If it hasn't already been mentioned you should try your G425 set in the +1° loft and flat setting. The extra loft would give you a bit higher trajectory and the flat setting would help tame the over draw flight you're producing

I have done that to both my G425 Max 5wood and 7 wood. As well my Mizuno hot metals were ordered in with 2 degrees more loft and 2 degrees flatter to suit my swing. Works for me.

I switched from a 3 wood to a 4 wood several years ago and added a 7 wood to the bag. Have also struggled with hooking the ball and found that I needed to go to a heavier shaft with lower torque and a stiffer tip. Added a Cobra LTDx 3 wood lofted up to 16.5 paired with a Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7S shaft this year and it is the best I’ve ever had, especially off the turf. The “4” wood is my 225-235 Yard club and the 7 wood is my 205-215 yard club.

Damn you’re frickin wacking those things lol. My 3 wood is about 210-220, but it’s also 13 degrees because it was my dad’s from when he swung crazy fast and wanted it to stay low. When I’ve tried a normal 3 wood it’s been around 225-240. My 4 and 3 iron bridge the gap because I personally don’t like hybrids, or 5 woods.

I would have to recommend lofting it down to a 4 wood. Should help straighten it up as well. (No expert here that's just what I would do)

Hi Gabe. I went from a 3 wood to the 3HL and am extremely happy now. I too was topping and pulling my 3W. Now with the few degrees more loft, seem to hit it way better. Sure about 10 yrds shorter, but in the air and on the fairway. I also went from ping to callaway. Both are very forgiving and that's what I need these days.

I pulled the 3 wood several years ago. Same as you I just "lost it" off the deck. Sneaks back in now again for brief appearances but the consistency just hasn't returned. Golf will always be a game of misses. And once the confidence in a club isn't there the misses tend to be bad. With the hybrids and utility (17* Pursuit DRX) my misses tend to be more on the "good" side. Generally a miss hit that comes up short as opposed to directionally challenged in places I'd rather not be. Losing a few yards as opposed to collecting strokes is a trade off I've come to live with.

I always liked woods, but I was fitted for a modern Titleist 3 wood, which was fine off the tee, but I topped maybe 1 or 2 times out of 5 off the fairway, so I barely used it except a few tee shots, maybe once or twice a round. As I age, I've lost speed and distance, and need some punch off the fairway more than my hybrid. So I took my 4I out, and put in my old Callaway Big Bertha 5 wood, and I love hitting it off the deck, so I added a few yards over my Hybrid, and I can hit some high/low/fade shot shapes, choke down on it hit it 140-150 if I want, it's been really useful, hit it maybe 10 times a round, takes a lot of pressure off my mid irons. Got me thinking, maybe I should pull my 3 wood and replace it with my old Callaway 3 wood. I hit it great off the deck, rarely miss-hit, and it's fine off the tee. So my point is that the shape and setup of the club seems to matter to me, the old callaway fairway woods are nice and flat on the bottom with a sharp leading edge, I'm thinking that maybe the center of gravity on the old wood are a bit lower, more suitable for hitting off the deck compared to the modern Titleist which is better set up for higher swing speeds and forgivingness off the tee...

When you first use a 5wd, you can get the ball going Left - one of the reasons is that when you look down and see more loft than you're used to seeing, you can for whatever reason get into a closed-face position - I've seen it many times. You currently place your trail right foot significantly inside your left - this is making for a substantial in-to-out path - while you might need/like this with your driver, I would significantly reduce it for 3&5 woods.

    Thanks mate that was awesome.
For a while, I played a 17 degree 4-wood & a game improvement 3-iron (19-degree). It worked quite well for me, until my ballstriking & clubspeed improved a lot; both of them ballooned out on me.
I now carry a 15 degree 3 wood and a 19 degree hybrid (Cleveland launcher), which is by far the easiest club to hit off the tee, out of the rough & from the fairway; I thoroughly recommend that club!

