Probably the greatest live performance in rock history. The crazy thing is that they played like this for three hours almost ever night. Great reaction Gals!!
They Sold Out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles ! Check out their performances from that concert here on TH-cam Heartbreaker I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home
Grand Funk Railroad is a great American rock band who achieved their peak in popularity during the 1970's. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is one of my favorites. But they had a lot of great hits such as "We're An American Band", "The Loco-Motion", "Walk Like A Man", "Shinin' On", "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "Bad Time" etc.
Lucky and Old enough for GFR to be My Very First Live Concert to attend. Ended up seeing them 3 times through the early and mid 70's. They were the epitome of Live Bands.
I'm in grandma's generation. I love GFR. Remember, this is a 3 piece band. No studio effects. No tricks. Just funky, soulful rock and roll. The bass player is killing it. He's driving thus song. Great reaction! Thanks!
Saw them in concert in Seattle in 1971, absolutely fantastic entertainers, and so much sound from just 3 people, this song was one of those played in that concert
Rock from this era has unreal gems like this in spades, Grand Funk being A great example of making compelling music that stands the test of time. Modern viewers confirm just what we knew right away as all this was happening, we were witnessing forever music that appeals to almost any generation, race or ethnic group, does not matter, this music conquers all. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎶
Thank you all...I was lucky to see these these guys and so many other icons in the 60's and 70's, it makes me smile to see two more generations enjoy them as well. The most memorable time I saw them (Three Dog Night is a refernce to how many dogs it takes to stay warm on a winters night) was during a blizzard in Springfield, Ma., (1972 or 3) the concert cancelled but about 100 or so of us made it and were seated so...the guys came out said nobody's going anywhere tonight, so c'mon down front...we're gonna jam. From Janis to Skynard, Outlaws (name it)...the night was epic.words fail even today. Keep looking to the live sessions, that's the standard...not the studio
Love the excitement of several generations of listeners enjoying legendary rock and roll from my high school years. Grand Funk represents what we called the quintessential Power Trio of that era. Especially enjoyed the look on the face of the youngest of your family. My generation and I had that same look on our faces at her age back in 1969. Enjoy and rock on.
These guys were 18 (Mel on bass), 19 (Don on drums) and 21 (Mark on lead guitar) when this video was made. Maybe the best live performance ever recorded on You Tube.
😂 I grew up in Detroit. This was my band. I met Don (the drummer) at the 1969 Pop Music Festival, at Olympia Stadium. I saw that Death Star Afro walking towards me and ran over to saw hello. I was 12 years old! 😂
Their early stuff is their best. Their Caught In The Act album has all good songs. T. N. U. C., Black Licorice, Footstomping Music, I’m Your Captain/Closer To Home, etc are great to listen to.
Grand Funk RR takes their name from an actual Railroad that ran through Michigan and Ohio (they are from Flint, Michigan) the Grand Trunk Western RR.. my older brother took me to see them in concert at Cobo Arena in Detroit just before I left for Vietnam in April 1971.. great concert and performers..
I saw them as a junior in High School, that was the day I grew my hair out! 🤷🏻♂️ now I am 71, and bald! Great American Band...Iconic! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
GFR originated in my hometown of Flint, Michigan. Their name is a take on the name of the rail system that runs through the area, Grand Trunk. There is a rail bridge that to this day, within days, gets the name changed on it whenever it is repainted from Grand Trunk Railroad to Grand Funk Railroad.
I saw them live in 1971 and they killed it. They put so much energy on the stage it was amazing. They are probably best know for the songs "I'm an American Band ", and "I'm Your Captain".
Love watching 3 generations of women learn/review the 60's through 80's. I saw nearly every band multiple times. Love the joy evident in Mom & daughter. Not sure exactly how LuLu takes it, but love to hear her takes.
Love your reaction to Grand Funk Railroad, they are one of my favorite bands of all time. They were huge in the late 60s to the mid 70s. Mark Farner, the lead singer and lead guitar player, is my favorite front man. He could do it all. I recommend Heartbreaker live 1974 by them next.
This performance was recorded in Hershey, PA at the Hershey Community Center by WITF-TV channel 33 (PBS station) in 1969 for their show titled "The Show". There were only a few handfuls of people watching it live.
Yaaaaay!! One of my all-time fave groups❤ Saw them in concert back in the early 70s😊 'locomotion' is a good song choice. And, my arms would be DEAD from drumming 😮
Glad to see your appreciation for this!! I was fortunate to see them live in 1972 and 1974, and again on their reunion tour in the 90s. I worked in the concert business for 23 years, and definitely have to say that they were amazing live!! You should definitely check out their song "We're An American Band"!!!
You mentioned their name. They actually came up with their name from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad that went through their hometown of Flint, Michigan. They came up “Grand Funk Railroad. Here’s the kicker! The genre of “Funk” music didn’t even exist yet.
Notice Mark Farner's guitar which was a Musicraft Messenger guitar which was ahead of it's time with an aluminum neck, stereo outputs and a special fuzz circuit that gave it a special sound. It was a hollow body electric guitar which Mark stuffed with foam rubber and taped over the front openings with masking tape to reduce feedback since he played so loud. In the viedeo you can clearly see the masking tape on the front.
I grew up an hour and a half from Detroit, in Canada, during these days! I’m close to 70 now, but I saw Grand Funk Railroad 4 times! The MC5, Bob Seger and many of the 60’s/70’s Mowtown acts! I’m grateful I grew up in such a crazy time for music! Looong before social media. When what “people liked” was organic. Peace
This was a cover tune, that a few years before a British band called The Animals had recorded! The music critics hated these guys, but THE PEOPLE loved them! I saw them in 1971 with another band i really LIKED, called BLOODROCK!! Bloodrock was a new band, and touring with GFR. A really good concert!!
Hello Trio, I'm glad that you found Grand Funk. This music is from their " Red Album ". I tell you if memory serves this sounds like the album and they lifted it from this performance onto their studio album. Grand Funk Railroad knew how to " whip it out - ( Frank Zappa) " and play their music in a live setting. " Hey! " - Kyoto Tachibana Senior High School Brass Band Club
Loved your reaction to Grand Funk. You guys are great. They came out of nowhere in late 68 to early 69 and just blew up, and started selling out all over the world. Everybody wanted to see them. Their trademark was they played so loud and heavy. They constantly upstaged other bands, including Led Zeppelin. They were the it band for many years. You got to check out they're legendary 1971 Shea stadium concerts. It's incredible. Try :"I'm your captain" &"Paranoid" Love your show girls!! 🔥🔥🔥
First time watching you all. I'm with the lady on the right, I had heard of GFR but didn't know any of their songs, or thought I didn't but I'd heard American Band before. I'm 63 and this is the best live performance I've ever seen. Love it. Love your alls reaction....very well done.
These guys were huge in the early 70s. In fact, they matched The Beatles in performing before a sell-out crowd at Shea Stadium. Except that it took The Beatles three weeks to sell out. Grand Funk did it in three hours!
The Beatles took 5 weeks to sell-out Shea stadium , and Grand Funk sold it out in 3 days. Grand Funk sold-out MSG in less than 2 hours. They added a second show and it sold-out in 4 hrs. GFR sold-out MSG TWICE in less than 6 hrs. Without calling to put on your Credit card or stopping at Strawberry's.
I lived about 60 miles from where these dudes were from. The railroad cars belonged to a company named Grand Trunk. I saw it on the rail cars every day.
it was great watching you ladies listen to GFR for the first time. my wife (81 years young) also watched this with me. she hadn't heard of them either. i am 73 and they were one of my favorites. you must listen to more GFR.
The Drummer sings lead vocals in We're An American Band, which is one of their most popular songs. GFR killed it in this performance. The Bass player was 18 or 19, and the other two were 20 or 21 years old here.
The first rovk band ln the world fromUSA..even the beetles n led zeppelin gets boooo from the fans after this bang started the concert..so give this play in the last concert ..because too powerfulllll..❤❤❤
One of my favorites from the 60s, Yes, do I'm your captain/ studio version

