- I have these three pickups loaded into my 2008 Fender Nashville Telecaster, and they are awesome! Played through a Splawn Quick Rod 100 watt head into a Splawn 2x12 cab. Recorded with a Zoom H1 Handy Recorder. Feel free to leave any questions in the comment section! If you just want to tell me I suck though, please feel free to not leave it in the comments section.

I wouldn't advise playing those sweet licks so far north of The Wall, Lord Snow.
Man, you really help people over “the tone’s life quest”, especially at the Dimarzio camp. Thx !
I was just looking for an opinion on pots for fastrack 1 and found this video with my exact setup of pickups, pushpull and all. I've never been more proud in my life. I love the way the air norton s and fastrack 1 sound together, and the tone zone is great by itself.
I don't normally like tele's with the two pickups, but your's rocks man! Love it. Love the tone's too in the amp! Rock on ! Killer stuff and great review. Thanks so much.
Air Norton in parallel mod with dirt sounds amazing! Thank you for this demo.
Great choices, Huge versatility in this set up. Thanks for taking the tome to show us this.
dude great sounds and playing man! Nice!
Great review, killer tone, and nice playing. Awesome job!
That amp is spectacular. It's beyond me what more people aren't playing Splawn's.... Just spectacular.
That was a great review, clean to dirty and the switching was very nice. I'm designing a Tele morph and your review convinced me to try the Tone Zone and Air Norton S. I might change out the Norton for something with a little more quack but this is a great place to start. Thanks again for the great demo and your playing is awesome! You remind me of a young Steve Miller!
it sounds amazing in every selection...wow!
Excellent demo Lucas, great tone and playing.
Awesome tone, man! I think this adding a middle pickup is really a big thing for more versatile tone and I absolutely agree with this decision. And of course - Tasty playing!
Thank you for this! I was going to coil tap my Tone Zone T but I'm digging the parallel sound. Great demo btw...
Excellent demo Lucas, great tone and nice playing.
Great demo, dude! Thanks and Rock On!
Excellent demo!
sweet tone, great technique and badass tele(its like jeckle and hyde) and the splawn, well it speaks for itself
awesome review and nice playing!
Excellent tones my friend. I'm having a custom loaded pickguard made as we speak loaded with tone zone t in bridge and twang King in the neck of my telecaster .
niceeee dude. i have always had a thing for teles but never got the should i need from them. the tone zone sounds killer!!!!
Great video!
Nice sounding axe, man. Great playing too!
Great tele,and great reevuu!!
wow super thorough. Thanks for sharing.
Great demo for Dimarzio pickups. They really are the best on the planet. They deliver everything from the best clean tones to the heaviest metal tones. I mean, who wants a guitar that's a one trick pony? Some upgraded pickup installation on any guitar basically allows you to play ANY type of music from jazz/blues to metal. It just proves you don't need an Ibanez, Jackson or Dean to play metal and you can also play twangy country on your tele then switch over to metal when you feel like it.
The Tone Zone T and Tone Zone S sound remarkably similar to their full-sized counterpart, and unlike the original they have ceramic rather than alnico 5 mags, which proves that there is so much more to a pickup than the magnet which a lot of players overlook. I've never been hung up on magnets. I only care about what sounds good.
Thx for the info dude. For my 2 pup mod Im leaning towards the duncan quarter pounders with a 5 way slider to tap the bridge. Its less complicated and work.
Keep rockin' bro!
Steve
Well, I'm a fan of the Splawn Quick Rod for overall warmth and tone, and with a good reverb pedal the clean channel can really shine. I also like the Mesa/Boogie Mark 5, it has an enormous amount of flexibility. The Splawn Nitro and Mesa Dual Rec are similar in tone, both voiced for heavy metal, so I'd say maybe those aren't the amps for you. The Quick Rod can get plenty of gain if you want it, but it also sounds good when dialed in for a classic rock tone.
Muy buena JON SNOW!
