    Miss Beverly can tear one of those boogers up! Lol. That sycamore mandolin sounds good Mr. Jerry. I enjoy these setup (and repair) videos so much. Cant wait to see you get ahold of that Gibson gitfiddle and the mandolin especially. I learn so much from your repairs. Such valuable free knowledge you give us aspiring Luthiers and/or Techs. Thanks again Buddy!

    Seagull is a Canadian brand, acoustic side of Godin guitars along with Norman guitars Simon and Patrick and La Patrie. Seagulls go from entry to professional grade guitars, so looking at the name and declaring it a cheapie depends on the model and your wallet. They don't have big name recognition in 'Merica but do have an almost cult like following.

    I think of Mr.Rosa as a type.of man who lost his wife a few years ago and after depression and thoughts of suicide, he was encouraged to go on and as long as he keeps himself busy repairing instruments, he doesn't go to that dark place. His son and wife steered him to TH-cam to give him purpose and help with his depression until his grandkids get out of school. He needs to repair continously until the children come home as they make him feel lived and give him purpose. He had no idea this TH-cam thing would kick off so popular and it keeps him busy. That's my assessment of Mr.Rosa.

    Are antler saddles very DEER?

  • @INDYOSKARS
    @INDYOSKARS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is a reason why they use wooden saddles in dobros Jerry.
    If you put bone saddles in the tone becomes too ´liquid´.
    There are two kinds of dobros "Hawaiian dobro" and "Bluegrass
    dobro". Liquid tone works fine in Hawaiian music, it gives the
    music that sweet, mellow beautiful tone but not so much for
    Bluegrass music. Bone ´liquefies´ the tone too much hence it
    looses it´s bark and bite, it´s ´growl´ tone which is needed for all
    of those ´pull off´s´ and ´hammer on´s´.
    I often hear Lester Flatt refer to the (Bluegrass) Dobro as
    ´the old hound dog´. A dog barks, bites and growls.

    Have you tried "turning a hook" on your razor blade, for scraping? It works great and eliminates chatter.
    I'm not assuming you haven't seen this but here it is at 0:46.
    th-cam.com/video/rTVScFJoe24/w-d-xo.html
    You can also use the back square corner of a knife, a pair of scissors or whatever hard steel is available.

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I've shown that in some of my videos before. Not so much on a razor blade but on normal scrapers.

    Nice Job! But dumb question. Why did the cone have to be replaced? How do you know when it has to be replaced? Or was this an improvement or sound preference change?

    • @RosaStringWorks

      The original cone was a little bit warped and it was simply the customer's preference to replace it

  • @ResoBridge
    @ResoBridge 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Have you ever tried the aluminium cooking foil trick as a final polish for plated parts? It may only work on chrome plate, the shiny bits on Dobros are usually nickel plate. What you do is wad up a piece of aluminium foil, damp it water and then rub it over the plated surface. I haven't tried it yet myself. Probably best to try it out on something that doesn't matter first. Nickel plate is a pain, it goes dull very quickly and once it has developed a 'fogged' appearance you may never get a mirror shine back.
    What was wrong with the old cone? It looked fine in the video. Some people think that a maple saddle (sometimes with an ebony cap) is essential for proper Dobro tone. Deer antler or any kind of bone is definitely not traditional. They often do glue the two saddle pieces in. Most slide players don't seem to believe in intonation.

    Sorry for bothering, but I have an old Fender Resonator Guitar, and as long as I remember the saddle on that darn thing always moved up and down when you play around on the strings. Is that normal, and if not, should I just glue the thing in? If I remember correctly it`s even split between the upper and lower sides, so technically 2 saddles, both moving...

    In your note after examining the Tut Taylor dobro, you say it's a laminate guitar. However, when the cone is out, I see what looks like flame maple with a joint in the back on the inside - so that seems to imply a solid flame maple back, at least. What part is laminate? Sides? Top?

    The saddle may have been glued in because they tend to move and change the string position. I added an old string pin to the middle hole between the two saddle pieces to keep them from moving closer to each other on my Resonator.

    Another great video for sure Jerry you are a genius -- really! That Sam Bush model is a unique model in the Gibson line and favored by many including myself I have two of them. They are patterned after the 1937 Gibson mandolin that Sam Bush (of course!) plays. The key features are: wider nut (1 3/16"), radiused fret board (10 inch); cut off extension (Norman Blake supposedly did that to Sam's mandolin back in the late 1960s) and finally the 1930s Gibson head stock inlays. Very nice mandolins. You can tell the model year by looking at the serial number. The first and last digits are the year so for example if the serial number is: 41126060 you know it is a 2004 model -- that is 4XXXXXX0 stands for some time in '04. In addition, the information coded in the number would tell you that the mandolin was signed at the Gibson factory on November (11) 26th (26) of the year and finally that it was the sixth mandolin signed that day (06)! Now when you get to fixing the Sam Bush mandolin you can tell us how old it is!!! In summary the code is Year-month-month-day-day-number-number-year!

    I really enjoy all your videos and this was no exception. I have 2 dobro guitars that are set up to play fretted or with slide. I know that I always leave the cone and biscuit bridge loose enough to intonate/compensate the bridge angle for the harmonics on the 12th fret. One of mine has a pretty severe angle when corrected for proper intonation. (It's always a bit of a compromise) That might be worth knowing on the 'spider' type dobro as well even though it's not being fretted. The harmonics may still come into play and affect the slide positioning on the strings.

    Thank you Jerry,for another fine video presentation...Best wishes to you from here in Massachusetts. You inspired me to get back into playing my bottleneck blues. To satisfy my heart as well as my soul. It was amazing how fast my playing came back up in a very short time. I picked up a 1930s style small body parlor guitar thru a friend. As my old Yamahas truss rod froze up in dead storage....We got that guitar strings with mediums.And the parlor guitar with lights. I find I can play with a more delicate touch with the glass,slide and the brass and the socket wrench. As opposed to when I was a street singer. So that's all forward growth. And I call that good...!!! My hands don't hurt anymore. I must be living right. I think of you often and am in your circle of grateful viewers.Hope you are A- 1 feeling fine on your beautiful farm. Listening to the jam session, your mandolin sounds good and you certainly play it well (but) it doesn't even

    Does the "spider" contact the cone? Metal to metal contact, or is there some wood on the underside of the spider? I thought there was supposed to be some kind of wooden " biscuit".....
    PS, I always thought the cone was supposed to be somewhat thinner and more fragile, easy to dent if handled roughly. The original cones of the 1920s and 30s were soun on a lathe, but now most are probably stamped from sheet aluminum. Have you read Bob Brozmans' book on the history of National resophonic guitars? I can honestly say I believe it is the best coffee-table "guitar porn" you will ever see! The workmanship of the engravings is simply exquisite.

    • @glenchoitz9497
      @glenchoitz9497 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dobro's do not have the biscuit style as Nationals do...they use the spider to set the bridge, whereas a National sets the bridge directly on the cone via the wood biscuit. You can still get spun cones, most are stamped though on low to mid priced instruments and the much higher price of a spun cone reflects that. Either style does dent very easily.