  • @davep2945

Older video I know but I only carry two clubs that aren't going to be hit from the fairway. The driver and the putter. Everything else has to do double duty or it can't be in the bag. I learned a long time ago that if the driver wasn't working off the tee the three wood wasn't going to either and I'm way too much of a sweeper to consistently hit a 3 wood off the fairway. So I went to a 5 wood and never wanted for a 3 wood again. Eventually as designers made fairway woods launch higher I went to a 4 wood at 17 degrees versus 18 degrees with roughly the same length shaft as my old 5 wood and the combo of new school launch angle and spin gave me about 15 more yards consistently without getting me in trouble. I tried a more modern 3 wood but even the best tech gurus could not make one where my swing and the 3 wood could ever be friends. 17 degrees and 42" of length off the deck is my distance and consistency sweet spot. And that's the way I judge any long club. What can I do with it off the ground first and then the tee shot is just gravy.

I really like my stealth 3w but it’s the High launch version so 16.5*. I can hit it off the deck usually pretty well even as a mid 16ish handicap. Callaway does do a HL version of the rougest 3w. Should be something that would be fun to see to try.

I have two 7 woods now. One goes high about 170 yds. and the other goes low and will run out to about 190-210 depending if I turn it over or cut it. I am 68 and have an awful time getting 3 or 5 wood off the deck. If you investigate, you will see that 5, 7, or 9 wood have same length shaft, so loft is only difference. Also each company may have different loft for 4-9 wood and the number on bottom will vary. Just use what works for you.

  • @dougmael
    @dougmael 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Gabe, based on the distances that you got with that 5-wood, something seems "off". I play a 4-wood (16.5* loft set to 15.75*) and a 7-wood (21* loft set to 20*), and my average distances are about 230 to 240 yards with the 4-wood and 200-210 yards with the 7-wood. I own a few 5-woods (most are 18* loft, but one is 19*), and I generally get more than 225 yards with the 5-woods when I play them. I would expect you to get at least 225 and probably closer to 230 yards with a properly-fitted 5-wood, based on the distances that you say you hit your driver and that you used to hit your 3-wood before you lost confidence in it. I am actually a proponent of playing a 4-wood (1/2" to 3/4" shorter shaft than used in the 3-wood, and 16* to 17.5* loft) and staying away from a 3-wood for virtually all but the lowest-handicap, highest clubhead speed golfers.

  • @markk171

I swapped out my 3 wood for a 5 wood last year. I love my 5 wood...can't hit it as far (I can carry it around 215 - 220 and can get 230 - 240 rollout off the tee ) but I have much more control with it. My 3 wood I was just too inconsistent. Now after getting used to he 5 wood...took me a bit but what I found off the tee...tee it low...almost like an iron because its meant to hit down on it. I found tee'ing it up a bit it did fly really high...after playing around with tee height, tee it low and what a difference it made in distance, control and shape.

  • @kymstock1852
    @kymstock1852 2 ปีที่แล้ว

My problem exactly, but maybe because of different reason. My issue with 3 wood is reducing swing speed with age. The ball just does not fly high enough and carry distance is reduced by lack of air time. I tried a 5 W and yes it went higher, but I lost more distance than I want to give up. I put a longer shaft in the 5W 43-44inch but lost control ( left misses). The total distance was not enough gap between my 7 wood and the 5 Wood, and I controlled the 7 wood better. Exit the 5 Wood and I adjusted the 3W to 16 degrees and settled to use it off the tee only, or if I wanted a low running fairway shot. I do find that a fade shape shot spins higher and stays in the air longer. My next experiment is to use an older Cleveland 3 Wood FL 17 degree/ HT ( less weight in the head and shaft= more swing speed, maybe more distance) . If that doesn't work well, I am considering trying a Cleveland Hi-wood 3+ to get a club that goes higher and stays in play ( distance should be 5 wood equivalent) / easier to hit more often.