Awesome dude
Thanks so much
@777MADJ Well, that is a difficult question to answer. Those are all excellent amplifiers in their own way. If I had to choose an amp for versatility out of the ones you listed, I'd say the Dual Rec II. The new Dual recs have improved clean channels and re-voiced distortions, with tons of tone options. However, the Dual Rec is an aggressive sound, and probably won't sound much like the tone I'm using here, if you're into that. Hope that helps!
I can't believe how good the Air Norton S sounds in parallel! Sounds like an amazing regular single coil tele. I know this was 8 years ago, but what volume and tone pots were you using? 250k?
@mudbone80 I can't remember what the capacitor value is, but the pots are 500k. These are humbuckers, and I think they sound better with the 500k brightness. Thanks!
Great sounds thanks for sharing this. Did you choose the fast track for middle Bcs the lack of mids compared to the bridge and neck? Does it give you more clarity on the 2 and 4 positions?
I've been experimenting with the satch track and neck cruiser in neck position but not completely happy yet.
I would have thought the air Norton would have too much bottom end in the neck position but it sounds great the way you've got it balanced.
Thanks again for the vid man. Band sounds great too cheers
guitar sounds great, i liek it, nice playing also :)
Ah ok, excellent. Well man, of true, tanks you very much! Anything, I write. The true is that a want a rock amplifier, with excellent distortion, but, I not want this solely, also a good clean. Thanks you for all.
outstanding video brother I am looking at a tonezone tele pickup in the bridge of my tele and an evo humbucker in the neck,..id like to split them as you have ,..what push pull pot are you using to do that ?
Also... do you have any experience with the Chopper T? How do you think the TZ compares? Great video btw, watched it three times!
No problem! No, to do a Series/Parallel switch, you'll need an individual switch for each pickup.
Man this is one of the best demos I've seen for these pickups! I think I'm going to do something very similar, except maybe put a Cruiser Bridge in the neck. By the way, what are the values for the tone pots and capacitor?
Like yo hair, bro! Sick Tele.
Its pretty similar. It is thin like a single coil, but it doesn't have quite as much twang as a normal tele bridge pup.
did you attend the berklee summer sessions back in the late 90s, early 2000s? I feel like I might've been in an ensemble with you there back then
you totally DO NOT suck Lucas...rock on! -T.V. ;)
how did you manage to find a pick guard which will fit the air norton s on the neck?
SPLAWN ALL THE WAY!!
padawan007 Really! I never actually heard one, and now I see they're versatile and rich-sounding. Ain't we got it good in life?
Hi Lucas,
I was wondering if thats an ash body and if its heavy. Im looking to do my '04 lite ash tele (mik). Im looking at the tone zone but I wonder if it will be to overpowering to the lite ash body. The body is ultra light. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you.
What's the name of your band again? what kind of music do you play? Just wondering? Thanks man.
Sounds great! Have you tried the chopper T?
Hey, I got a late 80s BC Rich STIII Platinum series that I wanna put an Air Norton S in the neck, Fast Track 1 in middle and pair them with a Lace DeathBucker in the bridge. Looking to be able to cover the spectrum from hard rock/metal to classic rock/blues, and anything in between. In your opinion, how would the Air Norton S and Fast Track 1 hold up with a hot pickup like the Deathbucker??
Hi, are you using 250k or 500k pots in this guitar?
I'm fairly sure mine is ash, judging from the airy tone and wood grain. My guitar isn't ultra light, I'd say it weighs 6.5 pounds(ish)? The Tone Zone was perfect for me because the guitar already has a natural brightness from the ash body and maple neck, and because my favorite amps are naturally pretty bright. I also think it has enough output to do the humbucker sound if you want it, but in parallel mode, it sounds close enough to a single coil to get the job done. I highly recommend it.
wow this video was very progressive in every sense
seems fast track pretty interesting
How close is the parallel wired Tone Zone to the factory Tele bridge SC? It sounds a little thinner sounding to me, but it's hard to tell not hearing it in person.
you said that you had a special pick guard made,... did you make the pick guard yourself or did you order a special pickguard? Also did you have make any modifications to the body of the guitar?
