I don't think he was trying to be funny. I think he was trying to say "At this point, he probably is.. dead.." Being a kids show I doubt they can throw words like death or dead so my guess is they just left that line.

Am I the only one who found the death where young Robin shot the joker(uncensored) a lot less gruesome than the one where he electrocuted himself (censored)?

I dunno, I think if Tim was directly responsible for the Joker being electrocuted, it would have been a lot more disturbing. As it stands though the uncensored version is better. I like that smile that Batman has when Tim throws away the gun though.

You see, I think the problem here was having a scene with a child pointing a gun at someone and shooting them, it doesn't matter if it was more gruesome than the original scene, or like in this case, less, the fact is that there's no way you could possibly get away with that and still keep a PG-13 rating. Looking at the movies key demographic at the time, they had to change it for the DVD release to be commercially viable.
Personally, I think that neither scene was quite "dark" enough for the unrated release, though I did quite like the electrocution better. Though it did slightly give off the feel that it was kinda just "shoved in" between the scenes without proper editing, on the whole I though it was pretty good.
That's not to say that the other scene was bad, but it was just too simple if you ask me, relatively quick and painless (considering who we're dealing with lol), reflects none of robin's emotional instability and insanity in the moment (aiming the gun and consciously choosing to murder the joker) the electrocution on the other hand felt like it had a Frankenstein-esque feel with nervously furtive poetic irony at the end, as in "killed gruesomely by the horrible monster you created but couldn't control", kinda personifies Jokers life that way.
I also REALLY like the part where he threw the gun away, that simple moment, it has an emotionally deranged feel, after he turns on the joker, it really feels like for a split second that you can see him thinking "I don't need a gun, I'm gonna finish this with my bare hands, I'm crying inside for what you've done to me, I'm gonna kill you laughing and watch you suffer in pain before you die, I just want make you suffer, [painful involuntary laughing] die, die", BUT, it isn't automatic, he doesn't do it straight away, that small pause magnifies and highlights his emotional instability and clinical insanity, with everything that him and bruce have ever been though conflicting in that one moment, the sheer emotion there, that implied effect, as well as the imagery in that painfully clarifying moment were both really good.
The one thing missing from the scene was that it shouldn't have EXACTLY been an accident, I think having Robin play a subtle, but definitely more significant part in Joker's "accident" (something as simple as randomly pushing on the mains while under the influence of the "experiment", or just making him lose his balance) so that it could at least be implied on some level (even if within doubt) that he played a part in actually "murdering" the joker (and in that moment, "HALF" going against everything batman taught him, while doing the very thing batman could never do) would really have been the best play when covering the script. The significance of being half batman's protege and half jokers, there is symbolic significance in having him aggressively struggling against joker in a dangerous environment and quite plausibly (but not directly) "responsible" for taking his life as his "traitorous" murderer
And lastly, come on people! The unrated version was supposed to be unrated for a reason! Even if it WAS off-screen, they really should've put a lot more effort into a bone chilling end worthy of the Legend that kept you up at night, not a fading scream and a cutaway to CATWOMAN! The offscreen moment at the end needed 10,000% more bite and brief fear, (like when you see two faces face for the first time in the TAS after the accident, I mean, even THAT had more bite!) but even so, the whole thing really wasn't bad
      Anyway, just my take lol

Gary Fishback It’s more disturbing for me, because they cut away from it. Leaves more to the imagination.

    • @blueyoshikid329

+Alonzo Tompkins The main reason it was censored was because it came out a little after the Columbine shootings. People were in a tizz over the the violence in video games and movies so they edited the movie "to reduce the violence." Using that logic, they made a more disturbing death scene. Good job guys.

Joker usually laughs when he dies. A lot of people find the censored version in the return of the joker more gruesome. I agree, but no one talks about how in the uncensored version when joker gets shot he says "Thats not funny..." and doesnt even giggle. I find that sort of sad.

Anyone think the censored death of Joker in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is more disturbing than the uncensored version? Even if it didn't show him dying, his death scream made it more freaky than the simple grunt he made when he was shot in the uncensored version.

Jaeger Newman When I first saw the movie (censored) I had no idea what happened to the joker. While the actual death is definitely more gruesome. In the eyes of a child who has never seen death by electrocution, ignorance is bliss. Actually seeing Joker's body and watching Tim break down into tears could really screw with a kid's brain!

Everyone keeps saying the censored death from RotJ is more gruesome, but there’s something about Tim regaining just enough control to turn the gun on Joker and shoot him is pretty disturbing. Having him pull the trigger instead of it just being an accident feels more impactful. Plus him breaking down in tears feels more sad, he just killed someone.

honestly the one where his "son" kills him is probably the one that is the most emotional, joker doesn't laugh like he normally does or make a joke, which shows how much shock he's in from being betrayed, he tries to realise what just happened but by the time he does he's dead

It's so strange, but I feel like the censored version in Batman Beyond with Robin shoving the Joker and the Joker inadvertently electrocuting himself is so much more pressing, gruesome and oddly poetic? Maybe it's because too me, the Joker always seemed suicidal? From the comics and films I always got the sense that what Joker really wanted was to push Batman so far that Bats would "give in" and kill him because Joker couldn't for some unfathomable reason do it himself?? So to have Robin, and not just the first but the third, do it!? It's like through Tim, Jason gets his revenge and that's just one aspect that comes to mind making this situation bad. Additionally Tim is all Jokerfied, so it's like watching a young Joker kill off his predecessor, then there's the pyschological and physical struggle that goes into play, Robin's intent to inflict harm upon the Joker is stretched out, more obvious. Then if that's all not enough! If you choose to believe or consider the "possible" origin backstory from the comic, "The killing Joke" where the Joker lost his pregnant wife to the mob and his unborn child... flash to this scene, for it to BE a child made to look like his son finishing him off?! That's some dark stuff!! Plus ontop of all that! This character is a clown! Clowns pretend to fall down or do stunts that they make look like accidents in many performances, think Charlie Chaplin! So for Joker to accidentally grab onto the switch that finally ends its!? I mean it's odd but ten years later since I first saw this as a kid and I still can't get over the overall brutality of the scene and the symbolism?? I mean the uncensored version is decent but it's quick and doesn't make me think. This one ...is like ....a shock? You just don't see it coming.
