If memory serves, the thicker front sight on the M1903, as well as the relatively large protective hood for it, are USMC match rifle modifications--something about the wider blade being better matched to the targets used in CMP/National Matches style competition. A friend's M1903 has the same, extremely narrow, front sight blade as my 03A3.
@@dsar9489 You are correct sir, the #10 sight system was intended for combat use as the sight picture was more rapidly attained. It performed poorly on the range and the #6 sights (narrow) were retained for match rifles.

That seems very poorly reasoned.... A thicker front sight is the total opposite of what one needs for target work.
