  • The Labour Department is reviewing working hours for employees. According to research by Our World in Data workers in South Africa have been working longer hours than they should. Currently most workers are on a 5-day work shift of about 9 hours a day. This amounts to about 45 hours a week. Chief director:Labour Relations at the Department of Labour Thembinkosi Mkalipi explains.

    Oh my gosh yes it's absolutely true that in careers where there are no trade unions, employees work longer hours.

    Are teachers paid for preparing for the next day at home? Marking at home.11 to 15 classes to mark and 50-60 scripts per class? Workshops in holidays. No annual leave? No overtime for teaching after hours and weekends.

      No, we don't and what idiots don't get through their thick skulls is that we don't get lunch breaks, we have to set papers, manage unruly kids and basically work our backsides off. We contract comorbidities caused by our stress levels. We are in the crucible from start to end. Parent evenings where you have to sit at school after school just to get home after a 14 hour shift

      @@professorboat4133 actually we don't get it 4 times. It's March holidays. I have been at school this entire holiday season. June, it winter school. September is marking, December we get the same as everyone else festive season holiday from 15 December. Please do more research. I am a teacher for 13 years. Don't assume what you don't know. We deal with kids that parents can't handle and expect us to handle them. We deal with so many issues. That is why 5 000 teachers leave this country for better work and pay every year. I am one of them who will be leaving soon. Can't handle the fact that we work everyday 24/7, parent calling in the middle of the night that their child is not home or ran away from home.

    The problem with 45 hrs is that prior to 45hrs people were employed for 40hrs so when u apply for a diff position your hours is now increased but the grade is the same then the company don't pay you for that 5hrs and call it lateral moves. The 5hr remuneration was taken to CCMA and judgement was that the company was in its rights not to remunerate the employee as the contract was signed.

    I work 9 hours a day, 5 hours a week. I work for a massive org in South Africa and we all work these hours. I have friends who work the same hours and also work Saturday.
    In other-words, this so called "expert" has no idea what he is talking about... Seems to be a common trend now days to bring on idiots to talk about serious matters.

      You actually working 8 hours a day with 1 hour for lunch break making it 9 hours per day but lunch hour is not considered a working hour as you taking a break and that's why lunch hour is not a paid hour.

    Most companies reflect 45 working hours on the payslips but we work weekends as well and we dont get paid for it.we also dont get yearly increases in the motortrade. It must be investigared especially in the motorparts companies.

    Guys how are the hours calculated? Do they exclude lunch hour?

    • @sahhananaiker9237
      @sahhananaiker9237 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, lunch is not a paid hour. The reason is that you not physically working but having a break. Working hours means doing your job. If you are not taking a lunch break which by law is illegal then you must get paid for it.
