  • The seperewa is a harp-lute that has a long tradition amongst the Akan. Few musicians still play it today but it is taught at the University of Ghana and Winneba College by Osei Kwame Korankye.
I undertook this project of building a seperewa while teaching at the University of Ghana's Department of Music in 2018 and 2019. The instrument construction was undertaken by myself, drum maker Alpha, and and carpenter Kwame in Accra. Special thanks to Pittsburgh artist James Simon for the maple necks.
The new instruments are played here by Osei Korankye and his daughter Abena Serwaa: "ɛmmere nyina nsɛ".

Always fascinating to see craftsmen at work on a musical instrument, and especially when it comes from a different musical tradition.
