An electrician once told me that if you have cables outside then place a loop in the cable lower than the device. So when it rains the water will drip off the bottom of the loop and not travel down the cable to inside. Hope that makes sense. Love the tankard, beautiful. Beer really does taste better in a glass. Completely out did yourself with the opening. I totally laughed out loud. That chair in the boat, brilliant.
The stove is the gift that keeps giving I wouldn't be without mine I have a copper kettle on top that stops on a rolling boil all day long and I am partial to a jacket potato in the fire rice pudding on the top in the tin with the lid preopened for an hour or so is also very pleasant have got a cast iron casserole as well for a stew at some point 😀 enjoy the heat and the grub that comes with it! 😀
Your 1st meal done on the stove looks better than my 1st one, the local store didn't have much, so it ended up being bacon sandwiches. While watching this, I was eating a stew that had been cooked on my stove. I totally agree, make full use of that energy. That crystal glass, spot on 👍🍺
if you can feed the tv coax cable down the center of the pipe, then mount the antenna to the top/side of the pipe, then mount the wifi antenna below the tv unit so as not to throw interference from one to the other, drill the access hole on a downward angle to feed its cable down the center of the pipe also, then make or get a metal "swivel" at the bottom of the pipe to mount it to the top of the side gunnel with the cable access through the top of the gunnel into the interior of the boat. have a large wing nut on the swivel so that when you need to lower the pipe you can loosen the swivel and lower the mast flush with the side gunnel, you'd only have to come up with an upper support to hold the mast in the upright position (maybe a cradle for the pipe when it's lying down to hold it in place) ...just a thought. You're doing fine, good luck. enjoying your videos!
Good ideas in there but I can’t rest the mast on the gunnels for two reasons. I need to walk down them and also it’ll roll into the cut. I like the swivel idea
i can see walking down the gunnel part but with only loosening the swivel wing nut it would remain attached therefore it wouldn't be able to roll off into the drink. lol you're up late!
I've cooked many a pot of stew or soup on my stove, and boiled a few cups of tea too. You may kniw this but the best way to clean the stove door glass is to wet some newspaper/rag and dip it to the ash and clean as you would a window. Works every time. No need for oven cleaner as some people use. Great vlog as usual.

That glass is great. I thought that there were enough NB vlogs in my subs but I’m loving yours. You’re doing what I bottled out of doing and bought a boat that is in need of no more than a few quid and a good old tarting up.
I agree with you about the stove, I always think of it as free cooking, get a small 1 litre kettle for your cuppas, I always have water boiling for some reason ha ha , also for your casseroles etc, get a wonderbag, you bring to the boil and then put in the wonderbag and it cooks for free, I love mine :)
You'r getting very creative with your opening scenes!! One pan cooking is great, use it a lot, stir fry veg and gnocchi. Add a rasher or two, sausages, mushrooms, the list is endless, cook the meat first then add the rest. Take care.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt we had some stunning scenery the other day and then it went down to -63 C , you're not seeing things , I'd gladly come over there and enjoy the weather you've got 😁
Hi. How about trying Ash Pan Jacket Potatoes. Using tin foil. Pop your potato on the foil rub a little oil on and than sprinkle with salt and pepper. Wrap up tightly in the foil. No gaps etc. Place in your ash pan. Ash will fall and cover potatoes. The potato will slowly cook. Does take a while. Can’t really remember how long. But probably a good few hours etc. Heat your beans etc on top. X
Hi James Very nice to see your surroundings and the boat yard, I noticed one of neighbours on the hard standing ( Liz) Earle Writes Who is on Utube doing her boat, It looks a great boatyard and good atmosphere. I think should look for a boat from them Keep up the good work 👍
Another brilliant start to your vlog. I could almost smell your dinner cooking 🥘. I magnet 🧲 fish so I could just imagine you trying to get it off the boat lol.
Any exterior cables should have a downward loop to shed the water. Now to more important matters, cook flat bread direct on stove. Nice glass for some happy crankin'. Cheers.
