I try to be an AEW fan. I really want them to succeed, but man they make it difficult. You touched on every point I have been thinking about lately. Tony needs to step down from creative and let someone else run the booking while he stays as the owner. Until that happens, nothing will change.
Just like the old timers said about AEW fans after their last episode. "There is no type of person more off-putting than the arrogant nerd." Tony Khan panders to that demographic and has driven everyone else away.
One point you missed is the fanbase. The AEW fanbase likes to act as gatekeepers what good pro wrestling is, that kind of behaviour chases people away, and I, for one, do not want to be associated with that stuff.
I’m an invested fan of both promotions and I see that attitude from both groups of single-company fans all the time. As someone who’s excited about AEW & WWE simultaneously, I’m often left feeling like I’m on an island because for months now, the vocal fans I see seem to only be fans of just one or the other, and never both. and both fanbases call the other one all sorts of unsavory names and both suggest the other “has brain damage” all the time simply for enjoying one or the other. It sucks to be a fan of anything online but for some things it really sucks.
@@jjukkyumiz agree with you there it is pathetic it does suck I invest in both other companies too sick of being insulted because I watch enjoy more than one wrestling company
Wrestling on both sides have that toxic behavior. You have the pro AEW cheerleaders like you mention then you have the other side that thinks AEW and all modern wrestling is bad and it needs to be like how it was in 1985 (the Cornette crowd who also think there gatekeepers of wrestling) Both sides and there non stop sniping is a major turnout and tribalism is a cancer in wrestling fandom. You can criticize a promotion (I’ve done that plenty with AEW and WWE) and not OBSESS over it all day every day. Some of these people really need to get a life
@@bradleyminoski2020 well said these people need to get a life badly the toxic behaviour needs to stop tribalism is so dumb WWE and AEW has its problems despite what any ratings may say
Yeah, this is a major point of contention with me too. I want wrestling to succeed, regardless of company, but with some of those folks, anything less than 105% passion for AEW and *only* AEW means you hate "actual wrestling"
You should see the fan-captured footage of Tony Khan begging fans on stage and on the mic to stay and watch ROH after AEW had two back to back shows in one night, Dynamite and Battle of the Belts.
@ivegasliveentertainmentinc4698 This is Khan's problem though, the booking of the shows. They do too many shows and too many tapings. In my opinion, if you can't do a Live show then don't do one at all.
AEW went from catering to the online fan who was underserved to slowly catering to hyper online fan who can watch 5+ hours a week and read everything online.
They dont give me an incentive to watch bc tony overhypes everhthing without really building it up. He needs help fast. I really don't want aew to fail bc i like having an alternative to watch but man how many times can aew shoot themselves in the foot before it's too late
To me, the biggest problem with AEW is that it's hard to build someone, when everyone goes 15 minutes in a competitive match and eeks out a win over a guy who's been presented as nothing special. The main event guys need decisive wins over guys lower on the card. Otherwise, you get a bunch of guys with no real credibility. Another thing is exactly what you said: guys, come in and get pushed for 2 or 3 months. Then Tony gets a new toy and forgets about the guy he was pushing.
This is my biggest problem. Every match doesn't have to be a "banger". Sometimes let the star beat the hell out of a jobber in 5 minutes, ONE finisher and done.
The matches themselves aren't the problem, it's the lack of storytelling to build up the matches. It's just like; "Here's two random wrestlers on the roster and they're really mad at each other because of...... (looks around, shrugs).... reasons." Also, Tony seems to think that putting two wrestlers in several matches constitutes a storyline.
All these long competitive matches do is diminish your star. There need to be clear levels between jobbers, mid card, and the main eventers/stars. If everyone is at the level of a main eventer....no one is.
@@coolcebollahe said irl, literally the entire roster is full of cocky people *irl*. Like Jack Perry, Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson, Chris Jericho, and many more.
Your point about wrestlers just disappearing was spot on. They have the roster, but seem completely lost on how to handle it. Too many decisions that leave you scratching your head.
One issue you address is not wanting AEW to die because WWE won't have competition. Well, AEW has also caused a major problem with independent wrestling. The Young Bucks were made EVPs and they flooded the company with PWG monkeys. This pushed the indies even further into the territory of only these types of clowns getting booked. Independent wrestling is almost exclusively weirdo comedy wrestling now. Then you also have the issue of AEW bleeding NJPW dry of their entire main event roster, when NJPW is supposed to be their partner. Not to mention what Khan did to ROH after ROH covered the production of the original All In.
@@Dingledangle1983 Not at that time. They had just sold out Madison Square Garden with over 10k fans and helped Cody & friends with the production for All In.
