Nice to see some railway carriages not covered in advertising, eg 1:55. UK trains cost about £10 billion to operate every year and supposedly spend about £200 million on advertising, so that is all adding to your ticket prices.

Great video. Always wanted to be in a cab ride along that line. Used to go to school in Hereford near the railway line and spent alot of my spare time watching the trains go by. Thanks for sharing.

No mountains and fairly straight, but super-pleasant scenery. The wordage is appreciated. I even like that your camera's auto-exposure is in love with the cloudy sky. Thank you!

Reference: Edgar Street Sidings. I've been doing some research and discovered that the old lines which ran on what is now Great Western Way had some sidings around Canonmoor Street. Graham Roberts, in his book 'The Shaping of Modern Hereford' refers to these sidings as 'Worcester Sidings'. However, they were later extended across Edgar Street and through the cattle market to fuel the old Electricity Generating Station. I believe it's, thus, reasonable to think these were the actual 'Edgar Street Sidings'. These lines and sidings can be seen on mid-20th Century OS maps (search: 'Hereford OS 1:25,000, 1945-1969') and old aerial images of the city (search: Hereford' History Aerial views of Hereford'). The sidings referred to as Edgar Street Sidings in the video were generally known as 'Aylestone Hill Sidings', 'Corporation Sidings', or just 'The Diesel Depot' or 'The Depot'.

I obtained the reference to Edgar Street sidings from the Track Maps (quail) book. The Wales and Western Sectional Appendix refers to it as the Diesel depot sidings. So the reference to Edgar street sidings in said publication is most probably erroneous. Not my part of the world I am afraid when it comes to intimate knowledge.

@@RailMart I wouldn't say I have intimate knowledge, but when presented, I do relish the opportunity to dig through old maps and photographs.

I have lived in Hereford all my life & my father was a signalman at Hereford but I have never heard of the sidings south of the station referred to as "Edgar St sidings". The actual Edgar Street is on the other side of the city probably a mile away from the station so cant understand why you have called these sidings thus. In local railway parlance they are usually referred to as "the depot" or "the fuelling point".

Great video, thanks a lot. The immense amount of trackside foliage is a concern, it needs a lot of cutting back to aid sighting, and reduce rail head issues. Basic maintenance would save am awful lot of service problems. Might even give passengers something of a view, but that's not what they're travelling for is it?!

Great video and loco choice ! Is there any chance of an mic 🎤 pointing out the window toward the engine to capture a classic Sulzer brush class 47 thrash wired for sound per the old locomaster profiles dvd series classics ? Or maybe a lower field of view showing some cab controls or dials for the ultimate driving experience ?

The sidings on the right just after Aylestone Hill bridge at Hereford - Edgar Street sidings ? That's a very long way from Edgar Street. Sorry to be pedantic.

Anyone know why the sidings at Hereford are named after Edgar Street - which is actually half a mile away, on the north side of the station?

Another great video, with bags of semaphore signalling, as in the others. Does highlight one of the disadvantages of digital movie cams though. When passing close lineside objects at speed, such as the multitude of trees and bushes, the pixelation can't keep up and the picture becomes blurred. Nitpicking, I know, and doesn't spoil the overall enjoyment, but digital is not perfect. However, looking forward to future videos.

That's actually caused by youtube's compression, not the digital camera

    • @jkd2377

If you choose a higher quality of transmission (I use 1080p), and if your internet connection can sustain it, the pixelation goes away (for me). Left-click the little gear ("Settings") on the bottom right of the toolbar.

    Lovely video!
What was the class 47 pulling and what was its line speed?
The journey time is just slightly more than a scheduled passenger service, and the train seems to be moving along quickly, so I guess it's doing at least 75mph ?