Hi James. Have a look at Foxes Afloat vlog on setting up tv/internet. They chose a magnet base and short pole which could drop over if knocked by (say) a branch so it can’t have been as strong magnetism as yours.
i would suggest shaving the mount because if you shave the main hollow plastic attatched to the antenna and you get it wrong youll need to get another antenna where as if you shave the mount and get it wrong you can always get another mount
In my house in the Pacific Northwest of the US, you cannot rely on the grid, I will always have a wood stove, and I cook on it all the time. the stove will never stop giving if properly maintained.
nice to see you enjoying the fire cooking, i did that myself at first but noticed that the corner of the top plate of the fire started to lift away from the box as the bottom of the pan must have been affecting it, it did take a couple of years for this to happen so i got a cast iron trivet and the problem went away. it takes longer to cook stuff but slow cooking does taste good, just needs a little extra planning.
Another fabulous entrance with stunning winter skies. I'm wondering if in the future, you'd be brave enough to emerge from the cut in a frogman's suit! I'm also wondering if you should start another channel: The Floating Post Office that James Built! Those lamb chops together with beer in a crystal glass must have gone down a treat! I'm also thinking you could give pole dancing classes on the roof with the length of that antenna mast! Keep on having fun James.
Morning Janes. Lovely opening scene on this video. Well looks like your getting really cosy on The Narrowboat that James built now lol 😆 How you managed in the early days in the cold 🥶 So much better now as we can see. Cooking tips and drinking beer 🍺 What’s your next culinary delight for cooking on your stove 🤣 Full English breakfast 🍳 It so much reminds me of living in my lorry cooking on my portable stove. I had cheese omelette for my T last night. Take care cheers Stevie 😎
I connected mine to one of these poles with a car brush on the end and it’s telescopic works a treat just move it up and down when I stop and it extends up to about 12 feet
shave down the TV antenna mate it would look way better, and squish (or form if you want to be posh) the Ali tube at the top with a vice (med size basic vice will do it) if you can get access to one less to trim off the TV antenna, single self tapper screw or two, jobs a golden and it can still be taken apart easy, just my thoughts tho, we all like to put our own style on our boats and as long as it works its correct. I am sure you have but make sure the distance between the components on the mast don't fight with each other, sometimes they need little or a shockingly large distance to prevent interference. getting there now pal and its looking peachy : D (ps jelly of the lister engine you got, they deffo give the loudest (what shouldn't be but is) a relaxing noise.
You could drill a hole the size of the thickness of the aerial bracket through the pipe, an inch or so down from the top, then cut a slot from the top down to meat the hole you just drilled. Then bend the pipe out to make two flat tabs to fit either side of the aerial bracket and bolt through.
Regarding the tunnel lights, I thought the same about the possibility of them being knocked off - not by contact with the tunnel but by tree branches hanging over the cut?
They look similar to the sort of lights i used once upon a time on a 4x4 light bar, they didn’t shift when bushing through the undergrowth or getting rattled by low carpark barriers (whoops) so they should be ok!
Make a wooden plug for the top of the comms mast that your tv aerial is attached to and to stop it all falling out the end put a bolt through the pole and the wooden plug.
If you could mount your comms pole near a window/door, you could put the 4G antanna and the wifi access point both on the pole. Then the wifi can be seen inside the boat through the door/window. Then the only connection you need to make each time you put the mast up, is the power. Far easier to arrange than an RF connector. Oh and the TV antenna, but that is simple enough.
Try cutting the pipe small piece out of the centre at the end so you end up with like 2 pieces 1 each side so the plastic bits between them drill a hole put a bolt 🔩 throw job down
Yes I agree to cutting a slot. Be careful if your going to squash the tube as it may crack. Don't trim the plastic base in the antenna as the molding is more than likely hollow and would make it weak and make a lovely entrance for spiders and bugs into the housing, not to mention damp Loving the blog, you have some lovely people giving you gifts. Beer taste much better in a glass 🍺
Shaving the mount was my 1st thought but then you mentioned that it was hollow plastic. If you cut into the plastic it will lose its strength, however I would then suggest you fill the hollow plastic with milliput. If you can also provide the depth needed for the other bracket one of your followers may 3d print 1 for you. Lamb looked great
Magnetic is the key here, so if you run into something, ( like a bridge) than it just tips over and it still sticks (ie: savable), doesn't fall into the drink or get skueshed, or smooshed. Easily removable, or relocatable if needed in a pinch. Plus if you need to rotate it for signal, no adjusting screw just give a twist. You have already experienced the strength of the magnet world. Hence sticking it to it...... CHEERS.
