    Solid editing!
Louis's technical stuff near the end of the solo and his work from 5:55-6:10 was awesome!
Nate's feel with the ride bell and his mastery of using silence as sound give him the nod from me.

  • @paulmayerpiano
    @paulmayerpiano 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Tough to compare when sound quality is SO different between these gigs: one is a professional mix coming off the board (Nate), the other is someone standing in the crowd with a phone (Louis). So, you know how if someone asks you to listen to the same audio through two sets of identical speakers and there's a difference in volume, people almost always say the louder one sounds better - well, this is kinda like that. As far as style goes, Nate is way more of a trad RnB/jazz dude, and probably a more likely fit for Vulf. Louis is wacky and weird, super "grid", and plays drums in a style that is basically meant for the music he writes, not necessarily to try and fit someone else's tunes the way a session guy would. It's apples and oranges.

two awesome drummers with different styles. I liked both of them for what each brought to the table. It also says something that they both can make the band get energized by their playing. Not sure but I think Nate is older and it sounds like he has a bit more experience with that being said Cole is a beast and I love his work and this audio didn't do him justice. I'm not faulting the maker of the vid because this was a great chance to see a band perform with two different drummers and still rock the house. Awesome and thanks!

The beautiful thing about art is that they both have unique styles that add something different to the music. Undoubtedly Nate is the king, if anyone has pocket and skill it's him. But Louis has such a unique style that really takes drumming in its own direction and it's done with incredible technique. Both have been fantastic for this current generation of music and I am happy that they are both in the Vulf family :)

As musicians, we get all kinds of recording: some high quality, some low quality, tascam cassette tape, CD's, AIFF, WAV, MP3 etc... You can hear what is being played, and that's what we're comparing. Very different Drummers - one is groovy backbeat (fits the song), the other is doin' his kool thing (makes it fit the song). These kind comparisons are for fans of the performer.
If you were in the audience, and were dancing you'd likely find all of the syncopation and groove of Nate to make you make faces and dance, over Louis. That said, if like another commenter said, you wanted Louis' kool ideas in his solo, then that would be for you!
In the end, this is what's been going on for literally decades in jazz and funk - bands play songs from the repertoire; bands members can be different and therefore different energy. That's it.
Heck, why are there so many different orchestras who are recorded playing works from the 'Common Practice Period' and beyond - orchestras play songs from the repertoire; orchestras have different members and therefore different energy/interpretations.
Nate fans; Louis fans, it's all good. Great players with voices whom brought good energy to the ensembles each night!

Are ya'll kidding me?! Louis Cole blew the fucking top off those bars. I was literally slack-jawed through Louis Cole's solo. If he was mic'd as crisply as Nate Smith's version you guys would probably be losing your shit over it. Too bad it was recorded on a fucking potato.
I will agree that Nate's is more... "stream" I guess? Starts with a solid backbeat-style groove, comes down solid on the one.... and does it again with some variation... and again with a little bit more variation and that's it (not to say just "that's it" or put down Nate Smith - that shit is FIRE). Nate is playing to the song, and that's great. On the other hand, Louis Cole is playing a fucking multi-part solo that's insanely creative, out of this world, and STILL manages to groove so hard.

I would say Louis Cole stood out the most as a performer in his performance with the Vulf, but the overall performance with Nate Smith was the better of the two. The band is so cohesive and his drum solo is tight and exact and the perfect length, with 1st Baseman Joe Dart easing him back in with FLAWLESSNESS.
But listen, Louis Cole tho. He is a musician in his own class as far as I’ve seen.
I love them both, I liked Cole’s drumming more, but Madison Square Garden can’t be topped as far as tightness ✌🏼

As a massive fan of Louis Cole . . . gotta give it to Nate Smith.
This may sound weird, but imo Louis Cole's style only "works" on Louis Cole's oddly-specific drum setup (with the specifically-detuned bass drum, zil-bel on the snare, etc . . .). All of his crazy dynamics are lost on a "regular" kit.
Also, what was with the bizarre crabcore dueling guitarists on the Nate Smith take, lol? I was 100% not expecting crabfunkcore.

Taking aside we're comparing apples to oranges and both in stellar league, I think - in contrary to most commenters - that while Nate Smith better understands what to play with VP or the FF, there isn't all that much he's bringing to the table, as Louis Cole could. Bear with me!
In his own music, Nate is known mostly for performing as the forefront instrument with others providing background. And also for the broken rhythms.
After finding a common denominator with VP funky material, there is of course great pocket but his playing doesn't get much in the way. That might be great for stellar performance of Vulf's existing compositions.
There had been however a whole alley to be explored with Louis and sadly isn't looking to be possible as all the members now drifted apart.
You see, LC's playing isn't all about 'smashing that kick', using splashes for techno sounds, speed and 'being all weird'.
He has that uncomparable finesse of using groupings and phrasing while still holding the groove and doing so hard. You could listen to the solo alone and guess the song by how lyrical his articulation is. And still dance to it.
Now, this has it's own implications. This tends to drive the whole band, posing a challenge for other musicians to stay on top of the drums rather than just fill in. It could have lead to some very interesting compositions written around this concept. Completely different. Especially knowing Jack Stratton's tendency to weave miniature elements to just smash a massive horn or synth on top of it, or let clav or bass dominate the song.
In his time with Vulfpeck, Nate provided us with great music and some memorable lines. Don't think LC will get the same opportunity, but still. Hope such album does come out!

Louis Cole is a genius, he is smart, funny, unexpected, versatile, and he is really a great drummer.
But from a drummer's perspective, Nate Smith has a MUCH higher level than Louis Cole at drums.
Both of them know that... it is pretty obvious.
Louis Cole couldn't play in Dave Holland's quintet/big band... not because he wouldn't or couldn't technically, more because Dave Holland probably wouldn't choose to hire him.
Now to play some funky Vulfpeck, both have a level at drums and a musicality that is much higher than what is needed. So I would say... "they are both interesting in their own right".
Just Nate Smith has much more technique, available musical language, and years of playing...

Not fair to compare one high quality audio with a cell phone recording.. You can hear Nate's accents and ghost notes and with Louis, you cannot because of the recording differences. I think Nate sounds funkier here, but it's not a fair comparison because of the difference in sound qualities.

    • @DoctorWho8

As much as I love Louis Coles drumming, Nates techniqe matches the song far better. I would be interested in a synth bass solo from LC for the song however.

I think the quality of recording had a lot to do with it. Nates kit sounds very punchy whereas Louis was obviously recorded on a potato.. Both are amazing though :)

The idea was comparing the different drumming styles, not about sound quality. If sound quality is an issue for you, look up my rematch video with Louis from Red Rocks 2018 and Nate from the official MSG film.

Nate Smith isn’t writing and releasing superbadassfunkycool synth songs and Louis Cole isn’t ever going to beat Nate Smith in any sort of drum battle.