As I said in the last video, replaced my 3 with a 5 and really hot some great shots now and the addition of the 7 wood guves me some great options on the fairways. Don't even need a hybrid now.
Btw, the draw may be the offset or the lie. You should be able to drop the loft down as well to get more distance.

Simple solution. Crank that Ping 3 wood up a degree or so and turn it into a 4 wood. Think many of us have had similar issues w/ground interaction w/a standard 3 wood, so Found the next best option for me being a Taylormade Stealth 3 HL @ 16.5 degrees. Don't really lose much distance off the tea and alot easier of the deck. Could be answer to your problem.

  • @home4ya
    @home4ya 2 ปีที่แล้ว

when I went to Ping last year I needed to fill gap B/T driver & 4hybrid, i assumed it was 3 wood... well... after 10 hits w 3wood and 5 wood I only lost 10 yards w 5wood BUT contact was 100% higher w 5wood. so now I have G410 5wood set at up to 16.5 which is about a 4wood with a 5 wood shorter shaft, a win win...its my 220-230 gap! driver at 260, 5wood at 225, 4hybrid at 195.... may add a 3hybrid for 210.... (PS if I need 225 - 240 like a dog leg, I do a 2" choke down, tee down, 3/4 stinger w driver, it is my biggest sweet spot so I use it when able)

I don’t know about others but I find lofting a club up seems to work better than going down. I would loft up on the 3w rather than down on the 5w. It has to do with lie angle. Take the g425 from 14.5 to 16 and see if that works better. The g425 sits flatter to begin with than the Callaway. I play a g425 at 16 4W and play a 7w I changed the shafts out on both to the Evenflow blue stiff and tipped the 3w 1/2 inch and the 7w 1” works perfect

i was thinking four wood myself. I remember having one as a teen (albeit because it was given to me and I didn't have anything else) and it seemed to be the best of both worlds. As for distance I would have thought you would have been a bit longer with the five wood than that. I have an ancient (I mean TM 200 Steel) five wood and I get similar distances that you do with the Rogue. Honestly that doesn't make sense. You average about 10 yards longer than me with most of your clubs so I expected about 215 on average with the fiver. So maybe it is just a case of getting used to the club. Or maybe it isn't the right five wood. I wonder if a 425 or 430 five wood might be a choice.

Thinking about replacing both the 3 and the 5 wood with a 4 wood. Really struggling with the 3 and the 5 doesn't quite go as far as I need it to. I think a modern 4 wood design could replace both of them. Both are at least 10 if not 15 years old. I'm actually thinking about the Maltby Direct to Consumer line. Maltby quality is always very good and you can't beat their pricing. Brand new 4 wood with stock graphite shaft is $85, so it would not be an expensive experiment although it is a fixed hosel, so no adjustments. Big Brand pricing is ridiculous.

High handicapper here - have done similar experiments - found out I need to keep the Driver 3 Wood and 5 Wood in bag !
Losing Driver is too much of an ask! What I found best practice was to be absolutely ruthless in your club selection for each hole off the tee!
    Wide open = Driver
Wide with few hazards = 3 Wood
Narrow and tricky = 5 Wood
Off the deck different story :NEVER the 3 wood ever !
5 wood always or my 4 hybrid - never 3 Wood off the deck - I hit a totally bad shot or a great strike that goes forever then into the ditch forest lake swamp!!
I practice my second shot as it my most important shot - go 5?wood or hybrid !
There is a case for high handicap golfers losing their 3 Woods and working real hard on their Driver - and adding a really reliable second shot club !

I carry 3,5,7 W and 6H . I am not long 220 drive so I need these clubs for second shots. 7 W definitely the easiest to hit , it’s called 7 heaven for a reason. If you can hit that 170 happy days. 3W v 5W is always distance versus accuracy. I would have both make sure they are as best suited to your swing as possible (I have Tour Edge E722) for 3W. Then choose the club depending on how much room you have to miss. Better to be 30 yds shorter on the fairway than in the jungle! The shaft is key because of the length and loft of the club mishits are exaggerated so test lots of clubs and shafts.

