- It has been a fierce race against time for European nations looking to fill up their gas storage ahead of winter.
New deals were brokered, old gas facilities reopened, and measures to control consumption imposed - all in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Their efforts and a mild start to the winter have paid off: more than 95% of the EU's gas storage was filled by mid-November. That's above the 80% target the European Commission set back in March.
That's easing price pressures on consumers - but Europe's energy crisis is far from over. In fact, energy experts tell CNBC it is next winter they are most worried about.

From my view in the US, the Russians did not begin weaponizing the EU natural gas deliveries until after the US/EU sanctions against RU were put in place. The entire EU benefited greatly in the partnership to import Russian gas & oil over the decades, remaining competitive in global chemicals and manufacturing. Now that the EU has sworn off the lower cost Russian oil & gas pipeline supplied energy, and is shifting to LNG at 400% higher cost, how will the EU remain a competitor in the Global Market?
The EU signed it's own death warrant, and this is what will ultimately lead to its demise as the political and economic fallout will be gargantuan. The entire EU was built around Germany, and Germanys success was built on cheap Russian energy. Now that's gone Germany is already in big trouble. Its citizens only have hot water for 4 hours a day in any building where the hot water is communally controlled. Inflation is 11%, and massive industries like BASF and BMW are closing down and moving to China. Many Eastern European countries like Poland Czech Republic and Slovakia live off being part of the German supply chain... They are dead in the water. And Poland is already tired of Refugees... But another 7 million are heading their way for Christmas.

Agree. There is a bit of a misinformation here. It was not Russia that wanted to stop selling to the EU. It is mostly the U.S, because they wanted to sell their LNG to the EU instead at predatory prices. Russia wanted the EU to pay for their product in Rubles because the U.S and EU sanctioned Russia which made dollar useless to Russia at the moment since they are not allowed to use it and some refused to pay in Rubles. So Russia had to lessen or stop selling altogether to countries that want to pay for their oil and gas in a currency (USD) that they cannot use and that currently have no benefit for their economy.
The situation is very complicated indeed. Our crew recently filmed another big problem of this energy crisis. Europe Union is trying to push green energy, like biomass. While the EU says using pellets is sustainable, our team found some dark secrets about this energy source.
Out of the available options nuclear is the best. It produces vast amounts of reliable energy and is the most environmentally friendly out of the available options. It also has the most room for improvement.
It can be improved with things like molten salt and liquid metal reactors that can not melt down, fast reactors that can get rid of long lived nuclear waste by fissioning transuranic actinides, breeder reactors that instead of running on rare uranium 235 can breed fuel from far more common uranium 238 and thorium 232, reactors that run at high temperature and low pressure and can convert heat into electricity at higher efficiency, higher temperatures also enable 100% air cooled reactors so vast amounts of cooling water become unnecessary, etc.

Europeans are rich with a deep pocket, They have no problem paying the energy price.
Some of the numbers are simply wrong. E.g. the EU imported 38% of its gas from Russia not 52%. So far only the chemicals industry has been hit drastically. And there you have to differentiate: highly energy intensive products make up only a fraction of the products and coudl be sourced differently, while they high value added products use less energy.
The US always had cheap energy, most of the low value high energy production is already there or in other cheap energy countries.
It's more than just the chemical industry.... the German government has bailed out Uniper and VNG.

What? German Chancellor personally visited that turbine in storage and offered Russians to take it. Russians have been throttling gas flows to Europe since summer of 2021. Then a year later they cut their contractually binding flows to 20%. When the contract breach penalties started to mount and blackmail failed Russians blew up NS1 and one strand of NS2. The miraculously surviving strand of NS2 is reserved for further blackmail.

Such and other type of crisis usually do not affect me who live in the center of the Europe, but the energy crisis has been felt, specially at public places, there are cut backs felt on the warming up local institutions such as colleagues, highway is cutting back public lightning and basically every city is going to shorten the time public Christmas lights will be on.
However, the energy consumption is expected to lower once the cold weather ends, and we will rise out of the energy crisis, in hope we further invest in new energy inovation and infrastructure.
I don't think so. The energy consumption is expected to rise once the hot summer begins, and you'll still be in energy crisis. Cutting back public lightning and so forth would still be in place.

Wind and Solar aren't going to help much in the next 3-4 years. From now til then, where will Europe get its gas from? The reserves aren't going to last that long, LNG aren't going to increase that quickly either. The math just does not add up. I just don't see how Europe could fix this aside resuming trade with Russia.
The only way EUs can survive is to put a price cap on US's LNG or the price will just shoot up 10 times from the current price in the up coming months.

Tolstoi is the vice-president of the Douma, he promises Hell on Ukraine-backers' economies (all NATO, including EU, US, UK, CA, AU and JP), he promises Russia is ready for years of fight ahead and it's still in "special military operation", not *yet* "war". He reminds that "The West" is a minor part of the world population (up to 12%) and it's not that difficult to sink the system -- I guess he means by shutting down all commodities sent there in exchange of worthless dollars.
Because the Europeans went to "renewables" and deprived themselves from a reliable source of energy before having an actual alternative, they'll have to empoverish themselves and see the euro collapse, as well as all their industry, they'll see rising unemployment and splitting of EU (especially EC). BASF went to China, others are moving to US, most of them just go to... bankrupcy: no-one can afford aluminium or glass at that price, electricity has jumped tenfold already. Only tenfold so far.
That's what Tolstoi is after: for him, the conflict in Ukraine is nearly won on the military side (Putin said it was won on the 24th of February), but Russia is not going for the Banderists any longer, Russia's going for their backers. Especially when the Yankees make sure to help the situation get worse by bleeding Europe from its industry with their IRA. When those two say the same thing ("Delenda est Europa"), it's likely it will happen... whoever said it first.
It might be surprising but I feel optimistic. First, all the storage in Germany is full. Second, there are many shipping tankers holding gas. Third, industry is working hard to shift the reliance to alternatives. Fourth, industry and public started to behave more prudently. Its going to hurt us for awhile but then we'll be independent with more options.

The sale and purchase agreement was concluded between PJSC Gazprom and the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR). The reasons and goals of the contract remain unknown, but the volume of deliveries has been disclosed, which will be about 1 billion cubic meters. Deliveries are expected to be completed by March 2023.
It is noteworthy that Azerbaijan not only fully provides itself with blue fuel, but also successfully exports it to foreign markets. Turkey is the largest importer of Azerbaijani gas, which then goes from there to European countries.

Energy is about bussiness competitiveness in so many aspects among the countries.
Gas price 2x and factorie I work in a 4x gigantic gas heaters sit silent as diesel heater sits and pufs smoke. That is the power of the free market. If not diesel there will be coal, not coal peat, not peat warmer clothing. Solutions will come much faster than you can imagine.
The solution is known since decades: Nuclear power and heat pumps. Biomass/Biogas where you need higher temperatures. You just need political will to implement that.

I am totally in favor of global warming. I hate the long, cold winters in Colorado where I live. So a year ago I began focusing on raising my carbon footprint. So far I have been able to raise the average daily temperature in Colorado by 4 degrees. I will continue until I can grow palm trees in my yard. Freedom.

There needs to be a targeted focus on energy efficiency, even if it means some societal adjustment - it's far more sustainable, both fiscally and environmentally, than simply handing money out.

If only there wasn't a nation who left the EU. The UK market combined with the rest of Europe would of buffered out and helped everyone. Instead we chose the selfish route. Still, the euroskeptics needed to see their solutions were folly, at least to the majority of the country.
