- This is a demo reel of 4K timelapses, panoramas, and landscape astrophotography that I’ve taken over the past couple of years. Lots of bulb ramping for sunset, moon, Milky Way, and sunrise sequences.

fun fact you can tell what continent this footage was taken on by how that moon is rising, its moving to the right therefore they are inside of the circle path of the sun. if the moon was rising going to the left, the observer is in australia or south america, somewhere outside the circle.

the reason has to do with a certain amount of practicality and desire to get things done within a reasonable timeframe... such as for example the lifespan of the participants involved lmao...
and therefore a sort of flexibility applied to mathematical calculations that acts in opposition to an attitude of hyper-exactitude may be required to get things done while simultaneously watching paint dry... therefore in some sense it also has to do with unreasonable definitions of what constitutes a "lie" in applied mathematics :)
a safer, broader, definition of the word "lie" should take into account the desire to deceive others... a desire to deceive detected by a very well-verified and well-established trail of evidence I should add hehe... for if you define a "lie" as simply being mathematically wrong, then you are setting yourself up to accuse the entire world of being constant pathological liars lmao...
schizophrenia, hell, and numerous flimsy conspiracy theories might possibly all be lurking somewhere down that road... maybe perhaps... at least I think this was the very painful road partially explored by Kurt Godel and other less well known associates of Albert Einstein... I don't know this for sure, but I kinda suspect it... so I caution you to be very careful when assuming that somebody might be lying! :)
to be on safer footing it is good to look not just for mathematical errors but try to see if you detect an actual INTENT to deceive... thus the broader safer definition of "lie" marries the presence of mathematical errors with an intent to deceive... even that is probably not the safest definition of "lie"... but hey at least its a start on the journey to greater realms of sanity!
let me see if I can explain with an analogy :)
suppose you have a nine year old daughter that you love dearly... one morning she calls you on your cellphone while you are in your study cheering on the stock market's current ticker tendencies with glee and euphoria... "daddy, can you bring two cups of milk up to my room so that I may eat my cinnamon bun?" she asks you
"why certainly honey cakes! I will be right up!" you reply
and so you measure out two cups of milk into a glass and bring the glass up to your daughter
as you are placing the glass on her desk you notice that your daughter has worked out the atomic weight of milk, using her crayons, on the back of an envelope containing a credit card offer you recently received from CitiBank
her scribbled writings constitute a long series of formulae and calculations... you also notice that she has derived Euler's number by hand on another nearby piece of paper!
"well golly gee willikers!" you think to yourself
then she places the glass of milk on a nearby scale... her eyes narrow as the scale indicates the weight... she yells out "but daddddddyyyyyyyyyyyy.... this is 2.2874 cups of milk! I asked you for two cups! hmphh!!!"
your left eyebrow arches up in an expression of skepticism co-mingled with incredulity!
"my my my how my daughter has grown intellectually!" you think to yourself
"ahem I'm sorry dear let me fix that for you", you reply... and you head back downstairs with the glass of milk
once you are back in the kitchen you are truly dumbfounded and perplexed on how to proceed... you vaguely recall that she said there were 2.2something something cups of milk was it??
"hmmm... if I could just scoop out a little bit of milk with this spoon here" you think... an action which you perform...
you head back upstairs with the modified glass of milk
your daughter weighs it again and this time she furrows her nose in disgust "omg dadddyyyyy!!!! this is like so totally 1.9983783 cups of milk!! why don't you form an L with your thumb and forefinger and hold it up to your forehead!! please daddy I thought you said you would never lie to me!!!"
you blush slightly and find yourself thinking along two slightly divergent lines of thought... on the one hand you are kind of amazed at your daughter's amazing allegiance to accuracy... and yet you also feel very alarmed in some hard to define way... somehow your daughter's behaviour seems extremely unreasonable...
technically she is being very accurate and "rational"... and yet, you cannot shake an intuitive feeling in your bones that there is something profoundly unreasonable about her demands and even more so about how she is interpreting causality and human motives in a kind of dark and twisted way!
but somehow you summon the courage to trudge on... "my bad pumpkin kitty pants, let me fix that for you!" you say as you head back down to the kitchen with the glass of milk lmao
for the next three years this keeps up... with you getting more and more skilled at measuring milk subtractions and additions... at some point you even buy a miniature ultra-professional centrifuge for $5000... and a little later you master x-ray diffraction imaging using a machine that ran you around $70,000!
one glorious day your daughter replies that you have finally managed to bring her exactly two cups of milk as she originally asked you to do!
you are ecstatic at finally being able to fulfill her oh so simple request!
however, you are also devastated when you sit down and examine the cost it required... you are many tens of thousands of dollars in debt... two months into the three year milk request your wife asked for a divorce, citing sexual frustration haha... your golfing buddies gave up inviting you out to the country club long ago as well... heck, even the cat left the house over a year ago with an angry meow! :)
you wonder to yourself whether your daughter could have instead used an approximate equation instead of calculating exactly how many atoms of milk she required in a suspended liquid lattice lmao... perhaps you would have avoided so many expensive costs and still had a valid membership at the country club had she used an approximation instead??
with trembling hands you pour a glass of milk for yourself, grab a bag of chocolate chip cookies, and try not to think about it... then you head up to your daughter's room to see how she is enjoying her cinnamon bun
you find to your surprise that she hasn't even touched the cinnamon bun... instead she is focusing intently on scribbling out a very complex differential equation on the backs of several envelopes of yours... you recognize them as credit card overtures made to you many years ago!
"whatcha doin vanilla shortcake??" you ask, straining to understand the equation she is writing
she seems not to hear you as she continues solving the equation
"oh poo!" she suddenly exclaims as she angrily slams down her crayon... she goes on to explain to you that she has just adjusted her original milk equation to more accurately account for the gravitational perturbations caused to the sensitive weight scale on her desk by the planet Jupiter as described by Einstein's equations of General Relativity... when you plug in the planet's current relative position in the sky that is...
as it turns out, according to the much more accurate equations, the glass of milk that she cleared with you as finally being 2 cups is actually just a tiny tiny bit short of 2 cups!
you cannot believe what you are hearing and you faint from exhaustion and mental shock!
when you awake you find that you are in a hospital bed... a doctor explains that you have experienced a stroke and that you should try to get some rest... the doctor leaves the room and you close your eyes with a sigh and wonder to yourself how everything got so bad lmao
you see sir, the trouble is that the mathematical equations that more accurately model reality are quite complicated :)
on a very regular basis, NASA, ESA, JAXA, ISRO, CNSA, the US Air Force, and hell all sorts of other organizations that concern themselves with aerodynamics will use far more simple equations that merely approximate some atmospheric situation or other
NASA and others know very well that the equations are not exact out to 18 decimal places lol... this is not a mystery to them in any way at all... and they are just fine with less accurate models because almost all of the time such tiny miniscule effects as represented by more accurate aerodynamic equations can be totally ignored... most of the time they are incredibly tiny perturbations you could say
it is also not totally unheard of for NASA to work with a PI that is 3.14159265 instead of 3.1415926535897932384626433832795
now, would you say they are "lying" when they approximate PI like that? :)