Another great live performance from Grand funk railroad is their 1972 performance of heartbreaker. It's one of my favorite songs from them. I think you might like it too.
I saw GFR in concert back in the early 70's. I couldn't believe there were only 3 band members producing all that sound. You should review "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home". It's a completely different style of song which demonstrates the versatility of this band.
Keep in mind that at the time of this recording the oldest guy on stage was either 21 or 22 years old. They sold out Shea stadium faster than the Beatles. 😮
It's a bold move to select "Inside Looking Out" live as one's first exposure to GFR, well done. PS: Do you think the girls even know what a "nickel bag" is? LOL
Recorder at a PBS station in Harrisburg Pennsylvania in 1969. I saw them 2 times at the Harrisburg Pennsylvania farm show arena, they were fantastic! Review Chicago 25 or 6 to 4. I've been to at least 15 Chicago concerts, the late Terry Kath was an incredible lead guitarist, trust me you'll like it.
I have experienced this music since 1960. Mark Farner - such a badass performer !!! Underrated for sure !!!

From An American Band on the went downhill, imho.
I don't care who you are, when it gets to the first part where Mark and Don are trading vocal parts, you start smiling...Super infectious groove...
That is known as "call and response."

Still does. I'm only a few feet from the tracks.
I bought my first album by them in 1969. Also saw them in concert at the The Forum in LA. You might also like FootStompin Music.

