What has caused the biggest change in roofing requirements?
In QLD at the back end of 2020 there was a hail storm that swept through Springfield lakes and caused $304 Million dollars of damage to homes. This along with the labor shortages during the following year has moved the appetite for builders and customers between tiled roofs to colorbond roofs.

Tiled roofs have been around for a very long time, some of the first traces of tiled roofs were in Greece at two temples Apollo and Poseidon which are believed to have been constructed in 700 and 650 BC. Generally tiled roofs were made for whatever material was readily available in the area, mostly Clay or slate.
In Australia tile production began in 1200s with terracotta tiles but over time there has been a natural evolution and now most of the tiles in our homes are made from concrete.
Let's look at the benefits of a tiled roof:

With increasing labor costs tiled roofs are now becoming more expensive to install then other options
Now let's talk about Colorbond:
Like many metal related products colorbond or corrugated iron sheeting began in the industrial era of England in 1843. In Australia corrugated iron roofing was introduced by John Lysaght and now the corrugated shed is a staple for many aussie backyards.
The second evolution of corrugated iron was colorbond which was discovered by a Chicago based company called Lithostrip Corporation who were able to bond paint to a galvanized base. This was introduced by the Lysaght’s into the australian market in the 1960’s
So lets talk benefits of having a colorbond roof:
You will notice the marketing for colorbond roof. They talk about colorbond being able to withstand the harsh Australian weather conditions. Well they are not incorrect. If you looked at the post hail storm imagery of springfield lakes in 2020 you could very easily spot the colobond roofed home vs the tiled which all were covered with tarps. The metal roof was able to withstand the large hail without letting water penetrate into the home.
A well maintained colorbond roof should last great then 30 years without a great deal of effort on the owner part.
Unlike tiles colorbond roof sheets come in long lengths, this makes the installation process less labor intensive compared to tiles
From a styling perspective there are many options both from a colours and profile perspective when it comes to metal roofing solutions.
What are the disadvantages
The main and biggest disadvantage is the lack of thermal properties of colorbond roofing however with adequate insulation you can still have a functional system. Our recommendation is anticon blankets which sit in between the roof sheets and battens, they work to reduce rain noise and improve the thermal properties of the roof
Being large sheets if there is any damage you will need to replace the full length of the sheet
When aerials or other roof mount accessories are added to the colorbond system they need to be adequately siliconed, this can become a problem down the track. With tiled roof because they overlap its easier to mount accessories on the roof.
What are the innovation in the roofing industry:
Well the biggest is solar tiled roofs, Tesla are offering this as a solution which some extremely attractive benefits. Much like solar panels themselves it will take some time for there to be adequate competition in the industry to bring the price down so it can compete with the likes of colorbond or traditional tiles. At this stage they are still quiet expensive.

Good info. Other advantage of colorbond roof is its much lighter than tile. Weight of roof needs to be considered when renovating.