Gabe, you don't need two clubs that do basically the same thing, which is your hybrid and this 5 wood. You don't hit the 5 wood far enough, plus the Rogue has some built in draw bias, which you don't need. My thought would be to try a 16.5 degree fairway wood, which should be easier to hit than your Ping 14.5 degree fairway wood and 10-15 yards more distance than the Callaway 5 wood. I would suggest the Titleist TSR3 model, which allows you to adjust the loft and lie to get the flight you want.

Ditched the 3 wood several years ago & haven't looked back. Easier to hit the 5 wood more consistently, better launch & more accurate. Most recreational golfers lack the necessary club head speed to hit a 3 wood properly. For me the 3 & 5 wood went virtually the same distance so it made the 3 wood a redundant club.

considered replacing the 3 w/a 5 wood - was a no go. the 3 is much longer, especially off the tee. my bag is now 3, 5, 7 wood. instead of replacing the 3 w/the 5, I just added the 5 wood and dropped my 4 iron as it is similar in distance to the 5 iron.

The G425 has a hosel adjustments for loft (±1.5°) and lie angle. Have you considered that as a possibility? Great thing about Curated is they allow you to use the club and return it if you are not satisfied with your purchases within 14 days.

Don’t know that it’s a good idea to swap a club because of a swing problem, probably better to fix the swing problem if it’s ongoing. However I do understand the thought about your gapping on that course. I just recently added a TM mini driver to my bag for two reasons. It is super easy to hit straight and relatively long. I have days when I struggle with my driver for whatever reason and having a fairway finder that is in the neighborhood of my driver is great. Second, I hit it off the tee better than my 3 wood for holes that need a 240’ish yard well placed tee shot.
Like a few others mentioned already, my 3 wood is adjustable and I’ve tweaked it to 16.5* to gap better between my Driver, mini and 7 wood. So far it’s working, but more time will tell.
I have a few spare clubs that can be added and subtracted from my bag if I’m playing certain courses with problematic holes like you have in this video example.

Gabe I recently did the same thing. My 5 wood is only two yards shorter then my 3 wood because it has the tour ad shaft in it which is a stellar fit. I have also found throughout my entire bag that loft is my friend. I struggle getting the ball airborne so more loft makes that easier and my shots tend to hold the green all the way up to my 5 wood.
That being said, every player is different maybe a 3 is a better option for you or maybe a shaft that fits your swing a smidge better. Either way…good video and cool experiment! 😎

4 wood could be a Goldilocks club for you Gabe. Callaway (3HL) and Titleist make them. Not sure about others. Around that 16.5 to 17 degrees loft. Actually it’s a pity the Callaway doesn’t have an adjustable neck, cos with that draw, if you could take the loft down, it would open the club face a little and not just improve the distance, but also straighten the ball flight a bit.

I was thinking about doing this but was talking to my friend(coach) pga pro and he had already pasted down a ventus blue 6.0 velcro on my Driver and have added 20 to 30 yards. I have the same year and make of 3 wood head so we talked about it and instead of new 5 wood put a matching shaft in a 7.0 and I have not gained 20 to 30 hahah I have added about 10 to 15 yards but it is alot more consistent off tee and fairways. I have a 3 20deg super hybrid from Callaway great out of sand rough and punching out of wood when need be my favorite club is a 7 wood that I fix alot more comfortably from the fairways then the Hybrid ...now the main gap problem is I hit my 7 iron 150 155 Carry I hit my 6 iron 155 carry 5 iron 4 iron about 100 yards on the ground so I'm looking to practice my ass off and get the 6 as comfortable as I am with 7 and lower if that doesn't help I have talked to my friend about testing a 9 wood and Dhy stealth in 5 iron the 160 to 185 gap is killing me I hit 7 I'm short I hit my 7 wood I'm long I'm happy that this is the last gap issue I seem to have but as my Driver and 3 wood have gotten better this year I hit more 175 180 shots then I used to when my Driver was 25 yards shorter if anyone has any thing to help please feel free but my mortal teacher if you see this please please help hahaha

Have you ever considered choking down a couple of inches on your driver and taking a 2/3 to 3/4 swing? It will go as far as 3 or 5 wood from the tee and has a much bigger face so the chance hitting a decent shot is much better. Then pick a fairway you can hit off the deck and don’t worry about hitting anything but driver on par 4s and par 5s. The consistency of strike with a choked down less than full swing driver will amaze you!