Flint, Mich.'s favorite sons. Big fans of theirs back in the day. Early albums were great and full of energy.

I played Grand Funk in a rock band in 1969 -
i was in high school that year.
You mentioned their name. They actually came up with their name from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad that went through their hometown of Flint, Michigan. They came up “Grand Funk Railroad. Here’s the kicker! The genre of “Funk” music didn’t even exist yet.
Wow
The lead singer, mark farner became a Christian in the 80s. They had a big hit called locomotion. Also American band.
They were 18, 20, and 21 here. Let that sink in for a minute. Saw them in '71 - ears rang for 2 1/2 days. Great concert.
Notice Mark Farner's guitar which was a Musicraft Messenger guitar which was ahead of it's time with an aluminum neck, stereo outputs and a special fuzz circuit that gave it a special sound. To watch a reaction by three generations was so great. This was such a good song and video. Thank you.
First concert i ever saw was GFR & DOA. 1969 Salt Lake City, Utah. The place was packed from the floor to the rafters. $10.00 for a ticket.
I lived about 60 miles from where these dudes were from. The railroad cars belonged to a company named Grand Trunk. I saw it on the rail cars every day.
The production is crazy. I watch videos of 80's bands that look like were made in the 20's. I don't know who filmed this but great job!!
We're an American Band is an awesome song by them!
it was great watching you ladies listen to GFR for the first time. my wife (81 years young) also watched this with me. she hadn't heard of them either. i am 73 and they were one of my favorites. you must listen to more GFR.

Another great live performance from Grand funk railroad is their 1972 performance of heartbreaker. It's one of my favorite songs from them. I think you might like it too.
Just noticed the lead singer/guitarist Mark Farner has a hair style similar to you three ladies. Good review!
How they are not in the rock and roll hall of fame is a complete joke. This band was awesome back in the day
Because the RRHoF is a joke.
I saw GFR in concert back in the early 70's. I couldn't believe there were only 3 band members producing all that sound. You should review "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home". It's a completely different style of song which demonstrates the versatility of this band.
Drummer went all Bobby Brady on those drums!
Nana Remembers, she just doesn't want to cop to it!
I grew up with this music. It was a beautiful time.
Grand Funk was huge back in the day...awesome band...yea...the drummer's hair had it's own zip code.
I saw them do this song in 1970...my first concert.
Awesome first concert.
one of the best all-time bands !! Saw them twice in '71... Always closed the show with this song. K-I-L-L-E-D !! Shame on you, R&R HOF !!
One of my all time favorite bands!
Keep in mind that at the time of this recording the oldest guy on stage was either 21 or 22 years old. They sold out Shea stadium faster than the Beatles. 😮
It's a bold move to select "Inside Looking Out" live as one's first exposure to GFR, well done.

Yet to see a better performance ,,,thanks for the memories!
That's a lot of music for three guys
Bass is killing it!
Recorder at a PBS station in Harrisburg Pennsylvania in 1969. I saw them 2 times at the Harrisburg Pennsylvania farm show arena, they were fantastic!

I've been to at least 15 Chicago concerts, the late Terry Kath was an incredible lead guitarist, trust me you'll like it.
Mark Farner was in his prime 1969
The guitarist/singer is very religious now and was coming to bible study at my friend`s house in Texas in the 90s.
I’m 72 and saw them in concert in New Orleans the very early 70’s. I believe it was 71 or 72. The music was cranked.
Saw them 1981 i think that was the year. In my home town Wichita falls. Tx.
The boys from Flint, MI. Mark, Don, and Mel. Grand Funk Railroad...
A truly great band!
Grandma was really into this! Woo hoo!
...and yes 'Bed Time to be in love' reaction would be great.
Great reaction video! Y'all cool.

I love - Foot stomping music is good to get you going
Mark Farner Mel Shaser Don Brewer ❤❤❤❤ Grand Funk Railroad 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Nana knows a nickle bag is.
What gets me the most is the Rock & Roll Hall of "SHAME" doesn't see them good enough to let them in !
Work all day, making up nickel bags...A little freak culture shout out for the kids...Heh...
That's funky!! Lol Great reaction! 🔥❤🔥
Thank you!! 😊
We're an American Band is a song that got them continuous airplay.
I saw them live in Virginia Beach in '69.
Drummers hair 👍
Hey Gals, I was 18. This is what I was hearing all the Time. I had a great Stereo to listen to this, Does Lulu know what an L.P. record IS? Great as always, Old FC-2.
These guys were KIDS for this performance! Think about the home video (style) of "We're an American Band" as your next one.
Yes, thats the riff! 👍
I'm glad Lulu is getting to see this
