Brooo, i was there and it was amazing so all you haters and "critiques" have no idea what your talking about. The show was phenomenal soundwise. Even though they had a few mistakes in the drill, they still showed up and showed out.
Dude I see and hear SU from the band to the dancers..... isn't it a law against copycat? Ijs. Get your own style. You aren't to be embarrassed to copy someone else's style. The dancers too......not cutting them any slack neither......trying to look like something you're not.....dancing dolls!!! Smdh
Deonte Tyler that’s Bullshit and you know it! I’m going to tell you why. Most of the bands styles you see today are schools right here in New Orleans... including SU. Yes I said it. SU got their shit from high schools in the NO. Don’t care if you like my argument or not it’s the truth. TH-cam it
Is there someone who graduated from SU in their program? I'm only asking because they field show looks a lil bit inspired and it would be more understandable if there is.
JaiRoc Elly that was a genuine question meaning is it recruitment or what? Knowing band dynamics I know that the only way you get that type of increase in cymbal numbers that you are either targeting percussion or something. It's not a critique people need to stop thinking a question is an attack when it's not. Stop being defensive it doesn't have to be my band for me to be curious. Now for the record all hbcu bands are my band because I promote hbcus and everything black unlike devisive people who try to be at everybody's necks for no reason other than paranoia. So for anybody that actually has an answer for a genuine question feel free to answer.
I wondered the same thing. That is an extremely huge drumline even for that size band. Twenty snare drums and twenty cymbals is very unusual and no quad/quints. The powerhouse bands don't even roll that deep. It is what it is though. I would imagine with them being strictly a traveling show/competition band they just bulk up for sound.
Eddie Grider exactly. I must admit though the number if cymbals they have allows them to play more complex rhythms and they are heard a bit better. I do like that because often the cymbal part is a simplistic afterthought when the music is arranged for most bands.
JamesD TV you like what you like. To me it’s really embarrassing to see our young ladies graduate to be to pole dancers. Maybe that statement I just made was a little extreme.i wouldn’t like it if my daughter was out there dancing that way. Let’s go back to the copycats now pay attention to both bands and the dancers.and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Btw SU copies too! Lots of the band moves and song selection came from New Orleans schools. Not so now
alwayssmokealot there’s nothing wrong with bucking, many prefer that over the Doll style... I love the Doll style but I also love bucking cause it’s a natural drill dance and very entertaining... that was originated from the back Culture... So I appreciate the style of Dance that was created from our race.... Nevertheless, the diamonds are great dancers with a skills in jazz and bucking which makes them awesome...& Every Danceline take something from the next in my opinion...But they are great in my opinion

Ok Dega is improving!! Drilling, Dega Dancers, and some musical blemishes can use some TLC. But this wasn't a bad showing for the 1st show of the year.
"Old Head Commentary & Critique" (HU Class of '88)...Is EVERY DAMN HBCU BAND "IN THEY FEELIN'S" THIS SEASON...?! Damn...I've watch 6 different TH-cam videos and that was the dance routine for ALL 6. Did y'all have a meeting or vote on this? At least back in my day we changed it up (some MJ, some Prince, some Rick James)... Also, BAND DIRECTORS/ARRANGERS: EWF called - they want their song back (In the Stone). The LIMIT has been reached and y'all need a NEW arrangement - EWF has 100+ songs in their catalog. We should expect BETTER HBCU BAND Nation! One love!
Keep in mind this band is still young and they're being compared to some of the the GREAT band with years of experience on them, and this field show is a lot better than some of the others they performed (I saw them center on the 30 yard lines). They have an overpowering sound, they can easily blow on any band right now. But if you're gonna take the field straighten out the lines and the spacing, don't be so quick to produce a field show that you miss the little things that are so critical. Go through this thing with a fine tooth comb and leave NOTHING overlooked, stop in mid formation when you see a crooked line or something off center, call the head DM over and get him/her to fix it. One other thing, get your percussion section to back off on sound/power so you can get a better balance with your sound. Other than that, good show with lots of energy.
Just because the band program is young doesn't mean the band director recruited folks who played in a band for the first time. I'm sure they go to high schools and recruit like other programs. In addition, they come every year with somewhat of advantage over the other bands they try to compete with because they don't have a football team so they should have a lot more practice/preparation time than other bands because they don't have to create multiple shows for games. They are only being compared to Southern and not in the best way because EVERYTHING they have presented since their existence as a band has been copied mainly from SU from their dancers (who look like the sit and study video footage of SU's dancers), to the stuff they attempt on the field. Only thing not taken from SU is what their DM's try to do which seems like they studied a lot of what JSU's DMs do. They still haven't quite gotten the concept that loud does not equal good. Now I will say they are improving, but no matter how loud they play or good folks think they are, until they get their own identity as a band, they will continue to hear certain comments.
@@blkplaya9891 I never said they didn't deserve the critism - especially when it comes to SU, becoming a photocopy of a band is not a form of flattery when you try to (in this case) "out Southern" Southern - it just can't happen. I'm also not making excuses because truthfully every point you made is correct, but because they don't have a football team and to my knowledge they don't HAVE to do field shows their main focus seems like its sound (quantity over quality), and they're getting bragging rights for taking on the SWAC bands and winning. Now, because they're being prompted to do do more field shows and ACT LIKE an HBCU band on the field these little things wil be addressed - or at least they should be... We hope.
@@blkplaya9891 I just call it like I see it, I'm not a fan but truth is they been in a LOT bands asses since they hit the scene and you can't take that away from them. They needed that humbling experience SU, JSU and BCU gave them over the last 2 years.
Leave field shows to BCU this was a unbalanced mess.. Yall are loud already stop over blowing... And the Drumline is playing too loud need to focus more on keeping a groove... And lord, someone get that damn Drumline in order. 8 snares, 8 Basses, 8T-Drums and a massive 17 Cymbal Players?????? Really? I just don’t know what image this band is trying create but surely it’s just to copy other bands.
Who cares.... it’s a drill.... yes SU does it the most but multiple HBCU bands has done this drill.... this copying BS is getting out of hand... just like people are saying SU stole JSU drill which another stupid statement..
You obviously do with this passionate reply. If it weren't for the fact that the band director has had or has shown no originality since this band was created then folks wouldn't make the comments about blatant copying. The band has been in existence over the past few years and you think that by now they would be emerging into an identity of their own. Now if the director were an actual band director that came from SU, I could understand, but he was just someone who marched in the band at SU. The DMs reminded you a of JSU DMs especially when they first came out almost as if they went to DM band camp at JSU. The dancers remind you of SU's dancing dolls. The band as a whole still shows you almost everything we have already seen from SU. Until band director gets away from that, folks will continue to make the "copying" comments unfortunately. SCSU went through this same thing the first few years the legendary Mr. Eddie Ellis from Morris Brown became their band director. The difference here is SCSU had the actual band director who directed MBC so naturally he would teach his new band the philosophy he taught his former band, but after that first or second band season, he moved away from similarities of his former band. Folks eventually stopped making the comparisons of SCSU to MBC and hopefully the same will happen for Talladega.