I have the Stealth five wood and love it. I play off 4, and it goes an average 215 yards. If you bit driver well, don't get too hung up on distance, but then again it's what makes you comfortable?

Great video, Gabe. The Rogue Max fairway woods are pretty draw-biased, which accounts for some of the lefties. The LS is more neutral, but also lower spin, and with your closed stance and very in-to-out delivery, I'm worried you'd just hit low knuckley dippers. They'd roll forever, though. Well, they'd roll forever in Ireland...probably not so much in Florida! Maybe just try out some other brands. Fairway woods are extremely personal - even more so than putters and irons.
My numbers are pretty close to yours through the bag - I'm just a tad slower - and I've found that 4-wood, 16º-17º, is kind of the sweet spot for me. Flight is plenty high enough but still gets roll when I need it (....I mean... I always need the roll, really). And basically the same distance as my 3-wood off the turf (probably a bit more), which is almost exclusively where I'll use it. I prefer to take a little off driver in the rare instances where I'm worried I'll "hit it too far" off a tee. And I'm not going for many par-5s in two, just bashing my second shot down there as far as I can. So my requirements for a fairway wood are fairly modest. 😄

Most golfers need to carry a three wood and a five wood, unless you hit the driver at least 250. Unless you are such a good golfer that you regularly shoot in the mid 70s or below, use the three wood only when you CAN reach the green with a well hit three wood. If you can’t reach the green, hit the five wood for the more consistent and straighter shot that it is a little more likely to produce, vs the harder to hit three wood.

Why not keep both? Maybe turn 3 wood up to 15.5 or 16 which will close the face a bit and keep the 5 wood at 18-19. Do you have room in bag for both? I am doing a similar experiment with the Ping G425 SFT 3 wood and 5 wood. Turned the 16 up to 17.5 and the 19 down to 17.5 and tried them both out at a scramble yesterday. Hit the 3 wood better due to closed face and the 5 wood worse due to open face. Think I may keep both and go 3 wood at 17 and then 5 wood at 20. Best of both worlds but I have room for both since I go 5 iron-U wedge.

I’d be willing to bet a stealth plus 5w playing at 18* or TSR2 16.5 is going to be a better fit. Hotter clubs that are less draw biased. This is why you gotta get fit. Hopefully curated will take that Callaway back. The 4w or 5w is the right club choice. The rogue at max is just not a good fit for you. It’s not a particularly hot face and quite a bit draw biased. And with the glued hosel - you can’t open the face/lower loft to get what you need.

I’m half way through the video and you asked for comments, here’s mine. I’m one of those casual golfers who doesn’t use their driver much because of exactly what you said, when you miss, it’s OB. I primarily use my 3 wood with good results. I hit it around 250 which I’m happy with. Therefore for me, a 5 wood is def out of the question simply because potentially losing 20+ yards is out of the question regardless if the 5 wood is a little more accurate.

After 3 rounds I went back to the 3w and had to build my confidence back with it. Luckily I didn't have much $ in the 5w and was able to sell it pretty quick. Hope you have better luck with yours!! Easy to talk yourself out of the 3 wood, but in reality, it's giving you probably 20 yards more than the 5 wood. In a wide open par 5 fairway, I would sure like to have the 3 wood. I'd keep it in the bag! In comparison, I got my 5 wood 200-210 and my 3 wood 215-240. Not giving up on either of them!