Even with AEW in full swing, WWE STILL doesn't have any competition. AEW was never in competition with WWE (except in Tony's mind). The NFL is greater competition to WWE than AEW will ever be.
AEW's biggest problem is Tony Khan. The CM Punk/Jack Perry video makes the promotion look bush league. AEW needs to take a page out of WWE and act like no other promotion exists. AEW needs and a proper booker/story teller that has long term vision for the stories they tell. I think even Bret Hart offered AEW help and AEW said no. Who the hell says no to The Hitman?!
Bret offered help, did 1 appearance and stopped answering the phone to tony kahn... and nobody took notice that a man that has been bitter towards wwe for 25 years didnt want to help their opposition
I wouldn’t say WWE acts like no other promotion exists. They’ve repeatedly referenced New Japan, the Mexican circuits, and even TNA recently when Jordynne Grace participated in the Women’s Royal Rumble. The difference is that WWE isn’t letting other promotions live rent-free in their heads and they aren’t taking pot shots at them every chance they get.
There's a Chinese proverb that says, "the fish rots at the head." Meaning that bad leadership will ruin a company/organization. Tony Khan is the problem.
As a wrestling fan you have explained AEW’s problem perfectly, WWE basically is looking in the rear view mirror right now and eventually WWE will be competing against themselves because AEW is leaderless right now and they are just trying to stay relevant at this point.
@@Bls-of1ldmeltzer. He was never booker of the year, he is a mark wrestling fan whose rich dad was able to give him wrestling action figures to play with
Dude needs to have a committee. He can be part of it if he insists but there should be people who know how to finish angles properly and get more people involved (like Wardlow, for example)
As an AEW fan, you hit the nail on the head. They used to have a lot of good that overshadowed their flaws, and now their good is diminishing and is being overshadowed by their glaring flaws. Tony Khan needs to step aside and let somebody else handle creative, because what he's doing, is not working
AEWs problem is Tony Khan. It starts and ends with him. The other major issue they deal with is the battle between former WWE talent, who fans are already familiar with against lesser known "indy" talent. The home grown AEW talent isn't very well known outside of AEW, and that makes it hard for new fans to get behind then, no matter how good they are.
I went back and looked at early AEW back in 2019-2020 and it's like an entirely different promotion. The crowds are way louder and invested in what's going on. The promos and storylines are deeper and much more engaging. The matches matter more too.
@@Bls-of1ld Exactly they turn their backs on cody he wanted to make Aew more mainstream if Tony khan listen to him just imagine how they would've have stayed as a competition to the wwe.
@@MoesAk47 Cody Rhodes truly had an old school wrestling mindset. He wanted AEW to be like the old NWA and JCP-era WCW with engaging feuds and storylines. Too bad Tony Khan is friends with the Young Bucks...
Tony is just the rich friend to all the wrestlers on tht roster and he’s spending mega loot to try to make everyone happy so they can wrestle they’re friends and he’s(tony) such a mark tht he lets everyone disrespect him and give him shitty advice to better there own position and last he’s not a real boss… the GMs on raw and smackdown are more believable than tony being the boss Tony’s just the paycheck
5 things that hurt AEW - 1) The Pandemic since AEW wasn't even a full year around when it hit 2) Tony Kahn buying ROH and trying to shoehorn most of it into AEW programing while paywalling the ROH weekly shows instead of having them on TV or even youtube 3) Cody leaving and becoming a huge star in WWE 4) Vince getting kicked out of WWE and everything turned over to HHH 5) Everything with CM Punk including AEW signing him in first place, all the backstsge bickering/scuffles and him going back to WWE
Cody never did get the belt. That was his big stipulation where he lost against Jericho and could never challenge for the belt again. I think the biggest issue is when they bought ROH. Instead of using the talent and the archive footage, they diluded AEW by having two promotions now with its own set of belts.
@@davidcoombsbestmegadethalb9780 The WWE World Heavyweight/Universal Championship says he is. Headlining 3 WrestleManias in 2 years says he is, main eventing last year and back to back Royal Rumble Winner says it too. The Rock is one of if not the biggest star in wrestling history. Reigns is in the same position that Cena,Rock,Stone Cold,Hogan,Michales and few others. With all that the fans chose Cody. They were gonna go with Rock vrs Reigns and with Vince gone they listened to what the fans wanted.if that doesn’t make him the biggest star in wrestling I don’t know what could.
The wrestlers I think have been carrying AEW are Christian Cage, MJF and Adam Cole. It just sucks Adam Cole couldn't stay healthy with his injuries and I know he hasn't appeared as often. There some many other talented aew wrestlers I could've mentioned as well.
