It's definitely worth analyzing this piece! Even if one isn't a Maiden fan, there is so much cool stuff going on from both guys... It's a classic metal guitar clinic really!

The inspiration of this solo was from "Walking in the air" : a music from the cartoon "The Snowman" which was made from the book of Raymond Briggs the author of "When The Wind Blows".

I was fortunate enough to see Maiden on this tour. This solo section made quite an impression on a young guitarist. Nico, thanks very much for doing this lesson, it brought back a lot of memories. 🤘

@@LicksOfTheBeast - One other note from that time period. I vividly remember the very first time I heard that album when it was released. A friend of mine and I were sitting in his pick up truck and he cranked it up! I remember him saying that 30 years from now we would still remember these riffs and still be listening to them. I never doubted him for a second and he wasn’t wrong!!

I have thought about it but I decided not to because what made that solo was the interplay between them live. I might revisit it to analyze a few more licks in the future but there is nothing like watching the actual live footage. It's an absolute treat! 🙂

I’m glad you picked the Leicester show, that’s the one I was going to ask what you thought Dave used for effects… it’s sopping wet with chorus or something and I love it lol… what did he use, and how else can it be achieved?
Mainly chorus and delay, and he also has a phase 90 or a univibe for some bits.
And don't overdo it on the gain so that you get that chimey clarity. 🙂

That's true! Some of the bootleg recordings are quite good so I imagine the Maiden camp would at least have one take that sounded good enough for a b-side.

Waiting every week for the new video :D. Small question: Adrian's lick from about 5:10: do you mute the G,B and E strings? If so, how?:D. Your index finger on the fretting hand doesn't seem more flat the the others, so I'm just curious if and how you've done it;). How do you mute thinner strings if you play thicker? Your playing always sound crisp and I'm interested how:)
A lot of it is in how you rest your picking hand across the strings. There is some light muting going on all the time. I practice a lot with an amp with good volume, enough gain so that any imperfections stand out but not so much that it hides mistakes. It's unforgiving but it helps you spot where you need to make adjustments.
@@LicksOfTheBeast So as far as I understand you also use your right hand to mute thinner strings as well as resting your palm on the thicker? I image this maybe as creating a little bridge with side of your palm and side of your pinky? String that your currently playing on would be "under the bridge"? ;D

You know what though, I'm playing the licks slowly, I show where on the neck I am playing, and you can also slow it down even more here...it should be super easy to follow along. 😊
@@LicksOfTheBeastalso this way of learning just by your own ears and eyes gives you so much more experience than just following tabulatures…me personally I never use tabs, it’s always just ears until I figure it out. I would also recommend this way of learning songs to every beginner player, because this allows you to really get to know what’s going on on the fretboard. Also singing the melody and playing at the same time works very well

I might at some point but there is just something about the moment, the big stage and of course Dave and Adrian at that point in time that no cover version (no matter how good) will ever capture.