For the tv aerial, can you cut a slot/notch into the top of the pole then cross drill to bolt it through. Or you might be able to squash the pipe flatter if you can borrow a vice, I can’t tell if that would fit. The process for slotting (if I were doing it) would be to squash the pipe until the ID matches the width of the aerial stub, then cut down the front and back (tighter radii) before meeting those cuts perpendicularly to leave two flat tabs ready foe drilling.
A variation on that: make a round plug of sturdy (preferably UV resistant) plastic, that fits into the top of the pole, and shape it to imitate the flat vertical part of the tv aerial bracket, then use the provided bolt. You need to plug the mast top anyway if the bottom is sealed (eg) by fitting to a magnet. Water getting in and freezing can split the tube. This happened to a ham radio mast I had. (it was larger, though - 2").
Another superb intro there! Good that you got an alu mast, as ferrous metal affects antennas. Maybe find a bit of plastic or plumbing pipe narrow enough to sit down 6" into the top of the mast and then bolt the TV aerial to that, so it could then sit on the very top. Remember a cable 'drip loop' just before the hole in the outer bulkhead, leave a decent loop of slack in the cable for when you move the mast and deburr any cable holes you drill in the mast. (Beware of painting the antenna covers as some paints contain conductive pigments). Check out Foxes Afloat vlog 42. You had a very civilised meal there, good stuff !
The material does not actually matter. If it conducts, then it will affect the antennas. The 4G is probably directional anyway and that will certainly be radiating/receiving away from the mast. So the mast will not affect it. The TV antenna is probably going to be pretty omnidirectional and in practice not that affected by the mast, if it is mounted right at the top.
@@gonzo_the_great1675 ah always thought it mattered. Despite its shape, the 4G is sold as omni, so as long as its stood off the pole far enough, it should be ok in a reasonable signal area.
hi , cut the mount down to fit inside the pole and drill straight through and a bolt , leaving the mounting lug of the mount sticking out the top of the pole , or angle grind two lots in the pole and bolt straight through , sit it flush on top of the pole
Hi James, I like your idea in mounting your TVs antenna and Internet antenna together on same pole...I'm just in process of sourcing the same. At present I have a standard tv antenna , that I have to point to get the signal ...and a MYWIFI Dongle inside my boat.... My question is , do you know how good the TV antenna that you have sourced is , and details of it , would be great ...Just to let you know, I also built my boat, or should I say fitted it out, and loved every minute of it, and I'm enjoying watching you build yours. Best Mick
Mine is a 1byOne free view indoor outdoor digital TV antenna with free HDTV. Https://1byoneantennas.com I can’t vouch for it yet but it seemed to do the trick. Thanks for your comments - yes mate, loving it
May I recommend a cap of some kind on the top of the pipe to seal it, and if you are drilling a hole in the side of the pipe to run the cables, A grommet inside of the hole to protect the cables from chaffing.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt James, I would recommend running the cables in metal conduit. Especially if you are planning on running them outside. This will minimize interference and protect the cables from lines, low hanging branches. Vandalism, and weather. It can be painted to protect it from corrosion as well as blending it in with the rest of the boat. If you are mounting to the top of your boat, I guess you will need a hinge to lay it down to cruise, and not interfere with lines while mooring or in locks. Bears thinking about.
However you decide to mount your Comms mast don’t forget to bear in mind it not fouling the centre line. Even folded down it would be a pain to clear, if you needed to deploy the centre line quickly.
