- **Pack Cell Volume (PCV)**, also known as **hematocrit (HCT)**, is a measure of the proportion of red blood cells (RBCs) in the blood. It is expressed as a percentage and provides critical information about a person's red blood cell status.
How It's Measured:
Blood is placed in a capillary tube and centrifuged.
This separates the blood into layers:
*Plasma (top layer)*
*Buffy coat (middle layer, containing white blood cells and platelets)*
**Red blood cells (bottom layer)**.
The percentage of the tube occupied by red blood cells is the PCV.
Normal Reference Ranges:
*Men:* 40-54%
*Women:* 36-48%
*Children:* 35-45%
*Newborns:* 44-64%
Clinical Significance:
1. **Increased PCV**:
Dehydration
Polycythemia vera
Chronic hypoxia (e.g., in lung disease or high altitudes)
2. **Decreased PCV**:
Anemia
Blood
in a complete blood count (CBC) test.
