Yep, it's Ableton but he doesn't use many of the sounds from it, he samples himself and sometimes other people's music. I love what he does when he plays live, you always get a unique version of the sound. That's a rare thing with electronic music!
That MPC freestyle at the beginning told me i was in for a treat. Even though some of the edits are a little sloppy, he is still one of the best producers I know.
I don't see why people have a problem with producers performing like this, most musicians want to play live and for people like Gold Panda, Star Slinger et al using technology is the easiest way. Their still talented
@ShortTermEternity If you want to follow the exact build of the track, you could always DJ? As for this performance, I'm a Gold Panda fan, I love his music, I'm not arsed if anybody knows some dude who can play an MPC with his tongue whilst scratching a turntable with his elbows. He looks like he's playing at the back of a hairdressers, I just buzz off any footage of this guy. even if it's just him pressing play and then striking some buttons. GOLD PANDA RAWKS MAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!
@pressove I've listened to some of the other stuff of that album. I don't hate it, but I'm not completely blown away by it either. Just kind of indifferent.
@ShortTermEternity This is a TV performance, I don't think you can judge Gold Panda on this alone or by what you've read. I mean, it could be interesting to hear what he'd do with a live band but that isn't really his forte. When I go to gigs/clubs, I tend to listen and dance and enjoy myself. I don't really care whether or not they're really putting themselves out, it depends on the band I suppose. I produce a lot of music myself so I'm not ignorant of his methods but, ultimately, I don't care!
No, I think its more about what instruments you are familiar with and what your capabilities are there. Its not that hes lacking creative power or equipment necessarily but rather the ability to incorporate actual instruments or make use of things like a monome that can make it more interesting. Like shigeto for example jams somethin out on the drums and then samples that live and throws it into his set.
@lkman4 But if he's putting the whole song together on an MPC, I don't see why Live needs to come into play at all. The only thing I see him doing with Live that he maybe wouldn't be able to do with an MPC would be some of the filter sweeps, but those could be just as easily sampled back into the MPC rather than re-loading the whole damn song into Live. Hell, even hooking up 2 or 3 mini Kaoss pads would be cheaper than a Live license. Or, fuck it, maybe he just really likes how MPC pads feel.
@ShortTermEternity I thought you were talking about the 'Gold Panda' buzz, not this video in particular! There's a fine line between playing live and DJ'ing these days, I think people get too heated about it though (They wear their chins down with vigorous stroking at gigs, when they should just dance.. or go somewhere else!). I agree, if you're familiar with Ableton, this video isn't particularly fascinating. I'd prefer a nice promo video, maybe with some attractive RnB honeys booty shaking! x
I was wondering the same thing. Why have the latency of using Live when you have the MPC-1000 already? I honestly thing it's just so he can run everything through live's effects and sync all his other drum machines to Live's clock. I agree he'd be better off triggering that vocal sample straight off the mpc and running the audio through Live, but whatever haha
@@DJKuroh No latency with Live if you know how to set it up. If you use individual track outs on MPC into Live via mixer you can have custom effects chains on each channel. Very powerful.
@mouthbreather1 I guess he might use it for producing as well as live performances. Dude, you should totally listen to his album "Lucky Shiner". This live performance might be a bit underwhelming compared to listening to the album which I think is on par with Four Tet's latest.
So disappointing your playing Wednesday @ Mutek... won't make it until Friday..... please stay around for Piknic Elctronic it's an open mix of Mutek artists. Inquire about it --- you'd make alot people happy. Of course if you plan on staying in town that is :)
let's get real right quick. when you are performing/creating electronic music live, more times than not, the limits are set not by your creative power but your equipment. it is possible he's poor?
well not to be an ass hole but he is kinda just pressing and playing the song. Yet he has it mapped up to where he can play int with call button. Its fucking impressive as hell.
I really love most of his stuff, particularly this song, but I didn't think it was great performance. Maybe he was hungover from touring or something because I'm sure he must know his shit off by heart.
...what? Why the hell is he using an MPC as a CONTROLLER? If he's just triggering samples in Live, there's absolutely no point in paying $1k on a MIDI controller; an MPD could do the same thing for 1/3rd of the price. Also, the music's a little "meh."
Brilliant producer, needs some work performing live. Saw him yesterday, and sadly, his performance is pretty much the same even a year later. Poor impromptu drum looping, awkward timing with the filters, and every transition was about 2-3 times faster than the original tempo with space echo. It was pretty disappointing considering this guy is already a proven producer.
Sierra Cain Most dj's (also some other artists) do it when they perform live, also look at the faces of guitarists when they play the guitar, ofc it's not necessary but it's just their way of being immersed in the music
I've been listening to this since university a decade ago. Still hits the same. Genius
Same.. cheers!
Criminally underrated dude ❤️
3:33 i just love the normal pitch voice sample he uses in this performance! should be in the studio version too!
wow throwback to being 9 years old watching this on loop
Deadass
Did u find this on pandora?
@@Cristianjl1615 no, why?

GENIUS~

@mouthbreather1 Might we be priviledged enough to hear some of your compositions? Just so we know how it should be done
What does he have to the right of his MPC?
@pressove I've listened to some of the other stuff of that album. I don't hate it, but I'm not completely blown away by it either. Just kind of indifferent.
what equiptment is he using

@lkman4 All I see coming out of the back is 1 MIDI cable.

this is making me want to get a drum machine
where do you find this version?
Download it off the video
Why's he using an mpc and ableton? Isn't the point of an mpc that it's standalone?
