It gets me too. I couldn't understand why either. The video is so upbeat and the footage of him showed such a joyous and sunny person. The way he delivers the song is joyous, but yet it's a wistful, earnest and slightly mournful interpretation and it's just brilliant to get you in the feels. Some people have an amazing gift for using their beautiful voices and also connecting emotionally w/ the listener. Karen Carpenter was another w/ a rare voice and that rare gift of emotional connection that just captivates people like this man does.

This is what I asked my son to play it at my memorial. I've got a terminal condition and it won't be a long that he'll need to use it. But try the medley of Somewhere over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World.
The video shows the Hawaiians setting his soul free by pouring his ashes onto the waters of the Pacific. It wasn't sad to them, it's just the circle of life. IZ was greatly respected by Hawaiians. I first heard IZ's version when a favorite character on a TV show dies while surfing on Hawaii. I was sobbing. I believe I will subscribe Harri as you seem intelligent.

Dammit man... you seem to have a knack of picking songs with deep personal attachments to my late wife. First was ELO's "Need Her Love" and now this beautiful song. Jennifer and I were stationed in Pearl Harbor and this song by Iz was "our" song (BTW...I cannot state how impactful/big of an artist Iz was...and still is...). After Jen passed, she had two memorials. One where we settled and the other in her hometown. She was from a small town and everyone she grew up with wanted to pay respects. The day beforehand, her brother's wife showed us the slideshow to be played before the memorial...but the music hadn't been added yet. She listed the tracks and one was "Over The Rainbow". I asked which version and she said she wasn't sure. I mentioned that I hoped it wasn't the Iz (Hawaiian) version because "I won't be able to keep it together". She said she didn't think that it was going to be because of that part of the country (New Mexico/Texas). But as I sat down in the church, trying to keep things together, a song finished and then I heard THAT ukulele. It took only a few notes and that was it. It turned out that the person putting the music to the slideshow knew Jennifer and I lived there and thought that version was beautiful and appropriate. She was very, very correct.
Even though it gets me every time, thank you for reacting to his version.

This video is such an emotional roller coaster. You feel like you just found a new friend and you are amazed at his voice. You were probably thinking what else has he sang. Then you find that you're watching your new friend's funeral. Such a beautiful tribute to a man with a voice of an angel. R.I.P. IZ.

Watch the Hoku Hanohano awards where he closed the show and it was it last appearance on the annual awards show. He sang with his former band the Makaha Sons of Niihau, and at the end they all gave him a big hug and surrounded him with love and aloha as he was close to the end his journey. He had to perform with an oxygen tube in his nose to gelp hime breath. Thats dedication and love for the perpetuation of music and culture of all of Hawaii

There's a mash-up he performs, of this arrangement, but segues in the middle into, What a Wonderful World, still with the ukulele, and then finishes back into the finale of, Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
That is how I first heard him, and I fell in love with his voice. RIP IZ

I knew brother Izzy from the "Makaha Sons of Ni'hau" the band he was in with his brother and his nephews, I always liked what is called worldmusic, so not western music. So yes i was awareof his death. He also did a great version of What a wonderfull world. Al though in my opinion all his songs are great songs. A unique voice left us.

This is me and my wife's song. I was a military brat, and so spent ages 3 to 8 on Oahu. Got to meet him, and see him perform live.
He was such a gentle, caring, and giving man. I tear up almost every time I hear this song.

I first heard Iz's rendition of this song when a part of it was used in the final credits of the movie "50 First Dates". I thought it was the most beautiful version of the the song I ever heard. I used the full version as part of a cd of songs at the beginning of my wedding in 2010. Even though there were a dozen songs on the cd, quite a few folks came up to me after the ceremony and said how beautiful this one song was. It was sad to find out that he had passed. I have listened to his whole cd many times, and all of the songs are wonderful.

This is the absolute best version of this song ever, and your reaction to it was fantastic, too. Listening to this song and your reaction to it is why I am rapidly becoming addicted to your channel, Harri!! His loss was a terrible thing for the world, as we have lost another great talent. Keep on doing what you are doing, Harri, and we will be here to enjoy the ride along with you! Cheers!