they use such approximations because they don't want to spend years calculating the more exact solutions to field equations and stuff... they want to get stuff done you see... they have to answer to a Congressional budget office sometimes! haha
so yes indeed, your eyes are not deceiving you in any way... some years ago, NASA @ Dryden internally published an aerodynamic model of Earth that totally ignored its very real curvature and modelled it as a totally flat plane... not only did the equation ignore the curvature, it also ignored mountains and valleys on the surface of the Earth and stuff!
now, just because this one approximation they briefly leaned on in the 1980s or whatever didn't account for mountains and valleys either, you wouldn't say that mountains don't exist, would you? lmao

How do you create the time lapses where the milky way is visible? Do you need a camera with a bigger lens?
A wider lens certainly helps. Most of that was shot at 14mm f/2.8 or 24mm f/2.8 on a full frame camera. You can use longer focal lengths like 35mm or 50mm, but your shutter speeds are going to get very short and the exposure will be dim if you want sharp stars without trailing, unless you use a tracker to cancel out earth's rotation. Trackers don't work well for timelapse though as then the ground gets blurry from moving the camera during the exposure. So wide angle lenses are definitely an advantage for timelapses of the Milky Way.
And all this is going on whilst I snooze ... What a visual pleasure .... Very nice work! One question, how is it that it's 4K and shot with Nikon?
+Bill Peterson Galleries Timelapse videos are created from still frames, and usually long exposures at night. With a 36MP Nikon D810 that's almost 8K when the still frames are rendered into a video. 50K or more when it is from panoramas. A 16MP D700 is a little over 4K in resolution. I originally got into timelapses because my D70 and D700 cameras had no live video capability. :-)

+Aaron Priest .... Well to stick my toe in I picked up one of the little Sony RX10 MKII bridge cameras. I've only begun to play with the 4K but have been messing about with the slo-mo. Forgive me if I'm amazed at what you can get out of one of these little guys. It's not quite the cost of an L class lens and super light compared to the Canon bag and at that considered a bit pricey in it's category ... how far we've come so far in toys for us boys. I confess that it's becoming my tote around choice for shots of opportunity and only occasionally to I wish I had the 16 lb bag instead. So Merry self Santa to me.