It feels like at the start AEW came in while WWE was making bad choices and Vince was being his later old man self and AEW was fresh and new but over the last few years WWE has cooked what in my opinion is their best story ever told and it had multiple chapters that made you want to come back and it was true long form storytelling. AEW to me has relied way to heavy over the years on work/shoot stuff to create stories and it is part of what causes all the drama behind the scenes but also has made some of their most compelling tv. Without the real life drama behind the scenes in their own company they look lost
I agree 100% The backstage footage was the final straw for me. On top of the fact that a Vince free WWE has really been amazing. AEW worked when Vince was giving us babyface Roman vs Brock for the 417th time. AEW or more specifically, Tony Khan is a good matchmaker as far as giving us big dream matches. However he sucks at using talent properly week in and week out. Too much use of blood and hardcore matches ( they dont seem special anymore ). Weak or non existent storylines, too much goofy $hit, too little selling and too much leg slapping. Showing the main event star you fired, choke some respect into Jungle Dork was pathetic but I loved watching AEW clown itself. All they managed to do is make Punk look honest and like a savage, and that is gonna translate to more ratings for the upcoming Punk/Drew feud. I am glad WWE can use AEW as another developmental territory and retirement stop for its older talent before they come back to get inducted in the hall of fame and a legends contract.
At the risk of being contrarian and sounding like a hater, I simply do not get the hype around Mercedes. Good worker, certainly. Exciting match potential. THE ABSOLUTE WORST thing that could have happened is bringing her in a month early and then letting her talk for several weeks, like this, if you want to get her over. It’s been absolutely excruciating to see. It’s not her strong suit, and maybe this gets her better, but she’s mumbly-stumbling all over her words and not making any sense. She called Willow a horse totally on accident the other day 😂
You're right that AEW isn't lacking on talent, but the bad talent they do have really hurt the good talent. The Lucha Bros were my favorite wrestlers before AEW. Those matches they had with The Bucks were HORRIBLE and the same goes for FTR vs Bucks.
Just found this channel. One kf the coolest breakdowns ive seen. You arent tearing them apart or kicking them while they're down. You're giving your opinion while also offering suggestions on how it could improve. I also like how you lead into your next point. You have a new sub
Its not that they dont sell hard cam side its that they cant... they sell 2000 tickets those people need to be camera facing or they may aswell go back to dailys place with zero fans it would look just as empty in 10k arena
They need to cancel ROH and Rampage . And just have two shows . Bring the ROH title belts on Collision . I think that will be better. And then clean house by getting rid of the likes of Rusev and Lana to cut down expenditure .
I’m hoping AEW turns it around. I was noticing Botchamania having more AEW than WWE - that’s not good. When I went to the last AEW show in my area, I paid more for those tickets than I did for Smackdown, and I had better seats at Smackdown. Both were on the floor but I was closer to the ring at Smackdown.
One thing bully Ray said is “the boys can’t manage the boys” makin the bucks EVPs put a conflict of interest I feel like that’s probably what Cody felt too in his time there . Only 1 thing to do now …. #VinceisAllElite 😂
Go back to AEW Fight for the Fallen. Tony Kahn is going an interview with Tony Schiavone and he stops the interview to talk about a possible Relationship between WWE and NJPW and Kahn is like nervously laughing, and he’s like sweating and he looks so awkward talking about it he genuinely looked terrified and at that moment I knew he was gonna ruin his own company
ive always rooted for AEW because we legitimately need them to keep WWE on their toes and because they were so good and have such good talent but this whole Punk saga was handled so incredibly poor. its very clear that keeping everyone happy and paying everyone a ton of money was the priority over actually establishing stars that can pack arenas and feuds that can sell PPV's. Kenny and the Bucks in a feud with Punk and FTR was literally right there for them and tony chose to forgo a proper business decision just to save his own ass because he cant stand up for himself and control his locker
AEW has the talent and the opportunity to put them in captivating storylines to make you want to tune in every week. MJF vs Punk was not only the best rivalry AEW ever had, but one of the best in modern professional wrestling period. Tony celebrating the ratings bump by putting over someone in another company is a joke. Bischoff/Russo would've never done that. Also, why are they not promoting the fact that Brian Danielson is in the middle of his farewell tour? He'd be rivaling Cody's popularity right now if he was doing it in the wwe.
Miro is injured, said so himself. Aew never said punk was lying. Until the footage, they kept quiet until punk opened his mouth. In fact, they said the incident was overblown. It wasn't about punk being right or wrong. The rest i more or less agree.
AEW’s bad booking and storyline decisions are being compounded by WWE’s “new era” without Vince’s direction and their outstanding storylines. Triple H is a genius and Stephanie is a leader. They are creating a culture where the locker room is united very well.
