The famous song "Chura Liya Hai Tumne jo dilko" is also composed by RD. So there is no comparison between two legends. They are the legends in their own time and style.
Rafi Sab was an institution by himself, no single music director could break him or his career. In fact music directors came into limelight because of him. I don't know where or who started this rumour that R. D. Barman ji was against him. An emotional song sung by Rafi Sab for Mehmood apart from other songs of Chote Nawab brought Barman Ji into the fold of wanted music directors. Music has no communal bonds or boundaries. Alas for the songs of the golden era, such will never return.
Ofcourse it was Mohammed Rafi whose voice enabled music directors to get recognition in the field of music.

I am from Tamil Nadu coimbatore here predominantly we can only listen to Tamil songs of p susheela VANI JAIRAM and SPB TM SOUNDARAJAN hindi film songs being universally recognized we have MOHAMAD RAFI being wriggling in our ears because of his soft smooth voice and hindi accent ofcourse kishore Kumar is not the least but still there is APPLE like feeling in Mohamad rafi

70s were the years of Kishore da. Producers only used to ask the music directors to have Kishore da to sing for their movies. It was not at all Pancham da’s decision always. Still he used Rafi Saab’s voice whenever it looked appropriate.
In fact many of Rajesh Khanna hit songs are in the voice of Rafi Saab. For example…

One of industry's best gift is a bhajan "Man tadpat Hari Darshan Ko aaj". This bhajan was written by a Muslim (Shakeel), composed by a Muslim (Naushad) and sang by a Muslim (Rafi). There are many such examples. Kishore singing Kawwali, sufi song.
You must mention the song Chura liya hai..." From Yadon ki Baarat where he made Rafi song with Asha. RdB was an innocent music lover person. Petty matters like religion never mattered to him. We shouldn't forget that it was Majrooh Sultanpuri who penned countless songs for him.

A composer must use the voice that's appropriate for the song. But it's also a fact that the heroes of the 70s and 80s wanted Kishore to do playback. When Mithun Chakraborty married KIshore' s ex wife Yogita, Kishore refused to sing for Mithun. Mithun was upset because the top heroes used KIshore' s voice only and he didn't want some second level singer 😀

There was another beautiful song from movie”Mukti” sung by Ravi and composed by RD Burman: “Pyar hai ek Nissan kadmo ka”. That song whenever I hear, it makes me emotional and bring tears into my eyes.
Rahul gave some 400 songs to Kishore but only some 100 songs to Rafi. Film teesri manjil had shammi kapoor, so Rafi was a must. Last and not least, no music director could ever made or break Rafi sahab's career. Rafi sahab was such a gem. And Rafi sahab sang some 11 songs for actor Kishore. I salute the legend for lip syncing in these 11 songs sung by our Rafi saab.

Composers has their own choice. Rafi was choice for laxmikant pyarelal and remained on top with super hit numbers for LP. Films like sargam, karz, naseeb, dostana, Ram balram was in every one's lip with LP super composition at the time of his death. No difference whether RD

Rather RD started declining from that time. It was LP and rafi combo.
I agree that R D Burman did not sabotage Rafijis career, however after the release of ARADHANA he had to flow with the public taste and hence Kishore ji had a major share in his compositions.

Great analysis. Rafi sahab and Kishore da were very close friends. However, time and luck are factors which no one can control. It is a fact that Kishore da suited better to Rajesh khanna. I would like to say that Your this video is an eye opener to everybody who thought / believed that R.D.Burman had a bias against Mohd.Rafi.
On the other hand I would say that both the legends were very much comfortable with each other, but as you have said that destiny plays an important role..hence the pairing of R.D.Burman & Kishore Kumar were loved by the masses.
Mohd.Rafi got a Filmfare & a National Award for his comeback song.

Burman Da....loved Rafi Saab too, unlike Naushad, who hated Kishore Da....Can these lovely people say how many songs did Naushad do with Kishore Da....the best singer of Bollywood, who won 7 Filmfare awards, in comparison with Rafi Saab's 6 Awards.....Now this isn't a race....but this is & will remain the truth forever.... @@russelindia ....Sir, kindly go through the dates from where Kishore Da started achieving his awards, Rafi Saab was definitely singing in in the 60's, 70's & early 80's too.....and see in how many years we lost Kishore Da, after Rafi Saab.....it was a combination of beautiful song's, tune, lyrics & singing which made them get so many awards, Rafi Saab in his peek time from 50's onwards was singing, when Kishore Da wasn't even there in the industry..... please comment how many awards did Rafi Saab achieve when Kishore Da hadn't entered into playback Singing..... however far we may go.....the love for both of them will never fade away for the next 1000 year's, this is the kind of work they both have done in a small life span.....God Bless their lovely souls.....

