Honestly it’s refreshing to see a higher quality digital watch with a modern/futuristic/simple design. I’m all for intricate and flashy watches but seeing something like this is really refreshing. I’d love to see one with a black case/band or maybe different colors for the LED’s

@@StopFear I think every industry goes down that road every so often. Look at the Ford Thunderbird from a decade ago, for example. Remember when the fashion designers tried bringing bell-bottoms back? I count 4 watch companies bringing back their LED watches. Nixon might be new to the LED watch trend, but that makes 5 companies bringing something out for the analog challenged and LCD averse.

I own this watch and I find it brilliant. It's interesting that all haters in youtube comments are people who have no experience with the watch. I don't find it overpriced, although I agree the bracelet could be better (unless it's intentional to stay true to the 70s original) but otherwise I find it excellent value for money and I do not regret the purchase for a second. It's obviously a style statement, not a practical watch, so those who compare it to Casio digitals are completely missing the point, and therefore not for everyone, but if it's your thing, it's worth every cent.

I lived through the development of all of the digital technologies, and there is no comparison to LCD displays. There are many currently popular Casio models that I will immediately reject because of 1980's LCD displays

I would recommend getting the Seiko Ripley chronograph reissue instead..... Both watch and car are designed by giorgetto giugiaro. So full disclosure I have one of these watches. Why did I buy it? Well it’s build quality is very good, solid, heavy and feels good on the wrist, much better than the Casio’s you’ve shown on the video. It’s design is spot on - retro, modern, futuristic past. It’s so Star Trek! In building my watch collection I want quality pieces, something with uniqueness, does what it should do well, something that stands out, and at the same time is affordable. This holds its place in my collection. If it wasn’t for lockdown I think it would draw more comments than many watches, which is great as it’s always nice to engage in a horological chat!

Hey Ben. My uncle was the original inventor of the LED watch, so it's really cool to see continued interest in this design.
Check out the Armitron Griffy LED for some (really) cheap thrills. It's not technically a true LED segment watch like this one. Rather, it is an LCD with a red LED backlight. Regardless, for the money, it's a fun unique twist on a niche retro product and nothing else looks quite like it.

At this price point, I would have expected automatic activation as well, though that's difficult to fit in the power budget. Maybe an arrangement of liquid metal switches (like mercury switches of the past, but made with a safe eutectic gallium alloy) or a single shake switch to provide processor wake-up, and then accelerometer to decide whether the processor goes back to sleep or powers on the display. That's a ton of engineering work but then that would differentiate it from a cheap toy.

But i do have a hairy wrist and the price is a bit too high, specially for a watch that is not a daily wear, rather a "special occasion" thing. I like the design although I do wonder if it would be readable in daylight and if I recall that was one of the biggest issues with LED displays when I was at school in the 70s when a couple of the other kids had them. The Hamilton although arguably silly money compared to the Yema is readable in all lights with that hybrid LCD and OLED layout. I guess it's a personal thing. At the moment I don't think this Yema is for me. Great review though Ben.

As simple as this watch is it does look like a lot of fun. Yema may be a great brand but I don't think this watch merits such a high price tag. Still, you gave a great review of this little watch.

Hi Ben, I’m interrested to know what you think of companies like DIY watch club? If you ever get a chance to colab I’d love to see a video on it. It looks like a great gift idea, and I’ve been so tempted a few times.

A bit smaller and a tad more readable, and I'd get one.
Also, Ben needw to clean the watches a bit more thoroughly before macros :)

I think people are overreacting about the price. The case and band, module and display, are all made in France. The Bulova Computron reissue is pretty much the same price and it's entirely made in China.

a good example of doing a good job at a unique design, and not buffing it up by trying it to do everything. if i was production designer on some sci-fi film i would order some of these for the cast lol