I want aew to succeed like alot of people but constantly taking shots at wwe on a weekly basis will never work, history shows that fact just look at tna and how well it worked out for WCW. Alot of the wrestling TH-camrs had a problem with triple h making the ospreay comments as if aew has never done anything like that is hilarious to me.
I liked AEW when it started and WWE was god awful under Vince McMahon getting their all time low ratings. WWE is great right now though and on fire. AEW is pretty cold right now and the crowds show it. I was interested in Jay White hearing about him njpw and bullet club and he’s been booked horribly so far.
It got so bad, They making PowerPoint presentations💀 All facts though. People like jim cornette, Eric bishoff, dutch mantell are all trying to give advice. Meanwhile, his "friends" the young bucks are using tony. Not to mention the actual backstage fights. Andrade vs Sammy, thunder rosa vs Britt Baker.
Tony: “we’re not going to make the same mistakes that WCW made.” Literally the first thing he did was sign wrestlers to executive leadership roles where they would have control over aspects of the product and get to call their own shots.
Honestly, Tony needs to stop hiring in-ring talent, and start building a creative team that handles all the storylines and booking decisions from scratch. Also, MJF needs to come back ASAP and get back his title. He had something great with Adam Cole, but the minute he left, it all fell apart.
AEW doesn’t even try to suspend my disbelief. I know it’s a work, don’t remind me every single second. Also there’s no storytelling, 2 wrestlers having a match is not a story. Theres angles, like i don’t like you, you don’t like me, I’ll see you on rampage. Other than that there’s nothing other than the matches. There’s no build to anything. Which is why I don’t watch any more
I went to 2 wrestling shows this month. Both at small venues, both sold out. Both had more people than the thumbnail. Action Andretti and Brian Cage were the main at one wnd the other was just local guys, K Toomer and Mean Mike. Both were fantastic. Cage should be main eventing AEW right now. He's insane. Built like Brock, but he wrestles like Rey. Action is tiny, but he can get it. You could absolutely push him in a Cruiserweight division. Mike, an ASWF and MCW staple, should be in a major fed. AEW has everything needed to succeed. Its all on Tony.
Im only 5 mins in, and Im glad youve been hitting every concern Ive had. Including watching Dynamite, qne in my case attending 6 9f their shows, but now only watching on YT. I saw them make so many errors even back then. Like When Darby was FIRST hot and was using the whole relentless thing, and immediately Jericho made him tap on a PPV I believe. Like, What? You could have banked on Darby really being relentless and not tapping out. He could have passes put from the pain of being in the walls, and both would have looked good. Y2J would still have got the win, and Darby come out good and relentless, if done right. Just a bubch of small things....now it's glaring stuff.
AEW used to have stories when they started out. Hell there was even the Cutler v Avalon booked on Dark in the early days where Cutler couldnt win a match and him and Avalon had a banger on dark to break his losing streak. Now it's all just garbo matches that happen just because. Hadnt watched wrestling in years and did the same as you watched early on but once you started figuring out who was winning it no longer became a fun watch and it has slowly went down hill. Cody also screwed Cody by trying to be a tweener and booking himself into a corner plus that feud with one of his guys really soured everyone because of his rah rah USA speech. Guy just needed a change of scenery because the cody-verse was going too far. Khan is literally just fantasy booking matches at this point.
Lets just say the last few times ive sat down to watch Dynamite, ive changed the channel to OVW Primetime instead. "SHOUTGUN TONYGUN!" is the funniest thing ive ever heard.
I AEW got lucky that the WWE was pure garbage when they started. They had a few hot years and just coasted bc WWE was so bad. But for 5 years its been the same thing over and over. 20 minute meaningless matches, 5 run ins a show, 20 titles, and everyone is in a faction. When WWE has a match that has several close 2 counts and multply finishers kicked out of its bc it is a important match. AEW does it literally every match. A top guy shouldnt go 20 minutes in a near falls match with a lower card guy. WWE is on fire now and AEW has no answer to turn their ship around.