Hey man, I'll be picking up a Ash tele soon, and I plan on getting a new bridge pick up for, and I'm looking for something heavier sounding that I can get a "djent" sound out of, but will still sound like a tele, any ideas?
hi, i have a stupid question, i can't find the air norton dimarzio pickup neck for the telecaster only the stratocaster model, do you think the air norton S will fit on the telecaster neck?
+asr 01 oh i just heard what you said on the begin of the video, well ok i guess it will work for me then cause i won't install any pick guard on my tele, its a new body.
Awesome playing and demo! Are you using 250k pots or 500k pots?
500k pots in this one.
so u have tone zone in bridge air norton on mid and fast track on neck? (what about dimarzio pro track on neck is better than fast track?)
@jaredmkl Well, I'd have to say getting a "djent" sound and also sounding like a Tele is sort of impossible. That being said, you could do something like I did, getting a rails humbucker and then have a switch to go into parallel(or single coil) mode. That won't be exactly like a traditional Tele, but it would get you in the ballpark. I think the Tone Zone in this guitar sounds great for heavy stuff.
Why do i see people put their airnorton S in the neck position? the bridge is louder and brighter right? ideal for leads i thought.
Which speaker are in the Cab? Thanks.. Guy
Thinking about replacing my chopper t and cruiser neck with tone zone t and air norton s. I have mesa mark v and searching for closer to Petrucci sound. Will it work to me?
Because I had search about milli Volts of those pickups, difference is big. Is that means that TZ and Air Norton S are closer to full size humbuckers?
What brand and gage strings are you using?
500k, since these are all humbuckers and I wanted to keep the top end in the tone.
Nice pick attack a bit like Gary Moore whom you resemble quite a bit.
Billy Corgan NC1 in Neck BC2 Bridge
I miss that guitar :(
Awesome. Friend, I have a question about of amplifiers. I know that you had or you have a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier and that you have this, the Splawn. Know? I search a amplifier, but, I not know which choose. I have in my head 4 amplifiers:
-Mesa Boogie Stilleto Deuce II
-Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier II
-Splawn Nitro
-Egnater Armageddon.
I search a versatile amplifier with good clean y excellent distorsion. I have 2000$ USD to buy a good amplifier of high quality. What you recommend me?
dark tones my friend
You should have shown the Fast Track in parallel and series.
250 or 500k pots?
Always Ernie Balls, but I can't remember if these were 10's or 11's.
Ok, well, I not like a amplifier to play metal or trash, nothing of that. I want an amp with heavy distortion, not extremely heavy. I want an amp to play of all a bit. Which brands and models you recommend me? More or less as a 10top.
Even if I was, my statement is still true!
Sorry it upset you Timothy...welcome to the 95%.
Real nice playing but I would have liked it if you had done with the clean tone, all of what you did with the dirty tone.
Ernie ball regular slinky, I use super slinky btw
@TheDancingSaxophone nah I'll only be in drop c
This is a mexican model, and it is translucent cream. Its hard to see in this lighting, but I'm 99% sure this is ash.

Your pinky looks like it wants nothing to do with your hand when you're playing the guitar. xD
this time no matter what pickups you play -- its your amp and fingers - shurely pickups help some nuancies
Marek Tokarcik They really do make the last bit of difference. I struggled with a few wonky wiring mods and added switches to get my humbuckers to sound like single coils, and I was working from the wrong end of the problem. It's easier to get a Tele to sound like a bucker, and still sound like a Tele, too!
Funny...you defenderized your fender. I like the sounds your new guitar puts out;and if i were playing just another blues rock bands sound;or my own;that would be awesome. Butif you were trying to copy a certain artist fender owners sound;that might not be the thing to do to it? Just a thought my friend. Great guitar playing man.
Jesse Reyna Still has some fender twang to it.
