  • One PBA bowler had the chance to win 200,000 dollars and it all came down to one shot. What's even more incredible is that this match featured a 280, but this still wasn't enough to win the match. In this video we breakdown exactly what happened.

Do a breakdown of the Voss/Asbaty 2010 Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles win. They climbed the ladder and it got Voss his exemption for the next season. Voss needed to pick up a 7-10 to make it as the 5th and make the show.

This was one of the greatest telecasts of the glory years of the PBA when the PBT telecasts were must see TV on Saturday afternoon! Today’s PBA quite often borders on being unwatchable! History was made the next week as Johnny Petraglia shot 300 the next week! Norm Duke actually got revenge on Bryan Goebel a couple of weeks later when he beat him in the title match of the Johnny Petraglia Open. You had mentioned the 300-279 Learn vs Petraglia match. My opinion is that the Aulby vs Ozio was better as that one was actually in the bowling center and not in a stadium setting. I also think that Bo Burton’s 1050 at the Angle Open was the greatest performance I have seen and not Bob Learn’s. Great content and keep it coming!

The year was 2000... I was jackpotting (action bowling) against a guy named John who had a physical handicap. He had a normal left arm but had a short right arm. He admittedly doesn't count his boards. He is a true area bowler. So as long as he throws it to the left, then he hit his mark as far as he's concerned. Not to mention he doesn't post his shots at all, he falls off to the side at the end of every approach. Put him on a sport shot or even a long oil pattern he's finished. The house we was bowling in had one of the most walled up shots I'd ever seen which was Loma Vista Lanes in Kansas City Missouri. There were about 8 other guys bowling across 3 pairs of lanes, but they were struggling. I started by leaving a 7 pin in the first frame, and John struck in the first frame. From that point, I took it off the sheet for a 290. This non-bowling idiot shot a 300. I was pissed. If you saw his game and got beat after you bowled a very solid game with skill, and he beats you by just hurling the ball to the left and watches it walk to the pocket every time. But to my credit, I can't count how any times I've beat him. Believe me, it was waaayyyy more than the 1 time he beat me.

This was insane watching live as a kid. I also saw Ozio 279 loss to Mike Aulby as a kid and he didnt want to talk about it when we back in town after the season. I didnt blame him. Decades later he was willing to open up about it years after he retired. I miss these days.

It's not the highest game I've ever lost with. But I once shot 248 bowling for youth all stars in my county, and lost to my opponent by 51, who shot 299.
Better yet, I averaged 243 for the day, which was the highest in the field, and lost 2 of my 3 games. :)

It seems back then you can really move left and hook those reactive ball resins on real wood lanes. I would say 95% of the time a 280 game would be a winner.

I'd say a 280 would win 99% of the time. (but lets no argue about it) Norm has alway been my favourite PBA player. Love his demeanour, his attitude and his control (of both his shot and emotions) is exemplary.

About 20 years ago, i bowled in a head to head league. My opponent had a 279, but I left a solid 4 pin in the first and struck out for a 290. I was lucky and just got my 1 pin spare earlier than she did (yes, she was a great bowler).

back when the PBA had some seriously legit corporate sponsors. I can even remember back in the 1980s when Miller Brewing Co. sponsored 3 tournaments on the tour. If you were to win all three of their events, Miller would put up a million dollars for the player if they could win them all.

Because back in the day At the time of This telecast Resin balls were just starting to come out And the Lanes Didn't have as much oil As they do now Because the p b a Didn't know At the time How strong balls Would become So no one Could play straight If you did you had do a large speed Is with rubber or plastic And that reaction probably wasn't good But norm duke play everywhere Before he retired From the p b a tour I watched him hook the whole lane

I can see how that'd feel like it. You did everything right and you still didn't win. But there is some humor when both people shoot 300, regardless. The last one that I can remember seeing was Simonsen v. Zavjalova (can't remember the event).

It actually isn't the highest scoring PBA match! There were 2 matches in PBA history that had a total score of 579. Johnny Petraglia vs Bob Learn JR & Mike Aulby vs David Ozio. The Aulby vs Ozio match was in the title match.
Norm Duke's 280 was the highest losing score in PBA televised history.

FYI the Aulby-Ozio affair was the 1993 Wichita Open.......Ozio finished with 279, Aulby was on front 9 and actually NEEDED the first one in the 10th to win, then had to quickly refocus to nail the last 2 strikes for 300, which he did.
