Such mature, technical music created and performed by very young men. Keyboardist Keith Emerson was 26. bass/guitar/vocalist Greg Lake was 23 and drummer Carl Palmer was just 20 years old.
    PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!!

And , Greg Lake had already been in King Crimson !!!

    • @TheRKae
      @TheRKae ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@stevenmccart8502 And in Crimson Lake had only just recently learned to play the bass. In his autobiography "Lucky Man" he gives a very funny retelling of how he was asked to play the bass, figured it shouldn't be too hard, and then instantly had Michael Giles yelling at him, "What in the hell are you doing?" Apparently, Lake knew NOTHING about what he was supposed to be doing with the instrument.
Lake is one of my favorite bass players!

This is a three man band! What a sound, what complexity, how many transitions, time and theme changes. They did more in the first few minutes then most bands did in their entire careers. Amazing a unique album when release 50 years ago! ELP were great all such amazing musicians. Emerson on keys was the best ever the speed and complexity incredible, Palmer on drums my god what he did is amazing (listen for his drumming that sounds like tank tracks rolling) and Lake on guitar and vocals a true master. A three man band, who can do that in 2021? Great reaction, looks like you are hooked on Prog! Thanks so much for helping celebrating Tarkus's 50th. Try "the endless enigma part1-fuge-the endless enigma pt2", "Trilogy", "Livin Sin", "Karn Evil 9" and "Pictures at an Exhibition"

@@MarcusL1995 Rush? Really. No doubt they are good, but Keith Emerson is a composer. Highly complex music. No Doubt Rush could play this, and I have heard all of Rush and understand they have albums with great composing, and musicianship, but please go look at live footage of Keith in early 70s. He is surrounded by 4 sides of 3 stacks of keyboards, organs, pianos. He plays them effortlessly, switching back and forth from and side at any anytime. No one, mean no one had that talent in our lifetime. It wasn't even close. Just my opinion.

One of the minor things that I love is the two guitar solos in BATTLEFIELD, because Greg Lake recorded them, first, normally, then he had the tape flipped over so it was going backwards and he recorded the solos again. Then, by flipping the tape again, you hear it running normally along with the reversed!

I first heard this album about 1974 when I was thirteen. I've been a prog-rocker since. There was never quite another era in music like the prog-rock of the seventies. ELP, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator...the list goes on. Music so good that it STILL rocks people to the core. Fifty years later.

I'm with you. From '65 onward I did anything I could to get concert tickets to all those you mentioned and many more. What a rich time it was. The talent oozed from everywhere. My life revolved around the music of the day and fed me well. Most of them stand up today after all these years. And that's because of the quality and genuine creative talent - individually, and collectively. I'm afraid I find it lacking today, with a few strong exceptions.

Groups like Yes, ELP, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and Mahavishnu Orchestra are what inspired me to teach myself to play guitar. Even after a half century of listening to this music, it still blows me away every time. One album you might want to check out is "The Story of I" by Patrick Moraz, who played on Yes's Relayer album and toured with them for I think around 2 years. I saw ELP perform Tarkus live on the 1971 tour. The entire auditorium became the beast, the band it's brain, the audience it's soul. I swear for a while the beast lived and moved as one. I took two girlfriends to the show... but that's another story.

I saw them live at Yale Bowl in New Haven, CT in 1969 just before I shipped out to Viet Nam. Great show, the drummers kit was electrified and each drum he hit would light up as well in was on a carousel so it rotated and went up and down. They played the entire album before it was released. I'm now 71 and this is still one of my favorite albums. You should review LUCKY MAN from this album!!

Yes, my man, this is the progressive rock we listened to 50 years ago. Emerson, Lake and Palmer made this music with just 3 band members! ELP, Yes, early Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and others had a musical imagination that was far, far ahead of it's time. You are impressive in that you can feel the musical complexities of this music. Keith Emerson had the fastest fingers of any keyboard players, Carl Palmer was simply amazing in his drum work, percussion, and even hitting a giant gong, then don't forget Greg Lake's magical vocals along with his superb guitar skills. My first concert was ELP at Asbury Park, NJ (the Jersey Shore) the summer of 1971. It was simply unbelievable. The entire audience was roaring with pleasure!

This piece of music allowed me to feel like how I felt when I was little for the first time since childhood, been my lil kid self for a bit again, that was 6 years ago.
It taught me how to ply the drums too❤️‍🔥

Can I just say, I was listening to ELP back in the mid 80s, when I was too young to properly appreciate it; but now I'm too old to hear it new. So, I'm really glad to watch you experiencing it for the first time, because it lets me enjoy it fresh through your ears. Thank you!

Armadillo/tank on that cover. The music…. Something else entirely, eh? A lot of minds were opened back in the 60’s and 70’s. Awesome music was just one of the effects.

Great reaction to this early prog masterpiece bro!
I'd recommend a song called Knife Edge from their first album (the one before Tarkus). Then to chill you out alittle, From The Beginning from the album after Tarkus, called Trilogy.
Pretty sure you'll enjoy this band Pope, I know I always have

THIS JUST PROVES A POINT :
Today's mainstream rock music isn't even a pimple on the ass of these guys.
Try if you can ; You cannot name one mainstream rock band from today, who can equal Emerson Lake and Palmer . , or any other Progressive Rock band.

I’m so thankful this art form is getting the worldly recognition from current generations. Many many many hours playing all these, vinyl of course. Lots of reefer (it was still cool to call it reefer then). It all ushered a few mind bending psychedelic journeys too lol. Hey, it was the early 70s. Lol

This is why I watch reaction. It's like you show your buddy your record collection. (This was what it was like in the seventies.) You hear more of what you thought you knew. Like the last melody. That haunted my subconscious for decades. And all the rest I had forgotten!!

There is a misconception that everything new is better (in music) and vice versa,
    Quality is timeless.