Sometimes you like the instrument but just want a few more options tone wise. I use a USA strat with full size dimarzio humbuckers and series / single switching. It's a surprisingly versatile guitar. Achieves both fender and gibson tones. This Telecaster sounds GREAT to my ear. It's got the gibson and fender bases covered :)
Adam Taylor Cool man. The sounds are pretty cool. Been playing a while haven't ya? Nice.
Jesse Reyna I don't know, but this seems to cover a lot of different sounds, even some of the Jimmy Page "dark" tones. It also sounded as authentic as a stock Tele, and it's trippin' me out big-time on those 2 & 4 positions. He didn't even bother to monkey with the tone knob, and the amp settings never got tweaked besides going from one channel to another. I'm actually envious, and now I'm lusting after that setup for my own Tele. Can I have your permission to use the word, "defenderized"? I think that rocks, bud! I think with a little tone tweaking , you could find sounds on this setup very close to what a lot of famous players use. I could hear Clapton, Page, Van Halen, Stevie Ray, Angus, Jimi, Chet, Don Rich, Roy Nichols, Roy Clark, Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton, and even Wes Montgomery.
He didn't even bother to do things like picking up north by the neck pickup while using the bridge pickup, or vicey versey, etc. So I think there's lotsa sounds in there that weren't even explored in the video. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say that if I listened in a blind test, I'd think he had a whole arsenal of different guitars. For every sound he came up with, he could have rolled the tone knob halfway down and started over. The only things it can't do in it's present state of wiring is to play both the neck and bridge without the middle pickup, play all three pickups at once, or play any of them in single-coil mode. Would I miss that? I'm not entirely sure.... Look at it this way. How could you mod out a Les Paul, A Strat or a 335 to get all those sounds, and still sound like a bone-stock Tele when you want to? I think I'm gonna crap my pants....
krelbar Especially if you're good and stoned!! Just kidding, ha ha!! I heard REAL Tele sounds.
Are you related to Tuck Andres
L smith Ha ha, yeah, I was waiting for Patty to come in with cookies!
If you say that when you switch to the clean channel using a Strat the sound just disappears then you must be using some pretty bad strats with pretty shitty pick ups...'m saying this because I've been a strat player for almost 30 years and I've always used a lot of drive and when I switch to clean that didn't happen to me. Make sure you have a good strat with good pick ups and set the level of pedals to unity gain or if you're using the drive channel EQ it with the clean and you'll have no problem.
David Rodriguez Well davey...I don't know if you wrote "hum bucket" due to lack of attention or simply because you're an idiot, but the reason I present this question is because you seperated "Hum" from "Bucket" whatever that is it's wrong it's actually Humbucker...And now onto the question at hand which is that single coil pick ups have less output than humbuckers...really??? No kidding? Do they? Duh! The dude is not at all clear in his explanation and neither are you because since he is unclear in his explanation I'd have reason to call him an idiot (or maybe not) but then you come along and make it even less clear and that definitively makes you a fucking idiot. Point one - Yes single coils have less output than humbuckers but if you're using a single coil tele or strat I've no idea why the cleans would disappear because you set your amp to taste....BUT.....if you're using a guitar with humbuckers that have split coils so you can toggle between humbucker and single coil on the clean channel yes your cleans will almost disappear in single coil mode because you've initially set the amp to taste on humbucker mode....But ...if you split the coils and then set your amp to taste on the clean channel when you tap the push/pull pot into humbucker mode you'll have an increase in volume on the clean channel...POINT >Being the kid didn't know how to explain himself and you proved that if anyone here is an idiot it's you. Thank you and fuck off.
Lets be nice guys!
Lucas Fowler I am nice...you can never serve two masters, hence there will always be those who love you and those who hate you...never has any man been in a situation where this is NOT his reality. have a good one, Mike.
Nice playing, nice tone.
If you took away blues box scale shape I'm convinced 90% of guitar players couldn't solo. If that comment upsets you, then your in the 95%.
...what
Sounds like you are making excuses for your self.