James, love what you're doing and the way you're doing it 😀 but what's the reason for not putting the batteries in the middle of the boat to cut down the resistance problems? 🤔
That’s Simon - I think putting the batts in the middle would cause more issues than helping relieve some cable resistance. Batts give off gases so you wouldn’t want them in the boat with you either
You are getting more elaborate with your intros and they are making me chuckle! I assume the comms mast will be mounted on the stern of the boat. You have to make the poIe easy to remove for travel. Perhaps a quick disconnect on the boat side would allow for complete removal. I would mount as you said TV at the top and 4g antenna below it. You should make sure the top of the pole has a cover and the wires can be simply taped to the pole rather than have them travel internally. It also helps prevent water ingress inside the pole.
That opening shot would make a great Christmas card next year. ;-). Those white plastic antennae are pretty naff (naff?); can they be painted to match the boat's livery? The beer glass is the best! (Love the 'fridge.') And you're eating your greens--good lad!
You can always wrap stuff in a couple of layers of tinfoil and cook it in the embers at the front of the fire. Potatoes, onions and general veg will provide the water for a good cooking environment and Sausages, beacon or minced meat will provide some oil or you can add some butter/oil. Add some seasoning and cook for about 1hr may be less, may need to experiment with timings a bit and extract using your fire gloves 👍 Used to do this in scouts on camp 😊. Like the idea of a Dutch oven, you could perhaps bake some bread, you can get pre-prepared bread mixes from most supermarkets, just add some salt and water and get kneading
Love the opening shot James. Very picturesque. It was making me feel cold seeing you trampling through that snow. James, regards the TV antenna, cut down the existing bracket and fix that into the pole, then screw the antenna on as normal. Using this method should not invalidate any guarantee. Just a thought, why not put the lamb in foil and put it in the fire for a bit, or even lay some foil on the top of the stove in a moulded tray shape, and cook that way? Quiker heat transfer? ;-) BTW, onions just cooked in the fire, as they come, are lovely with some bread and butter, especially the black burnt bits from the outside. All this is making me hungry (again!). I look forward to the next episode of The Meal That James Cooked.
Not bothered about warrantee but it may affect waterproofing that’s my concern and that bracket needs a lot of cutting down to work. Might try squashing pipe to make bigger. I’m cooking with coal so even in foil it will still take on bad stuff. Will do that with wood only though - sounds good
Fascinating to see more of the wharf, there’s more of it than I expected. Check out the ‘Nagging on a narrowboat’ channel, they have a video where they cook a pork fillet in the ash pan of their stove
Don't cut the aerial casing, you may compromise the waterproofing.can you not slot the ally pipe and bolt through it.failing that your idea if modifying the clamp bracket would be better.
Hi james love ur vlogs just watch ur vlog and noticed as u walk bak towards ur boat it looks lower in the front is that the case or am i seeing things keep safe 😀
Antena montage Rather than chopping the plastic fitting to pieces maybe a wooden plug wedged/ screwed into the aloy tube and then screw the plastic antenna fitting onto the plug cheers

The grandest entrance yet! I’m sure we can expect some fanfare in the near future🎺🎺🎺
Glad you liked it.....but that’s it......that was the holy grail of entrances - by water. Ok the boat could have been a tad sharper but still!!!
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt as they say James... size isn’t everything 🤭 bet the lamb chops and salad went down a treat👌
Loads of excellent info in there - thanks 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
The material does not actually matter. If it conducts, then it will affect the antennas. The 4G is probably directional anyway and that will certainly be radiating/receiving away from the mast. So the mast will not affect it. The TV antenna is probably going to be pretty omnidirectional and in practice not that affected by the mast, if it is mounted right at the top.
@@gonzo_the_great1675 ah always thought it mattered. Despite its shape, the 4G is sold as omni, so as long as its stood off the pole far enough, it should be ok in a reasonable signal area.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Will you need an FM or DAB radio aerial?
hi , cut the mount down to fit inside the pole and drill straight through and a bolt , leaving the mounting lug of the mount sticking out the top of the pole , or angle grind two lots in the pole and bolt straight through , sit it flush on top of the pole
I’m going for the latter but I’m going to squeeze the pipe in a vice first to get some extra width
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt , if you can find a bit of steel similar thickness as the mount squeeze it on that bit of hammering two flat surfaces
Hi James,
I like your idea in mounting your TVs antenna and Internet antenna together on same pole...I'm just in process of sourcing the same.

