    Film scan looks wayyyyyyyyyyy better. Sharper, less apparent grain. So cool.

      It's better in every possible way. I was surprised to see the negative, to be honest. It was an educated guess but still a guess, light changed a lot during that hour so it was hard for me to come up with the settings. I got lucky and it was perfectly exposed. And HP5 at box speed looks very smooth with almost no grain.

      @@aowsif you use digital you should do a black and white photos then with red, blue, and green filter and blend them together idk how to explain this very well. But i should work better

    The film looks so much better than the digital. Good job

      it totally does. Much better than digital for long exposures. Thanks!

    Adrian, cool images. For the digital you could also have taken a series of single exposures and stacked them. This would reduce drain on battery power plus there would be no need for long exposure noise reduction since the individual exposures would be shorter and at lower ISO.

    • @aows
      @aows  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup! I did that with some long exposures I took last year and the results were definitely better. But they were shorter exposures, around half an hour. I took a bunch of 30-second exposures so the camera did it by itself. Beyond 30 seconds you have to do it manually (at least on my camera, it only goes up to 30 seconds before bulb), which is not a huge deal but a little bit of a pain :)
      In this case it was a 52 minute exposure so I'd end up with 104 exposures. I don't know how many my computer would be able to handle :D
      I used ISO 400 for this shot, and even thought the camera was processing the image for almost an hour, there was still a lot of noise. It's probably not the best camera / sensor for this, either.
      I'm not giving up on digital for long exposures, but I find film to be way better in so many ways.
      Thanks for sharing that tip!

    The film urinates all over the digital here.

    • @aows
      @aows  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It totally does haha. Digital is not good for these "extreme" long exposures.

      Yep! It does. Film and digital definitely have different advantages and looks, it's great that we can use either or both, depending on what compromises we prefer in a given situation. I shoot film 99.999% of the time purely because I find the process fun, I don't really enjoy the digital work flow, and I'm just a hobbyist, so I can 😁

    Siri cool test it's amazing how similar they look in the final image. One thing I never understood his film is a completely different technology than digital so I've always wondered why I did little sensor behaves exactly like film and that it needs an hour to build up an image. Thanks for making this tutorial you're giving me some ideas.

    • @aows
      @aows  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you liked it! Yeah, it's chemicals vs sensors, they behave very similar in regular conditions but vary a lot when you push them to the extreme.

      aows I will be sure to send you some results! I’m wondering if I should switch to a spot meter and use the zone system. I find that the reflective meter can be a little bit misleading sometimes. What do you use?

    • @aows
      @aows  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aarons6532 I use my digital camera to meter. I always have it with me, either to record these videos or to take images. I used a standalone meter in the past but it was just too many things to bring with me :)
