    I'm studying as an ecologist in Australia, so we encounter a LOT of spiders, both dangerous and (nearly) totally harmless. Apparently spiders don't like being picked up by humans because they think the oils on our skin are stinky :(

    That’s a Texas brown(no joke that’s the common name) idr what the scientific name for that one was. I at one point had 32 tarantulas I was keeping at the same time. She’s was right though the venom is about a bee sting, but the size of the fang can put a pretty big hole in you. Anything native to NA is pretty docile and not very venomous. I would love to see her keep multiple tarantula’s. They are freaking awesome to watch and feed. I no longer have any but they are neat and would make good ambassadors.

    Thats def a texas brown, and yes they do have Urticating hairs, not reticulating hairs, and they can definitely flick them around not just drop them. I saw a friend get bit by one and I can confirm that it hurts a decent amount, they likened it to being stung by a bumblebee, but it was not too bad otherwise, no real danger as far as toxicity goes.

    Looks like an aphonopelma species! Genus is common in Texas, and you are correct that typically the bite (depending on species) is no worse than a bee sting. For a new world like the one you found, they can release urticating (itching) hairs which can get into your eyes and lungs. Aphonopelmas are great spiders:)

    The Texas brown tarantula, also known as Oklahoma brown tarantula or Missouri tarantula (Aphonopelma hentzi), is one of the most common species of tarantula living in the Southern United States today. Texas brown tarantulas can grow to leg spans in excess of 10 cm (4 in), and weigh more than 85 g (3 oz) as adults. Their bodies are dark brown, though shades may vary between individual tarantulas. The colors are more distinct after a molt, as with many arthropods. A. hentzi is a rather docile and nonaggressive species. When disturbed, like most other tarantulas, A. hentzi maneuvers itself to a stance on its hind legs and raises its front legs in a threatening manner. Additionally, A. hentzi and most other tarantulas found in the Americas have small, coarse, brown or black urticating hairs on their abdomens that they kick in the direction of whatever they may feel threatens them. It is the main species preyed upon by the tarantula hawk, Pepsis grossa, in areas where the two species overlap.
    Bites from the Texas brown tarantula, as with all New World tarantulas, are generally not a serious harm to humans except in the case of an allergic reaction. Due to the large size of their fangs, the puncture wound from a bite can also be painful and lead to secondary infection if not properly treated.
    I did not copy and paste this from Wiki. I did it all from memory....(okay, maybe I did copy and paste. Only because I was curious and thought you guys may like to know as well. lol

  • @foxy.y
    @foxy.y 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +38

    Yeah so if a tarantula does 3:18 DO NOT APPROACH as that's a warning. A patient spider indeed.
    They flick off hairs in the way that they scratch their "butt" with their back leg, and it can madly irritate your skin, can even get in your-or worse-your pet's airway, and can be fatal for pets. Humans usually just get irritated skin for even a week or longer, but it might be just few days. Their hairs are so sensitive, they can get startled by even a slight breath of air. This is also why they make cobwebs to help them catch prey. Tarantulas are actually very vulnerable, a fall from a table like that could be fatal for some. They do re-grow limbs when they molt, but if damage is greater they easily die. Their "blood" is transluscent liquid, and once it starts leaking it's pretty much done in the nature. In captivity, it's fixed with gentle brush and superglue. Trust me, it can be difficult keeping them alive even with regular food available😅. When threatened, and if not one of the aggressive species, they will prefer to run away or flick hairs than bite. They can be teleporting-fast and are actually freaking awesome, their front "legs" are actually what they use as hands and are called pedialps. If you keep them as pets, you get to see how they decorate their terrarium according to their likings. And if you put a ping pong ball in there with them, they'll move it around.

    • @numbingcactus153
      @numbingcactus153 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That "blood" works as hydraulic liquid and that's how they walk and why the curl up after death. Also the reason once they start leaking its hard to stop because of the hydraulic pressure.

  • @Jeremy-kg1zr
    @Jeremy-kg1zr 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    Not quite sure if I misheard or if your random knowledge was Really impressive for someone who doesn't keep spiders, but slightly off. Urticating hairs are on the top of the abdomen and they flick them into the air by rubbing them with their back legs. The T that you found (most probably a Texas Brown) is really docile, but I'd still advise against getting your face too close. You do Not want those hairs in your eye. That's a doctors visit and a Lot of discomfort for a good while, with possible infection. They might flick hairs even if they aren't feeling threatened enough to display a threat pose, etc.

      I'm not ashamed to say that the laptop screen suddenly slammed closed and killed it.
      I've become ok with spiders, so long as I see them first before they get close to me. So this one had triggered my arachnophobic reaction... 😅

    well now I officially have a crush on Maya. this lil texas brown is a cutie! also, she meant "urticating," not reticulating. retics are pythons, new world tarantulas have urticating hairs. 🥰

    That looks like my favorite species. It's hard to ID them cause they can look so similar but I love Aphonopelma chalcodes.
    Edit: Just kidding it looks like an Aphonopelma hentzi

      The max you've seen perhaps. The bigger ones are probably under your bed or in your walls.

      Big spiders are typically better than small ones. Like with scorpions, the bigger the species the less potent venom they'll have as they start to use brute strength rather than specialized venom, as crushing prey is way more energy efficient

      I'd rather deal with a tarantula than a wolf spider. Wolf spider can get pretty much that big, and they tend to be quite a bit more aggressive. Not to say that they'll attack on sight, but they're definitely more likely to bite when they feel threatened than a tarantula.

    good news is no native tarantulas over there have significant venom to humans

    • @TaffyDMarco

      There aren't many brown Tarantula species in Texas so I'm pretty sure that's a venomous Brown Texas spider

      Several species in fact! The one here is likely a Texas Brown but it's kinda hard to tell.
