The British didn't merely "politely refuse" to surrender. Col. John Maitland of the 71st used his skills as a former Marine to brilliantly lead 800 men from Beaufort through the swamps, dragging their boats through the muddy shallows for miles, coming out in the Savannah river just ahead of the French blockade. Legend has it, Prevost had given up on the reinforcements making it through to fortify the garrison, but Maitland burst into the council chambers where surrender was being discussed at zero hour. Caked to the chest in mud, he slammed the hilt of his broadsword on the table, and said, "Any man who utters the word surrender is my decided enemy! It is necessary either he or I should fall." It should be noted he achieved all this having already lost his right arm to a French cannonball in the 7 Years War and was at that time, suffering from malaria. He then went on to command the Spring Hill redoubt before actually succumbing to malaria just days after the siege was listed. If the USMC can see fit to acknowledge this amazing feat in a display at the Parris Island museum, despite Maitland being an "opponent," then we can give credit to it here.