interesting thoughts about CM/McIntryre and Damien priest. That was a little confusing What confused me was the Rey Mysterio tag match win at mania He's team cheated by outside interference by those football players and everyone cheered It seem really strange for the face to go over with interference
The problem with AEW is you don't have the same wrestlers performing every week. Here is a perfect example of what I'm talking about... when AEW first started I didn't like Orange Cassidy. Didn't like his gimmick or his wrestling. But, this dude was on tv every single week wrestling and his commitment to being on tv every week grew on me. Im a big fan of Orange Cassidy now. Going back to my point, that is AEW's biggest problem. The wrestlers are there for a month and then he/she is gone for a couple months. There is no continuity in the wrestlers tv appearances. You can't push a wrestler if they are there for a month or two. AEW need to start pushing wrestlers that are willing to put in the time and work. So when CM Punk stated that some of these wrestlers in AEW only want to work one day a week, kind of makes sense now. Also AEW destroys itself with their decisions. Their best heel group is Bullet Club Gold and they band together with The Acclaimed, a baby face team. The story was they both got attacked by the masked men during MJFs title reign and they would ban together to go after thise guys, who are The Undisputed. Weeks pass and no retaliation from them against The Undisputed. So the storyline dies as well as their partnership. So you took your biggest heel faction that had a lot of heat, made them into babyfaces for a month just to turn them back into heels. But now Bullet Club Gold has lost all the heat they had. Decisions like this destroys your product and viewership. AEW just doesnt follow through, maybe because they dont know from week to week what wrestlers are going to be there. Well they need to change their booking and start promoting and doing feuds with wrestlers that will be there every single week for at least 6 months. AEW has other issues but this post is long enough. I still love AEW but they need to get it together soon.
I love watching your wrestling videos. I would love to see you do a weekly breakdown of shows/matches in WWE and listen to your thoughts on them. You do a fantastic job on here and THG!
Agree with most of your points. THE main problem at AEW is the talent utilization and goofy booking. Along with this to me is the cheap indie looking jobbers they bring in (men and women). A lot of them look so bad it drags the whole show down. WWE squashes jobbers too but at least they have real ring attire and some level of competency. Love the AEW women's div. even though it's a HOT steaming mess, they have real talent but the booking is killing it. Last on the Jade Cargill thing--looking at her matches, I think right now she HAS to be with a group of other women; her last 4 televised outings were very short and very same-y, felt like the exact same moves in the same order and they aren't complicated. Without the other girls to do the actual match, she can...squash Chelsea Green? They just need to get her more training. Maxine Dupri looked way better last night in her outing so here's to hoping for Jade.
In the beginning of AEW I gave it a shot---as a fan of Memphis Wrestling back in the days of the King (long live the King) as well as WWF/WWE, and WCW the opening was there for AEW to capture a core audience as well as casual fans and I'm afraid without wholesale change at the top it's going to be left to how long Tony wants to financially support AEW and pour money into it AND really how long talent want to work in that kind of environment. Tony had good intentions obviously but it's not working with him in charge and directing the creative. It's painfully hard to watch and where WWE beats AEW is that there are stories that are being told in the company right now that have elevated the product. WWE now has a legit mentally and creatively stable person in charge and they have by legal reasons removed what was a big detriment to their product (Vince) and HHH is energizing a now "hot" product--we'll see where it goes from here but early signs are that fans have responded positively. Let's be honest all WWE fans probably have would expected Vince's lifeless body drug out of WWE headquarters before he'd ever quit working---horrible and out of touch as he was with all creative and business decisions with WWE (which heck yeah the last decade or so it was laughably bad creative for WWE). I'm a fan too but Tony needs to step back and take a hands off approach and just hire people to take charge for the viability of the business. Wrestling is entertaining the fans but it's also about growing a brand and making money for the talent and AEW is stuck in an "indy" mindset. It's not all "matchups" and you versus you---it's a bigger picture...look how they handled Cody---perfect example and hell Cody STARTED AEW.
Aew like WCW always had better in ring work however AEW needs a new booker. After so long with the same roster you WILL get burnt out on ideas. The Continental Crown tournament would have been a good idea if the winner got a trophy & a world title shot at there biggest ppv, but making it for another random title was stupid. Less titles Tony not more
Aew ruins every “monster” they have. Miro, wardlow, powerhouse Hobbs, the Murderhawk monster. Every one can destroy jobbers in squash matches but once they’re against someone real they’re in 20 minute long matches where they either barely squeak out a win or lose.
In the glory days, wrestlers booked the matches and promos were ad-libbed. Now everything is written as a TV show. WWF died when it became a publicly traded company.
Watched it day one until about last November. Never missed a single episode, nowadays I can’t seem to get myself interested to even put it on in the background. Very sad the downfall it’s had, wwe is so hot and it’s really shining how bad aew has been. I think the evp stuff has ruined the show as much as it has to do with TK and his booking the last year. I’ve seen enough “dream matches” I need some drama, storylines and better production and professionalism. I hope it resurges this summer, but I’m afraid it’s not likely
What is really the difference between Tony Khan's All Elite Wrestling (to include Ring of Honor) and Leonard Asper's (through Anthem Sports and Entertainment) Total Nonstop Action [TNA] Wrestling??? Both Tony Khan and Leonard Asper are billionaires. The only thing is that Leonard Asper, through his company Anthem Sports and Entertainment owns the AXS TV network channel and not at the mercy of Warner Brothers Discovery, like Tony Khan. Also, Leonard Asper already know that he is NOT a booker, as he has a competent staff of Anthem Sports and Entertainment and TNA Wrestling executives and producers to do that. Tony Khan on the other hand has experienced personnel at All Elite Wrestling and Ring of Honor to do the booking, but Tony Khan does way too much himself, and he soots himself in foot with booking and creative blunders. Leonard Asper is very cost conscious when it comes to TNA Wrestling, while Tony Khan throws money at talent and somewhat overpay talent at AEW & ROH.