Mohammad Rafi RD Burman combination is one of the best and greatest combination.
Rahoul bhai, Panchamda was God to Indian Music in disguise. He was from a Royal Family and his parents had never taught him to be partial.
So those who make such comments and provoke gossip to flare enmity are mere rascals. Rafi saab slowly surrendered to the trend that was going during that period. What has happened to Kumar Shanu & Udit Narayan? Shanu is singing devotional song on Goddess Kali nowadays.
At the outset let me express my regret in calling the words "Mazhabi ke Andhon". I am not in position to make a video of my own. If so, I can mention lot of examples in which RDB ignored Md. Rafi. In Seetha aur Geetha and Sholay, RDB choose Mannada for Dharmendra, to whom Rafi saheb normally lending voice. The pictures which you mentioned ie., "TheTrain,Baharon ke sapne,, Teesri Manzil" no doubt all songs were hits and composed by Panchamda. But this was the peak period of Rafi and there was no other option for any music director. Regarding the National award and Filmfare award winning song "Kya human Tera wada", the situation demands the voice of Rafi there. It's true that the combo of Kishoreda and Rajesh Khanna was well received by public for some period. But for the other stars also Panchamda didn't choose Rafi during the period 1972 to 1976. But it was the musical talent and courage of veteran Madan Mohanji that lift up the veteran singer with "Laila Majnu" despite opposition by Rishi Kapoor. The outstanding hit of "Laila Majnu" followed by "Sargam", "Amar Akbar Anthony by L.P made the producers to look to Rafi saheb again. In this process, Panchamda has no option and took Rafi in Shaan. This was compulsory for Pancham and not obligation.
Regarding your comment of Naushad on Kishoreda, I too dislike the nature of Naushad, as an senior artist, he has to respect the veteran Kishoreda.
It would not be out of context to mention here that though Panchamda was to some extent affectionate to Rafi, there were other music directors viz. Anil Biswas, C. Ramachandra, Hemant kumar, Salil Chowdary, Bhappi Lahiri, Kalyanji Anandji (to some extent) completely ignored during the peak period of Rafi. One of the above music directors went to the extent calling Rafi saheb as "Bhendi Bazar crow". In your terms shall I call him "Mazhbi Andha". But no. This may be due to personal grudge or jealous. Linking this to religion will be foolishness.Music has no religion. But whatever it be, Md. Rafi got his right place at his end of his period. This is because the music and voice that counts and not indidividual.

Rafi Saab & RD Burman’s other great songs were : Nagma hamara from Bundalbaaz(1977), poochho na yaar kya hua from Zamane ko Dikhana hai (1982), mujhse bhala yeh kaajal tera from the train (1970). Even his father Sd Burman had a great rapport with Mohd Rafi mostly all Dev anand films of 60’s till Gambler!!

You are absolutely right. Rafi sahab was the favourite of SD. During Kishore da's peak also Rafi sahab sang for RD. Both RD and Rafi sahab were too great for any nonsense. 👍🙂

First off -Rafi saab getting only 1 National award speaks of the bias and music impairment of the so called jury!! Such a shame to them!! Secondly--Rafi saab is such a wholesome & consummate singer--nobody has the calibre to make or break him--his voice is a gift from heavens and he himself was an angelic person--so there!!
To be honest long ago I had same discussion with my friend, he proclaimed that RB Burman was professional and there was no communal inclinations. Hence gave the songs what suited both Kishore Da and Rafi Saheb....If you remember Pyar Ka Mausam, most of the songs are sung by Rafi Saheb and one song by Kishore Da. Even today I get confused who sang the best for song "Tum bin Jaoon Kahan".... both were legends and great immortal voice.

I have never heard anyone saying that R D Burman ignored Rafi Saab.Every musician has his favourite singer.For Rd,it was obviously Kishoreda.RD said "I have lost my voice"on Kishoreda's demise.Both were great singers.Because Nasir Hussain preferred Rafi Saab,R D used Rafi Saab's voice.

I don’t care for whatever people say. But, even till today, we have singers who can mimic any of the singers, but, Muhammad Rafi is impossible to mimic. He was the best and best of all we have heard. Magical and ultimate.

Rd Burman also stated that he regretted not giving Rafi more songs.He also said that Kishore was a God gifted singer,although he didn't have classic training.

Rafi and kishore were both great singers but fact is kishore voice suited of that time many super stars more than Rafi 's voice . Personally I liked kishore voice on rajesh Khanna , Anil kapoor and amitabh coz of heavy bass.

There are two extremes to this argument. Unfortunately, you are taking the other extreme. To suggest there was not a bias is a fallacy too. RD preferred Kishore, their styles matched, and they had a common Bengali background, and I guess RD can take some credit for re-launching Kishore in a big way.
The fact that RD composed for Rafi is a moot point, there were songs that Kishore simply did not have the ability to render, The genius of Kishore had its limit for not having real classical training.
Kishore became the voice of Rajesh Khana, just as Rafi's was of Shami, and by any measure, Kishore did every bit of justice to it.
As an entertainer, Kishore was on par with Rafi, or in many cases even better. As a singer in general Rafi was much better and as a Playback singer Rafi simply has no competition.
In summary, to suggest that RD gave Rafi a fair chance on merit is a complete fallacy, and to suggest that RD went out of his way to damage Rafi is just as foolish a suggestion.

Completely agree with this comment!!! Rafisahab was the greatest rand best ever male playba ck singer all along. It is only that in 70s many heroes and especially RD preferred Kishore Kumar. Bit he did a major comeback in second half of 70s. The fact that Rafi clones took over completely in 89s seals the debate.
