4 years in university with Japanese profile. I can read kanji pretty good and understand most of the words, however can’t understand the complete sentence at all. The grammar we are learning is mostly formal one taken from newspapers. So when it comes to informal texts or speech it feels like different language
Its natural for who learns a new language, my japanese is like when i try speak English when i was in school, since i just learn it and less practice with native speakers,got struggling to speak is a natural thing 😂
Reminded me of the time, years ago, my family asked me to double check with the bus driver if this bus was going to the right location when we were in Japan. I haven’t talked or practiced Japanese vocally with anyone aside from school settings in Japanese class, so I completely blanked out and started to doubt everything i learned. I felt so much shame not being able to do something so simple that i refused to do it. 😭 We did eventually have a family friend (who doesn’t know japanese) ask for us, but that was a nerve wracking experience for me. Especially because my whole family was overestimating how much vocabulary i knew and expected me to speak it as fluently as english (despite me telling them i don’t have good memory and a tiny vocabulary due to it). They did kind of griped about my inability for a bit which made me very… upset but well… i’m doing better now, not ペラペラ but im getting there 😅
I’ve been learning Japanese since few years by now, I’m not fluent at all but i’m but near N3, and I wonder why all the foreigners learning Japanese I have encountered have troubles in speaking but NOT in understanding whereas I got no issues to speak normally or quickly (even when my sentences are weird/wrong 🌝) but I struggle so badly to understand japanese people? 😭
you need to do more listening practice if you struggle with keeping up with what they say. If you just miss words in their sentences then you should do more vocabulary studying.
Maybe you don't understand grammar enough? I got this problem too so i go and read, as reading means you have to understand whole sentences, not just concept while hearing. Also while reading you can just stop and think about sentence, ask chatGPT to explain or something. Listening is not very efficient in understanding grammar.

7月から会話アプリを始めた時から日本語を話すことがかなりできるようになりました。
まだ弱いところは沢山ありますが、毎日電話していた人が今は私の彼女になってこれからもっと上手くになると思いますー！
前はただアニメとかで見ていた表現を思い出して始めましたが、彼女になった今は自分が勉強しないと相手の言葉を理解することができないのでそれが理由となって努力しています。
日本語は思ったより話すこと自体は韓国語より簡単ですが漢字の読み方がめちゃ難しいと思います。