If AEW is more concerned with just the wrestling and less with the storylines, they can at least prepare video packages that tell the viewer why the match they're about to see is important, why it's happening, or why I should care about either of these wrestlers....this is pretty much the formula UFC uses, video package telling you about the 2 fighters before the fight, and the commentary team selling the fighter as they make their entrance, so even as a casual UFC viewer I'm caught up to what's going on and can pick a fighter to root for.
Chris Jerico isn't as useful as a vet as before because: - when younger talent fueds with him (MJF, Sammy, Hook etc). They don't come out of that fued for the better and it actually hurts them more so than it helps. Probably because the segments vs Chris are not that great. - recent allegations have hurt Chris's rep a lot than ever Tony NEEDS to take a back seat and let someone similar to Triple H's position who understands how to book good storylines, fueds, etc Get rid of the EVP status! Wrestlers should never be in charge/ over see other wrestlers. Only Tony. Have actual safety rules for wrestling so the wrestlers have longer careers in AEW and aren't trying to literally harm themselves (like the glass situation)
While I find AEW unwatchable right now, I don't want them to go out of business either. I want Tony to grow up and and find himself an experienced booker who can make the company more competitive. Since the beginning, it's felt like the wrestlers have way too much control and influence over their booking. It's one thing to come up with your own promos based on the booking decisions and another for your boss to think they're running WCW in 1996 and you're Hulk/Hollywood Hogan. Kayfabe is difficult with the internet, but not impossible. Tony's biggest mistake was having press conferences with fake journalists after PPVs, basically destroying all the heat and excitement generated by the event. We were promised "sports-based wrestling" and we got WWE light with the worst of ECW sprinkled in.
Tony Khan learing he can buy pretty much anything he wants, but he can't buy experience. He needs to bring in someone or multiple people to see how booking is done. Sit under the learning tree. There's a reason we don't see NHL owners make themselves the GM, or the coach....
Everything you said here is well said, inherently or evidently truthful, and very well presented. I don't know who you are and what your wrestling experience is, but you are spot on my friend.
See you have a great take on this, you're a fan but you recognize the problems. I am a fan of AEW also and I have talked to many fans who just think there's nothing wrong and that everything is perfect in AEW. They view anyone who has anything negative to say about AEW as a WWE troll.
I agree with 99.99%. I think they have a little bit more in the women’s division with Toni, and they’re push Julia right now but if Mone goes after her belt she may get Wardlow’d.
Hold on a damn second, how do you have time to keep up with wrestling while also being the hockey guy? And why am I just finding out my favorite hockey TH-camr does wrestling content!
AEW had the right to respond. How was CM Punk telling the truth? I saw 1. Perry standing and Punk approached Perry (Punk could have just moved on and did his thing). 2. Perry stepped to the side followed by Punk, cutting him off. 3. Punk SHOVED Perry 4. Punk choked Perry 5. Samoa Joe and backstage workers broke things up. 6. Punk lunged towards a corner that was blocked off so we don't see who was behind that wall. The shoves and choke were enough to fire anyone regardless of job, but Punk tried to make it sound like he was a girl scout and was politely asking questions. The video shows him as the aggressor.
The key thing: the muted audio. You cannot hear what they are saying. Locker room scuffles happen all the time in the history of wrestling. If Perry said what Punk said he said, he had every right to do what he did. If Perry said “do something about it” to the company’s biggest star, what exactly is the expected response?
You clearly do not know anything about the history of wrestling if you think nothing like this has ever happened backstage. Joe himself said it was relatively tame. Tony, the guy who had no experience doing anything like this before, was the only scared little girl afraid for his life
@@robotfox1987 I get the scuffles happen and in the past those stories came out years after the fact. Don't criticize AEW for not dropping it, Punk keeps pushing it so if people are going to be critical be critical towards both. But Punk trashing on AEW, gives Tony Khan and AEW the right to share their side of the story.
Nice Bruins collectoon going on the backround! Also, agree on AEW. I hope it turns it around but they would need to diminish Tony's role, and that will never happen. (In my opinion).
I personally feel that hangman page's workers rights promo on cm punk was the start of a large portion of problems with aew
That was just the problem bubbling up to the surface. It had been there all along.

