    Your second point reminds me of a maxim that I try to run my games with: shoot the monk.

    One of the first time's I ever DM'nd my own campaign I ended up pulling a deus ex machina on my party because I felt like I had made this first combat encounter to hard for them and didn't want to put them in a tpk on the 3rd session. After words one of my player came to me in a private DM to talk to me about it and express his concern that I wasn't giving the party enough agency, and instead of trying to argue against him I just took his criticism into account and apologized for something that I could recognize was my bad. If your player's aren't having fun, they wont come back next session and then you don't even have a game. Listen to there feedback so that you can make it as fun as possible for everyone because that's what dnd is supposed to be, a fun game to play with your family friends or whoever. Don't be an ass-hole fellow TTRPG GM's

    The Psionic Encounters, and the Psionic Encounters Table found in the 1e DMG. This may be why psionic powers didn't make its way into any of tye 2e core rulebooks. It may also be a reason no player wants to play a healer.

    Great video, and I agree with all the DM advice here. I would suggest that you either remove the subtitles or make sure they're correct. They were a bit distracting throughout the video, especially when they didn't match your actual words.

      Fair criticism, only so many hours in the day. Normally I spend more time on them.

    Ok so I am first time Dm with a first timer Party (except one person who as a little bit of Experience). So I Gave my party in the first 3 sessions a lot of "Help" like giving them info they re not supposed to have Making sure the monsters won't attack the Sorcerer with 9hp etc. I mostly did that because I was not confident enough to be sure that I can create a ballanced fight and I definetly don't regret doing so... My first fight was borringly Easy my second one was cool and the third one was a Big mess... To much enemies, To much allies that fight different Enemies so on so on. I learned a lot thanks to that and Now I think I know how to do a Good fight. So I ended what I called the Tutorial... meaning No restrictions on the players actions anymore. It worked out well, Until they dicovered a Goblin cave... and Although I asked them three times if they wanna prepare anything, they Just walked up to it, so they all died, But since I knew smth like that would happen In the future, I previously granted them Some Revive Item with 3 charges (they only had one left after the tutorial, cause some Idiot decided to throw a Stone at the BBEG and another one died through bad luck). So yh they survived and Hopefully learned their lesson and they also really wanna go back to the Cave and kill all the goblins.

      That was an awesome read. I was going to do a video on it, but the reality is there is much there and I like everything you did. New, new, new players can create problems I forget about.

    What about one shots? It seems like you need to "railroad" a bit more to find an end? It has to make a story doesn't it?

    • @theGMGuide
      @theGMGuide  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes and no. One shots are an agreement ahead of time of "this is what we are doing."

      @@theGMGuide this. I never had any issues with railroading cause i just soft spoil a few important bits that i feel they should know for the campagin right in that session 0 pre characte creation. e.g. going to play savage tide and i gave them the advice that they arent going to stay in this town forever, that they are gonna be on a boat for quite a while, that they are gonna need to bring some combat savy chars and that there is gonna be a relevant part of the story where precision damage wont be able to shine aswell as giving them a rough breakdown of what kind of baseline their characters persona needs to bring so they can work with the idea of the module. Ofcourse, i might lose a bit of the surprise factor at times, or they might deduce info from that, but i trust my players and i want to value all our time, so id feel bad having them run into such situations that might leave the character they create out of his depth unintentionally. unintentionally because i still wont force them to pick something else, and i am gonna make amends so the situations are resolveable, but i wont remove or change core aspects of the story since when im playing or leading a module, its neither just about our group nor just about the campaigns story, but both deserve to be explored as intended. So instead im gonna include some sidequests and stories along the way.
      Also there is the soft railroading where you can make them easily feel like what is happening is mostly based on their agency.
      Railroading is pretty much only then a noticeable problem, if you violate their agency to their face by pushing it hard, deciding they arent allowed to make a choice, not to be confused with making the consequences of their actions clear/hinting at it like shown with the foreshadowing example.
      Also not tp be confused with not allowing them to roll for certain things, especially if you play with the houserules about crits for skillchecks etc. They are still allowed to DO whatever they intend, but the result wont change