I can’t vouch for it yet but it seemed to do the trick. Thanks for your comments - yes mate, loving it
May I recommend a cap of some kind on the top of the pipe to seal it, and if you are drilling a hole in the side of the pipe to run the cables, A grommet inside of the hole to protect the cables from chaffing.
I’ll be using a grommet for sure but there won’t be a hole at the top as that will be covered by the TV antenna 👍🏼
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
James, I would recommend running the cables in metal conduit.
Tap the end of the Ali tube to make oval then put TV Ariel inside ? Regards rikki 😉
I thought exactly the same as Rikki Ross. Squash the end of the tube a bit to oval.
However you decide to mount your Comms mast don’t forget to bear in mind it not fouling the centre line. Even folded down it would be a pain to clear, if you needed to deploy the centre line quickly.
I had to pause the video during cookery class. You made me hungry so had to go off and make a cheese and onion butty! 😀
Oh now you’ve made me hungry !!!
10:21 Antifreeze in the water in the marina, so it doesn't freeze..............LOL
I didn't know that, thank you for replying 👍 keep warm
You are getting more elaborate with your intros and they are making me chuckle!
I assume the comms mast will be mounted on the stern of the boat. You have to make the poIe easy to remove for travel. Perhaps a quick disconnect on the boat side would allow for complete removal.
I would mount as you said TV at the top and 4g antenna below it. You should make sure the top of the pole has a cover and the wires can be simply taped to the pole rather than have them travel internally. It also helps prevent water ingress inside the pole.
I have the poynting one outside my house James. The jubilee clamp works well
Good to know - thanks - I’ll go with that then
That opening shot would make a great Christmas card next year. ;-). Those white plastic antennae are pretty naff (naff?); can they be painted to match the boat's livery? The beer glass is the best! (Love the 'fridge.') And you're eating your greens--good lad!
I’m tempted to paint the whole mast and yeah could do the antenna too.
Thought you had run out of ideas !...That must be the best entrance yet ...lol
Now I’ve run out of ideas!!!!
will the ali pole not expand when heated th fit the arial.
Would the TV antenna mount bracket be able to be drilled to act as the backplate for the 4G antenna amount?
Could you cut a little bit off the unit so it sits in the tube, then drill a hole in the side of the pole to bolt it on the top?
That was my plan but people are suggesting that may harm the waterproofing
You can roast hotdogs in the fire. If you had a smaller cast iron skillet , you can cook a variety of food in the the fireplace.
Oh great - it’s lovely - perfect position to cook on !

Good point !!
I’m going to see if I can squeeze the pipe in a vice and make it fit ??
Why dont you get a pot that slow cooks casseroles etc. it could be prepared during the day and have a meal in the evening
Hi james love ur vlogs just watch ur vlog and noticed as u walk bak towards ur boat it looks lower in the front is that the case or am i seeing things keep safe 😀
Get yourself a cast iron skillet mate. Much better heat retention when cooking on a wood/coal stove
You've gone from Grizzly Adams to Delia Smith in one vlog.
hammer the top of the pole flat , drill a hole and mount through that. ??
Antena montage Rather than chopping the plastic fitting to pieces maybe a wooden plug wedged/ screwed into the aloy tube and then screw the plastic antenna fitting onto the plug cheers
Ok - won’t hack up the plastic end then

I have a extendable flag pole I bought off Amazon. It has sections that extent and store inside each other and just twist to lock out. The Pointing aerial is good but I found it not very good at low level. Higher the better. I bought a different one that is loads better...
The issue I have with extending ones is the cable length and chaffing. What did you do
Someone send James a wireless lavalier microphone kit!
I was just going to comment about the audio, have ditched a few video already because of this.
Someone will send a film crew

Brilliant vlog James. Loved the camping chair in the dinghy, what an entrance!
Was that the first meal cooked on the boat?
Is the 4G antenna Omni directional?
Cheers from S.F. Bay Area.
Glad the camping chair didn’t give in!! First meal cooked on the boat and yes it’s omnidirectional
