My favorite band of all time
One of the biggest bands in the world. Been going since the late 70s. And can fill mostly any stadium in the world. Was brought up with these lads and the music. England, Essex
The video is about the man who had everything but doesn't feel anything and the song is about a relationship were feelings must be more important then words

in my youth i only listened to heavy metal and by chance i stumbled into a tent on a festival in stockholm sometime in the mid 90's where Chemical Brothes were playing, from that day i never stuck with 1 genre
Music is about the way you feel, stop listening & start feeling & you will enjoy all types of music more (bar bloody pop). I can listen to classical all the way to the heaviest of punk, at the right time in the right moment. I always some end up back with Depeche Mode though 😄 luv chemical brothers, go back before them & check out Nitzer Ebb 👍🏼 🤞🏼you’ll like it, depending on your mood at the time obviously

I was 12 years old when this was released, the chorus sends shivers down my spine still to this day, we are surrounded by noise constantly but our need for silence to calm the mind is vital for healing. Learn to enjoy the silence. We have everything we need in pur arms the rest of the stuff is just material gain that cannot fill the void.
Keep in mind most bands don't direct their own music videos, you need to separate the song from the video. The man behind the video concept is famed director Anton Corbijn.
Corbijn's idea was the idea of someone who has everything (king) just looking for some peace, the kind of thing that anyone else can find easily - a quiet place to sit.
😂 I also have memories of this song from my childhood but for a very different reason. This was the very first music video I ever remember seeing, as a little kid. It came on at the end of some entertainment news show. It was the first time I recall hearing something other than churxh music (I lived a very sheltered life, lol)
The song opened my ears to other music and has stuck with me ever since. 🙂
It was my first music video as well! I became obsessed with this song after that. DM is my favorite band, it is the sound of my childhood, my middle school, my high school. Hearing any of their songs feels me with so much nostalgia. Love their new stuff too.

Born in the 70s I found hip hop in the 80s it just grabbed me. Nothing hit me like hip hop did. 10th or 11th grade. I was giving other groups a shot. I found alt rock around that time. It's my daily driver now. I'll always have that special place for hip hop.

This song still gives me chills, this is probably my favorite song by Depeche Mode. What a talented group from England. This song was certified gold in the United States and Germany and released in 1990. Policy of Truth is also worth listening to. Glad you found this talented band.

Great reaction. Gore, the songwriter, typically writes lyrics in a very ambiguous way so always open to interpretation but I think he was referencing a relationship and how words can just get in the way or ruin it. Some people prefer to interpret his songs as drug anthems.

Speaking of 80's - 90's radio pop bands as I said on the Imagine Dragons video lol. This was one of the bands that was also considered "alternative" music. I got this album on cassette as a graduation present 🤣😂🤣. Definitely one of the more heavily played on the radio, I like it but not a fave.

Depeche Mode videos have nothing to do with the music, they are simply abstract visual art. You cannot try to gain any understanding of the music by studying the videos. In this case, ignore the king and isolation as having any contribution to the lyrics. My interpretation: The lyrics are about a relationship between two people. Period. It is about how what we really want is a feeling of love, acceptance, and connection with another person, and that for moments, we often achieve a state of bliss in that connection. Also, part of the connection is obtained through sexual satisfaction, which outside of marriage for many leads to guilt, "pleasures remain, so does the pain." History has shown that our promises of devotion and fidelity to another are often dashed to pieces, thus "vows are spoken, to be broken." The chorus is saying that for NOW in this moment of desire and bliss and while I am holding my partner, the feelings inside seem to be all that matters and that words won't improve upon the moment, so why spoil it. Enjoy the moment of silence and bliss we are enjoying together. It is not about holding a daughter.
LOL... I recommended Depeche Mode but not this song... Actually, this is not my favourite song of theirs. However, bands you can listen to is Audioslave, Guns & Roses, Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, Matallica... hmmm... I'll let you know when I remember more.

When you have get it at the start that is is all about relationship - not daughter - it would have had much more impact of the understanding of the song.

Ah...the cheesy synth-pop of the 80's...I remember it so well!!! It was all so cutting edge at the time. Now I can barely listen to most of is because it sounds so dated. I"m with Frank on this one - Personal Jesus is THE song for Depeche Mode.
