchens, not all schools have living areas either, but it’s very common to have them.
I used to try and complete one room at at time, and spend so much time cluttering. Now I just do base furniture and layout, then decorate, and find it less overwhelming.

i had a microwave and a fridge at university. so your food needed to be something you could make without heat. i had a lot of salads . my dorm had a little living room and a huge bathroom with a walk in shower because i'm disabled. the bedroom was separate and there was a loft bed that was brought down to where i could get in it. there was also a desk. it was a really awesome dorm actually

I think its all the full size windows being in the actual bedrooms, we wouldn't do that for bedrooms here. For all the common rooms but not bedrooms. I say that, but I love the actual build, and love the interior. Personally, I thought they did a good job with dorms in Sims 2 and 3. Tiny bedrooms with study areas, computer rooms, small living areas, actual kitchens, lots of activities.
Back when I was living in my university's dorms a little over a decade ago, we didn't have a kitchen and were required to buy a mel plan for the cafeteria. We weren't allowed to keep toaster ovens or burners in our dorms either, only micorwaves. Of course a lot of people including me still had one, we would just hide it on inspection days.
My uni accommodation all 3 years had a double bed and ensuite, but shared a kitchen. In the last year I ended up getting a studio accomodation and it was the nicest place I've ever lived, I went into debt to stay there and had to work like 5 months at maccies after uni to pay off the debt lmao
American students are allowed to take out 100k in student debt but aren't allowed a kitchen in dorm buildings cuz that would be dangerous 🙃 Also, that way the university can upset them on meal plans...
I have lived in a residential building for students, it was not directly on a big campus like in America cause I’m French but it was next a « litterature uni »and « social uni » separately in the neighborhood. We rent a little appartment of one room (studio) and in each we had a bathroom (coming with a bathtub !) and a little kitchen space (« kitchenette »). The only community space we had was the shared laundromat on the first floor. I was happy to have my own personal space. 😊
I wish they made it like the old uni packs where you could claim a door I brought books and a football for my sim before and all the other sims in the dorms walked in and stole everything could pick up and even used my sims laptop had to lock the door to everyone so no roommate and then buy the books again
First click the door and select “Lock for Everyone” then click it again and select “Allow Access To” and select the two roommates. You can also lock your laptop through security settings, preventing anyone from using it or stealing it.
Its the same in barracks in the Army. Order delivery or go to the chow hall. We had microwaves in the "kitchenette"/common area that is ridiculously small and a fridge at least
I can’t speak for every American university but at least in the average university in the Midwest we just have mini fridges and microwaves and that is all we had to go a dining hall or make friends with someone who lived in an off campus apartment and had a kitchen if we wanted real food 😂
At least at bigger colleges it is common to have a cafeteria in the dorm buildings but yeah for smaller campuses they will make you take a hike for a proper dinner lol

Nothing that can catch fire is allowed in dorms. Can you imagine if a dumb kid started a fire? How many people would be affected? I lost my home because a fire started in the apartment next to mine 12 years ago. I'm still working through it.

One thing that drives me crazy about lovestruck is that discover university has a feature where you can set a dorm to be male/female only, so why couldn't they utilize that in the lovestruck dating app?
I remember you saying that you struggle with IBs, I am assuming that's why you needed the ensuite bathroom. In my case my periods are horrible and I wasn't about to crawl down the hall when I'm writhing in pain to take care of that. My uni was nice enough to consider it a disability bc of my doctor's note so the price came down a bit.
The reason you can't put things on those shelves, similar to the cubby from the new gamer kit, is because they're regular sized objects. Only "tiny" objects fit in those sections. This is the case for a majority of the shelving in the game, where you can put some normal sized objects on them and some spaces are reserved for tiny objects. The shelves, for instance, largely and almost entirely, if not entirely, only allow tiny objects. You can't really tell what can go where until you've attempted to put objects in those spaces, so until you're used to the shelving and know what can go where, it's kinda just a guessing game. Is it weird? Yeah. But that's just how it works lol (you also have to guess which objects are small enough to use those areas of the shelving, etc. Basically, anything that will fit on, say, the back of a toilet is considered a tiny object. it's annoying that there are no markers for what objects are what size and what shelving they fit, but that's how it works).
My dorm building and all dorm buildings on my campus have communal kitchens. In real life colleges usually deny kitchens because of insurance, fire, and other safety concerns but in the sims??? Where non-flammable ovens and shit exist??? Where you can replace or fix an appliance in two seconds??? Ridiculous-
My Sims regularly go to the university... From home. I had Sims live in Britcherster... But NOT on campus. They lived in the village of Britchester. WHAT ! FORBIDDEN items are : Stove and outdoor cooking. That's STUPID ! ANY student housing outside of the USA not only allow those, they are provided. A stove is supposed to be standard equipment. Someone NEED to make a mod to get rid of that brainless limitation. From Get to Work, there is a debug item plunger. Place one in each toilets. Have an access to the roof and place the observatory and a rocket up there.

That's good for you but it is very very VERY common to not have kitchens or full kitchens in dorms in the US.

That's wonderful, but in the US it's pretty rare. Some dorms in the US do have full kitchens, but usually it's a half kitchen or no kitchen.

You can fix the camera bobbing thing by changing the camera.ini file to 'ignorelotlevel: true' (there are 3 instances of it in the file)

In my case my periods are horrible and I wasn't about to crawl down the hall when I'm writhing in pain to take care of that. My uni was nice enough to consider it a disability bc of my doctor's note so the price came down a bit.

The reason you can't put things on those shelves, similar to the cubby from the new gamer kit, is because they're regular sized objects. Only "tiny" objects fit in those sections. This is the case for a majority of the shelving in the game, where you can put some normal sized objects on them and some spaces are reserved for tiny objects. The shelves, for instance, largely and almost entirely, if not entirely, only allow tiny objects. You can't really tell what can go where until you've attempted to put objects in those spaces, so until you're used to the shelving and know what can go where, it's kinda just a guessing game. Is it weird? Yeah. But that's just how it works lol (you also have to guess which objects are small enough to use those areas of the shelving, etc. Basically, anything that will fit on, say, the back of a toilet is considered a tiny object. it's annoying that there are no markers for what objects are what size and what shelving they fit, but that's how it works).
6 43...... I had to modify the config file sims 3 camera to ignore building levels. That takes care of the camera bobbing and drifting.

My dorm building and all dorm buildings on my campus have communal kitchens. In real life colleges usually deny kitchens because of insurance, fire, and other safety concerns but in the sims??? Where non-flammable ovens and shit exist??? Where you can replace or fix an appliance in two seconds??? Ridiculous-
What about study room? PCs? Anything to raise logic skill would be also lovely

WHAT ! FORBIDDEN items are : Stove and outdoor cooking. That's STUPID ! ANY student housing outside of the USA not only allow those, they are provided. A stove is supposed to be standard equipment.
