- We don't often talk about the outro licks in Iron Maiden songs, and that's a shame because there are some real brilliant guitar moments at the end of some of their songs. In this video, I go over six of them.

"The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" needs way more love! Legit has one of their best outro licks ever. The lick starts at 5:33 in the actual song for anyone interested
People either love it or hate it, and I happen to be in the first camp. 😊
I've done a full cover, a part by part breakdown explaining the way the song is structured, composed and arranged, and I've even covered the solos individually.
But that's not what you can refer to as outro licks. Rather, it's a full on outro section made up of a harmonized melody over a new rhythm part.

The guitar work near the end of children of the damned, seventh son of a seventh son and the acoustic at the end of the prophecy were the ones that always stuck with me. Great work as always.
The one at the man of sorrows is outstanding too
The final Adrian lick in The Evil That Men Do chorus, always moves me.

And on "Sea Of Madness" the combo Adrian's lick /Bruce's descending iines, it's pure magic!
The outro lick to Senjutsu gives me chills up and down my spine. That was the perfect way to end that song.

An outro that always stuck with me is The Prophecy since its classical acoustic based, and we don't hear too much acoustic Maiden that often.

The whole ending instrumental for The Thin Line Between Love and Hate. Amazing outro licks and one of my favorite closers to any album. Even though Nicko Mcbrain fu**ing missed it at the end. LOL.
That song is immense and yet benefits from Nicko's charm at the end. It's like they went through the entire spectrum of human emotion and ended with a much needed ice-breaker. The emotion is there all the more because he knows how perfect the song sounded. Beautiful.
Dave co-wrote it and played all five solos!!! Love that track, the ending is like a jam session. They let loose and walk away from the usual galloping and straight forward approach.

Ever since I first heard that ending of Senjutsu, I was blown away. Adrian just has a super special and unique touch. He really knows how to add details or that little cherry on top that just makes you go, “wow.”

I saw Iron Maiden in Tulsa on 15 September and it was hands down the greatest concert I've ever been to. All those classic tracks were Beastly, as it were.
It's just incredible how good their performance is right now!

Sea of madness so underrated song .The whole album its underated basicaly from iron maiden themselves .so many years i can't understand why maiden plays the same songs live they have some many beautiful songs and they play the same over and over again
Putting a set list together that makes sense when you play gigs that big and have 17 studio albums worth of material from a 40+ year career is no easy task. Also, I don't have official stats but very likely the percentage of hardcore fans at the shows is a lot lower than you'd expect. They are already playing 3 new songs on this tour which many people I attendance won't recognize so that's pretty much all they can get away with, realistically.

love this video, I find that some of the outro licks are better than the solo. I do not mean any Maiden songs but other bands songs. It's like I can't wait til the end of the song just to hear the outro licks.

#4 feels like a leftover lick from Tattooed Millionaire’s Son of a Gun. Not just because of the key of the song, but mostly due to the phrasing. Not that I object, Son of a Gun features my fav Janick solo and licks.

It's great that you do these videos without a backing track and just rely on your outstanding guitar skills...its so impressive how you just pick up your guitar and bang out these riffs and solos without any back up..long may it continue...top job.
Agree with the The Prophecy comment here. Not only is it my favourite Maiden outro but probably my favourite outro of all time and that alone makes it my favourite track from SSOASS for sure. I've always thought Janick had an excellent ear for little outro noodles.
I think sometimes the outro solos are ad-libed in the studio at times maby that's why they don't repeat them exactly live....great lesson thank you..
I'm sure they are often ad-libbed. Sometimes like Wasting Love or rainmaker, they are played very close to the original because they are so recognizable, others like Senjutsu or If Eternity Should Fail they're more loosely based on the original. With TWOTW Jan doesn't play any licks at all and it's really unfortunate 😔
I don't know if i can to call it a lick but the final choruses of Wildest Dreams always blows my mind

now that you mention wasting love i have to say that fear of the dark (the album itself) has some of Maiden greatest guitar work... i really love the solos and licks of wasting love, fear is the key, from here to eternity, afraid to shoot strangers, childhood's end and the apparition to name a few songs that sometimes are overlooked
No Prayer also. Janick is on fire. I believe Janick was at his best in the 90s, some of the stuff he played was insane. Now he's kind of overshadowed by Dave and Adrian
I think the outcome licks in Stranger In A Strange land are one of their best

Nice choices, boss man! I love the end of Senjutsu after they've started the album essentially with the entirety of a movie plot the size of Kingdom of Heaven. You feel the walls finally coming down after the Samurai have dominated their foes for so long until they've fought to the last man, and where Davey's last lick comes in, our wounded and outnumbered hero falls at the hands of the feudal warlord's best men, defeated but stoic and resolute to the bitter end. Sorry lol Maiden does this to my imagination a lot.
Absolutely perfect comment and exactly how Maiden makes me feel all the time. Maiden is so much more than just a metal band...its hard to explain to anyone but another Maiden fan...lol. UP THE IRONS 🤘
This is probably one of their most cinematic albums ever. Every song is like a mini movie playing in your mind... Craziness!

Thank you! I used a basic preset (I think it was Barstool Warrior or something like that) and I tweaked it a bit by turning down the gain, removing the doubler and adding a bit of mids.

That's not really an outro lick though. It's more of an entire outro section which is a different thing. Definitely one of their more beautiful and unexpected endings!

I think they are overlooked because they reduce strength to the song, but they are greate anyway \m/ \m/
