  • In this video, I compare two very good-sounding jazz guitars made by Guild. The X-150 has one pickup, the X-170 has 2 pickups. I explain all about the setups in the video. Both of them play amazingly but can you hear a difference in the sound? Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

One pickup near the fretboard is all I need. Never used a bridge pickup, it was just added useless weight for me.

To me the 150’s tone is a little harsher but it’s a more versatile guitar. I personally would never use the 2nd pickup. Both are beautiful guitars and either wouldn’t collect dust- thanks for giving us some insight into guitars Rich

I've got a single pickup 2003 Savoy X-150 in sunburst. No way does it feel like the entry model that it is. Surprisingly loud acoustically and very comfortable to play. Mine was made in Corona and is a little on the bright side but I don't mind.

I discover that in My 78 L5ces i use both pick up (with rear p u volume set to 7) when i want i lighter sound Perfect for comp or to strum in a softer way... Try it out, it Works Perfectly! 😊

I guess I'm one of the few who prefers the single pickup guitar! I do think that the single pickup could do with a slight adjustment away from the strings.

I’ve been playing an X-170 for 29 years and love it. The thinner body makes it very comfortable to play and the sound post does a great job of preventing feedback in loud playing situations. That said, I would love to have an X-150 to get closer to an ES175 configuration, but I would not expect it to be as versatile as the X-170.

My "Manhattan" X-170 is visually identical to yours, except that mine has a black pickguard and is a pre-Fender buyout model, made in '87. In my opinion, the X-170 is an unbelievable value in a great-playing and sounding jazz / blues guitar, that is perfect for playing a variety of musical styles. Its is exceptionally well-built (like Guild is known for) and simply beautiful, in both sound and looks. It's a great guitar for players who can't afford to plop down huge dollars on a vintage fat-box archtop, but that want a nice jazz sound and playability. It's great for blues and jazz - and rock as well - just an exceptionally versatile guitar that I'll never sell! Thanks for sharing!

They both sound great think pickup to high to close to strings on the one pickup one.

Ohh...the X150, warm, round, sweet tone. Of course I play mostly a nylon string these days, so maybe I'm prejudiced. And my electric is a carved top custom with a floating Johnny Smith pickup attached to the neck. I played primarily Guilds from the 60s through the 90s. They were great guitars.

id prefer the X-150 cause you can play it and hear it without plugging it into an amp, thats when archtop electrics sound the best

Hello, which tune o matic bridge do you recommend on an x170? The standard Gibson styles have the wider string spacing. I’d appreciate any help as I’m hitting dead ends online. All the best. Great videos!

Like you said those are both great jazz guitars. I like the tone of the one with the white pickguard the best because its a little brighter.

I traded in my Ibanez AF95 2-pick up arch top for an Ibanez AF71 with only a floating neck pick up since I never used the 2nd pick-up.

Enjoy your videos, interesting comparison. Any thoughts on magnetic pull on the 2pick-up? I realize it wouldn't be great, but if you're playing jazz the bridge pick-up becomes redundant, besides the extra space for the right hand is a plus. I have both 2 pickup L5's and a 1pick-up Wes. Maybe it's just psychological, but I prefer the 1 pickup for jazz. Of course these are 25.5 inch scale length and are brighter by nature than the Guilds.

I'm sure the 1st one could sound as smooth and warm as that 2nd one-pickup guitar...Just a matter of dialing- in the right settings on the amp

The X150 wins big time on the tone.

  • @koyaanisqatsi78

Does it need to be super acoustic? to get a good electric sound? no... Now if these were fully laminated I wouldn't mind it at all, but they advertise them as a solid top and make them fat, and the current A-150 hasn't anything mounted on the top so that it can vibrate freely, in that case you would hope for some nice acoustic tone but they fall pretty flat there. I do think they are lovely guitars overal.

  • @colinvh5459

I don’t see the sense of two pick ups on a jazz guitar