and both fanbases call the other one all sorts of unsavory names and both suggest the other “has brain damage” all the time simply for enjoying one or the other.
You have the pro AEW cheerleaders like you mention then you have the other side that thinks AEW and all modern wrestling is bad and it needs to be like how it was in 1985 (the Cornette crowd who also think there gatekeepers of wrestling)
Both sides and there non stop sniping is a major turnout and tribalism is a cancer in wrestling fandom.
I legit lost all sympathy for AEW after the CM Punk footage release.
You should see the fan-captured footage of Tony Khan begging fans on stage and on the mic to stay and watch ROH after AEW had two back to back shows in one night, Dynamite and Battle of the Belts.
@@ivegasliveentertainmentinc4698 Fans doenst want ROH to be like a Dark show.
@@ivegasliveentertainmentinc4698wow that sounds pathetic
I lost respect for AEW when Tony did NOTHING about his EVPs and others sabotaging CM Punk's run with the company.
@ivegasliveentertainmentinc4698
This is Khan's problem though, the booking of the shows. They do too many shows and too many tapings. In my opinion, if you can't do a Live show then don't do one at all.
AEW went from catering to the online fan who was underserved to slowly catering to hyper online fan who can watch 5+ hours a week and read everything online.
Tony books to get Dave Meltzers approval - not booking to make money. Punk summed him up during his Helwani interview
"What are you talking about?! There were TWO four-star+ matches on Dynamite last week! THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS!"
That mentality is what killed it.
"Dream matches"..with zero build to see who is the" best wrestler" often not including the world champion who should be considered best
Lmao, I can watch good wreslting matches MANY places.....AEW not a product for weekly television....
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@user-rx2hw8up2j yup dream matches with no promos
100%. That, and there are no 'moments'. Nothing feels special. There feels like there is absolutely no emotion involved in the product
The matches themselves aren't the problem, it's the lack of storytelling to build up the matches. It's just like; "Here's two random wrestlers on the roster and they're really mad at each other because of...... (looks around, shrugs).... reasons."
Also, Tony seems to think that putting two wrestlers in several matches constitutes a storyline.
All these long competitive matches do is diminish your star. There need to be clear levels between jobbers, mid card, and the main eventers/stars. If everyone is at the level of a main eventer....no one is.
@@Gravey_draws fully agree. It's hard to get excited about anyone when everyone is on a similar level
I think the lack of kayfabe killed AEW as well. Hard to like a wrestler when they are preachy and cocky irl.

Good points.
Roh was already downspiraling.
Indy wrestling is kinda falling apart for exactly this. It's either Pizza Guys or guys with Pizza Cutters.
They cant do that when they bring titles and other stars from 3 other promotions on thier show.lol
I did some thinking; maybe Tony let the "Booker of the Year" award go to his head and get him to think that he can do no wrong.
Booker of the year according to who?
*YES*
Punk said it during the MMA Hour, AEW books to for star ratings.
Or Cagematch ratings, whatever that is.
For Meltzer, For Cagematch, and for the Internet Smarks.
AEW's problem is the same as what plagued TNA; A money-mark boss who has no business doing anything but signing the checks.
This is so true, company full of idiots who don't know how to book. It's insane
Agreed with all of this. I loved AEW but Tony Khan has made it unbearable.
I really want to love AEW, but it's so hard to find enough redeeming qualities. But the bad outweighs the good in so many ways.
The CM Punk footage stuff was jumping the shark. Genuinely embarrassing thing to do as a business
It’s almost a low as WCW giving away Raws results when Mankind won the title
I went back and looked at early AEW back in 2019-2020 and it's like an entirely different promotion. The crowds are way louder and invested in what's going on. The promos and storylines are deeper and much more engaging. The matches matter more too.
Thx to Cody Rhodes

I would really like to know what AEW wrestlers say about TK behind his back.
You made intelligent, helpful great points, Tony Khan will not hire you.
@imjustsomecanadianguyandis184 That would be genius
Remember one of Cody’s last times in AEW when a fan threw his weight belt back at him?He left and is the biggest star in the world.

The wrestlers I think have been carrying AEW are Christian Cage, MJF and Adam Cole. It just sucks Adam Cole couldn't stay healthy with his injuries and I know he hasn't appeared as often. There some many other talented aew wrestlers I could've mentioned as well.
He can't stay healthy because those bones aren't cushioned by any muscle
It feels like at the start AEW came in while WWE was making bad choices and Vince was being his later old man self and AEW was fresh and new but over the last few years WWE has cooked what in my opinion is their best story ever told and it had multiple chapters that made you want to come back and it was true long form storytelling. AEW to me has relied way to heavy over the years on work/shoot stuff to create stories and it is part of what causes all the drama behind the scenes but also has made some of their most compelling tv. Without the real life drama behind the scenes in their own company they look lost
I agree 100%
The backstage footage was the final straw for me.