Hi Aaron. Love your time lapses! I wanna know, how do you control the transition from your exposures for the night sky to your exposures for the day sky?
I use a number of hardware/software tools for exposure ramping, depending on the scene and what I'm interfacing with (slider, panning head, etc.). The most common tools used today (in order of preference by most people) are DslrDashboard, the View, Ramper Pro, and Promote Control. Each tool has a different subset of features of course, but DslrDashboard is the probably the cheapest/easiest method to start out with.
Dawn is the hardest to ramp, quite a bit more challenging than dusk. ;-)
did you make this time-lapse footage from photos or from videos ?
Hi Eyas, all of the timelapse footage is a series of still frames played back faster (many of them long exposures at night), none of it is sped up video if that's what you were asking? Some of the panorama footage is from animating 360 panos with a virtual camera inside the sphere.

Nah, not upset at all! I get about 5-10 requests a day from people to use my work for free. That doesn't support my business or family though and I usually have to decline unless it's for a really good cause that I'm supporting, as that retains the value of my labor. Work that I've already exclusively licensed for a time period, or was work for hire for a client, can't be used elsewhere either, and most of this video is a demo reel of actual paying work. That's all! ;-)

That's star trails for a whole night over a campfire and tents in my back field with the kids. ;-) I let the timelapse frames cumulate when stacking so they just keep growing.

How do you do the video of long exposure? So stars move and have tails?
Which video segment are you referring to? 2:51 and 2:56 with the star trails? That's done through stacking several individual frames. You can let them accumulate to form rings, or let them fade out after x frames to get comet trails.
Aaron Priest yes that is the spot ! That is so awesome I have a canon sl2 would it work on that camera?
I don't think you'd want to go over ISO 1600 with the Canon 200D / SL2. But you could certainly do star trails with it since you aren't concerned with as high an ISO to limit your shutter speed for sharp stars. You can use ISO 800 and 1 to 2 minute exposures with an external intervalometer and shoot for 2 to 4 hours to get lots of frames. You could also shoot on a moonlit night for lower ISO and fewer stars (which looks cleaner for star trails anyway, less clutter), but you'd probably want to do it during a quarter to half moon instead of a full moon, depending how many stars you want to capture. Try all three moon phases and see what you like best!

I'll tell you better if I want to make a panorama timelapse like in your video ie that the camera in place to stand still turns horizontally I should take a photo every few seconds to make it fluid? thank you
If I understand your question, you have a few options:
1) You can shoot a timelapse and pan the camera with a robotic rig like the eMotimo Spectrum.
2) You can shoot a static 360 panorama with a single camera and stitch it into a sphere, then animate a virtual camera through the scene in After Effects or other software (some scenes in this video were rendered with that method from a single image).
3) You can shoot a 360 video with a multi-camera array, but that is the most complex and expensive route.
I have used all these methods to put a camera on a timer made for these timelapse running while the camera takes a picture every tot seconds and it works all right apart for the fact that when I then use after effect to create timelapse This does not get very fluid as in your case and I do not know what is due
It might be that you moved too far a distance in too short an amount of time in After Effects, or had too low a frame rate to get smooth movement without judder. I went with 30fps instead of 24fps on this video for that reason.

2:48 The sun is still visible in the middle of the night. THE EARTH IS FLAT
That's actually a 21.6% moon setting. It was just about at astronomic dusk with the sun 17.75° below the horizon. With a long 30 second exposure for the Milky Way, the moon is overexposed and looks like sunset through the clouds. :-)

Oh, you are probably looking at the VLF transmitter site that the Navy uses to communicate with submarines in the Atlantic. There are several towers and they give off quite a bit of light pollution in a long exposure. could u see the stuff at 1:00 with naked eye? I've been to the exact spot but never stayed the night.
You might not see all the stars appeared at 1:00, but you can see the bright ones (you need a clear sky and areas that have low light pollution). This is due to our eye can't accumulate those lights from the stars but cameras can. Hence, fainter stars look brighter in a picture. Also, you need to use averted vision to observe the faint stars. If you're interested in stargazing, plan yourself a trip to secluded areas (that are far from city - low light pollution), invite your friends, and you might have a chance to observe the Milky Way!
I know about that light pollution eye structure indirect sight thing, but I only asked because I was once at the exact mountain from which you filmed that part before. It was just mid day that I was there.
Since the author could film it (not me who filmed it), so I think you could see some bright ones if you stayed for the night. And I was just telling you extra info :) peace
The scene at 1:00 is Bar Harbor viewed from near the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, Maine. You could easily see the stars with the naked eye, especially the Big Dipper. The camera picked up more stars with long exposures of course. The northern lights were too washed out by the town's lights to see with the naked eye, but we knew the forecast said there was potential for aurora and and we could see it on the camera previews. :-)

Sure, you need a stitching program that supports batching, like PTGui. I've done it for 360 timelapses. You create a template from one set and use the batch builder to apply it to the rest.