Exactly, instead, they're building towards a CM Punk vs Jungle Boy match and Will Ospreay vs Triple H match which will both never happen.

There really are people out there that think AEW purposefully doesn't sell tickets to the hard cam side 😂😂
Don't they even move the audience into it sometimes, pretty sure I've heard that
Its not that they dont sell hard cam side its that they cant... they sell 2000 tickets those people need to be camera facing or they may aswell go back to dailys place with zero fans it would look just as empty in 10k arena
This is a lot of truth to drop on Rusev Day!!
Do they really need THREE television shows AND RoH? WWE could barely handle two shows for years.
@StormyDomainand he’s saying it’s too much, I agree
Their five year streak of Disappoint is one of the most impressive cumulative achievements in wrestling history
They dedicated two weeks in a row to someone who doesn’t even work for them no more truly a clown show.
Watching my favorite hockey youtuber talk about wrestling, what a time to be alive
WWE is not great right now
It got so bad, They making PowerPoint presentations💀
All facts though. People like jim cornette, Eric bishoff, dutch mantell are all trying to give advice. Meanwhile, his "friends" the young bucks are using tony. Not to mention the actual backstage fights. Andrade vs Sammy, thunder rosa vs Britt Baker.
As a life long WWF/E guy, I am fully rooting for AEW to turn things around. Competition is great for the on screen product and great for the fans.
Tony: “we’re not going to make the same mistakes that WCW made.”
Literally the first thing he did was sign wrestlers to executive leadership roles where they would have control over aspects of the product and get to call their own shots.
Which is why I don’t watch any more
ECW has better angles and they were most definitely wrestling and skill before story and I’ve seen amazing storylines in WWE, ECW, TNA, even WCW
You're good at this. Keep making videos!
Finally a video about AEW that has a comments section, with rational and calm wrestling fans!
Damn I used to watch your hockey vids years ago, good to see you’re still killing it
AEW used to have stories when they started out.
That was a little confusing
What confused me was the Rey Mysterio tag match win at mania
He's team cheated by outside interference by those football players and everyone cheered
It seem really strange for the face to go over with interference
They got cheered because it was Eagles players in Philly.
Fantastic breakdown. Just found this channel and I am now a subscriber!
All points are good about the matter.
Well done video.
I'm to believe this guy was getting a daily news letter on professional wrestling in 1997? HA! From who? This guy has absolutely no credibility.
Coming to places like Ottawa for the first time and charging no less than $80 is also not the smartest choice
*checks notes* no no its the wrestling guy when he talks wrestling. And the hockey guy when he talks hockey. It's a whole thing
Chris Jerico isn't as useful as a vet as before because:
- when younger talent fueds with him (MJF, Sammy, Hook etc). They don't come out of that fued for the better and it actually hurts them more so than it helps. Probably because the segments vs Chris are not that great.
- recent allegations have hurt Chris's rep a lot than ever
Tony NEEDS to take a back seat and let someone similar to Triple H's position who understands how to book good storylines, fueds, etc
Get rid of the EVP status! Wrestlers should never be in charge/ over see other wrestlers. Only Tony.
Have actual safety rules for wrestling so the wrestlers have longer careers in AEW and aren't trying to literally harm themselves (like the glass situation)
I 100% agree.
Great vid bro, keep up the good work.
I never knew hockey guy covers wrestling too!! Now i love this guy even more❤ thank you for entertaining me all these years! Cheers!
I mean seriously......where the hell is Brit Baker?
If Britt Baker went to WWE she would be a mega star and be headlining a WrestleMania within two years!
Injured
Tony Khan needs to step down and let veteran wrestlers and producers handle the company
Oprah was at AEW recently, You get a belt , you get a belt, everyone gets a belt.
I had high hopes for AEW but a little success has gone to TKs head. The company lacks structure and leadership. The only person to blame is TK.
What if they are playing CM Punk more as a Tweener
Dope video man ! I really enjoyed listing to you ! I like the white bored too ! Jus subbed ! Keep the videos coming brother !
Are you sure im not your long lost son? Because you have said legit everything i have thought for the past 2 years😭😂
Dude pulled up with the white board and notes, he's serious
Tony is terrible and always has been.
Spot on man. Took the words out of my mouth
New sub here
Everything you said here is well said, inherently or evidently truthful, and very well presented.
I saw
1. Perry standing and Punk approached Perry (Punk could have just moved on and did his thing).
2. Perry stepped to the side followed by Punk, cutting him off.
3. Punk SHOVED Perry
4. Punk choked Perry
