See, finally somebody did the test that i wanted to see. It is possible to boost the performance of the Fuma 2 beyond NH-U12A levels, just by swapping the fans with something with higher RPMs. It is not by much, but its possible.
I have a Scythe Mugen Rev. B. It cost 40€ and can hold its own against coolers twice the price, plus its really quiet. Scythe is massively underrated imo.

Might be too late to comment. The Mugen 5 Rev. B performs lower than the $25 Gammaxx 400. You can find multiple sources on the web, e.g., tomshardware. The reason is in its underwhelming fan that is focused on being quiet. Not only that, it only comes with one fan. What's absolutely crazy is I just placed my order via Amazon last night at 11:00pm. Wake up in the morning to HWC featuring the FUMA 2 AND honouring it with a "Damn good value" award?! I couldn't be happier!
I moved from my 2500k (built in 2011) to a Ryzen 3600 and the stock cooler was useless for me. Gaming no issue but when rendering photos out of Adobe Lightroom the CPU would go over 100 degrees Celsius and the computer would auto shutdown after doing only 10-20 photos. I was regretting this so called upgrade until I got the Fuma 2 last week. My temperature while rendering is now FORTY degrees Celsius less while outputting photos. It runs a steady 60 degrees Celsius while rendering hundreds of photos now. I am absolutely stunned, as well as very happy. It’s a good purchase.
as a proud user of Scythe's Mugens for over 12 years now, i can highly recommend this company! top quality & seem to "live" forever! (one cooled my Phenom²x4 955 BE for 9.5 years without any problem or drop in performance!) a comparison with the Mugen would have been a nice addition !
Could you guys possibly review the Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo and see how it compares? I heard only good things about this very affordable cooler. Great video as usual!
What I learned from this is that Noctua DH 15 it's the cooler to have and this is the one to have if you want something good, as affordable as possible.
And the space to use a D15. Coz, it ain't logical to get a new case to fit that Noctua NH-D15, transfer everything to that new case and hope that your memory fits very well under it. Not going to get rid of a 300 USD memory kit with RGB, so I can get a D15. We have an expression over here: I ain't that crazy.
I have the Fuma 2 on my 3900x and I stay well below 70c no matter what I’m doing. Definitely love the look and performance of this CPU cooler! I highly recommend this cooler!!
Do a video on the Arctic Freezer 34 esports duo next! I find it to be almost as good as the big boys, while offering silent performance, for just 40 bucks!
I'm still rocking a Noctua NH D14 and it's currently keeping my 3950X at 63 degrees under full hour long load on all 16 physical cores and 32 threads. I've had it since my 8350 which I ran daily at 4.7 and could easily hit 5Ghz+ with. I also had an Intel 6700k under at at 4.? High GHz...(I'd have to look at my old screen shots, but it was a class leading result. A 1700 and 3700X round out what I've run under this still Amazing air cooler. I just wanted to rant on that really to say THANK YOU to Noctua. Noctua, Thank You!!
I use this in my Xeon overclock experiments, and it's sharpness is only measured by how quiet it is. I love this cooler and it's very affordable when looking at the compatibility side of things. It's not as fancy as Corsair's new cooler, but it's pretty easy to install from my experience.
Scythe has always been the best for reasonably priced low noise coolers. I used to have a Ninja on an overclocked Q6600 back in the days and it didn't even need a fan. Only the back case fan was enough to cool the CPU. Most underrated brand ever.
To each their own. :) We prefer to use a CPU and real world test system. If GN wants to go about it differently, good for them. Variety is the spice of life as they say.
@@HardwareCanucks Variety has no place in a fair comparison, that results in a recommendation to buy or pass - checking up on your methodology, there are still plenty of questions about variables in your testing, that should have been made clear.
@@Bluth53 In the end, it's all down to tolerances (margin of error). GN has done hell of a lot of things to improve the accuracy, but tbh that will only matter for top tier overclockers who do crazy things where a couple of degrees difference will make or break a system. There will be no dramatic changes in how coolers perform because of this, coolers with poor performance is not going to become dramatically better all of the sudden.
@@gutterg0d You're spot on - I wouldn't call myself a top tier overclocker, though. Just part of a niche audience, looking for the latest and greatest (in comparison to the established products), who's not willing to operate an AIO(or custom loop), despite running way past recommendations for Core voltage, beneficial for specific purposes on my end.
@@Bluth53 They have published their test method. It looks reasonable to me. What specifically do you have concerns with? I thought the review of the A500 was very well done especially the follow up where they tried modifying it. I like Tech Jesus and look forward to seeing his results, but when fan RPM's vary by +/-10% any cooler you buy is going to have that variability built into it. You can be overly analytical. I have Noctua D-15, I had it on a Ryzen 1700,overclocked at 3.825MHz and 1.35V when I built a new 3700X system, I put a Deepcool Gammaxx 400, with an Arctic Bionix F120 Fan on the 1700. The temperature difference was only 2.1 C. In a test using Prime 95 for 15 minutes.
Scythe is an oldschool cooler brand, I still remember the mighty orochi making the rounds in tech magazines and blogs, I had a fan controller from them, it looked really good at the time in my case.
I have been using the same Scythe 3000 rpm fans in my builds for last 5 years. nice see them making some new stuff. I might pick this up for my up coming build thanks for the info .
I'm gonna keep an eye on this one, Scythe were the dogs danglies back in the days of lga775, but sadly they pretty much dropped off the radar in recent years, but if GN confirm the results found here it would be a nice comeback for Scythe and it might be my go to cooler for the future.
I recently replaced my old brand name liquid cooler with a Noctua NH-D15 (with non-standard Thermal Grizzly thermal paste - to get the best performance possible, since it substantially out-performs the NT-H1 paste that Noctua provides), out of fears that the old cooler could leak over time and totally wreck my system as happened to my last build. I was expecting some loss in cooling performance, but was amazed and surprised when the NH-D15 beat the old liquid cooler by a substantial margin - dropping my "100% CPU for over an hour" video rendering workload (on my 140w TDP i7-5820k) by an amazing 15C. I hear no noise at all from either cooling solution in my full tower case (especially since the max temperature I've ever seen with the D15 (only 51C) is still way below my max fan speed settings)... You are right about the minor difficulty of lining up the NH-D15 to get the mounting screws to threaded correctly - that took me a few minutes to accomplish since you're basically doing it blind.
Being in HVAC for more than a decade that is true. Two contra-rotating fans in series do increase static pressure significantly. We had to do this in hospital to overcome HEPA filter level pressure with a 400mm diameter axial flow fan. Those in HVAC will know how difficult this would be to achieve
I use a Scythe Mugen 5 argb+. Another of their coolers and love it. Quite, excellent cooling and attractive. They offer great coolers they're just not very well known, yet. Edit: typo
Great review, bought one because of it's value to performance, great bargain of a cooler. 👌 Was going to buy the NH-D15 but at $110 seems unreasonable.
From what I just watched..... I think it deserves the good old "Damn Good Award" (no need to add the value caveat) It does exactly what it says on the box and then some. It will cool your cpu and be quiet while doing it. Does it handle the hottest of CPUs? Barely. But who in reality can expect a cooler designed to be quit to handle an overclocked oven.
I can only agree with Z Rus. Scythe deserves a lot more attention. Their coolers have a modest look they are whisper-quiet and have a great cooling performance.
Been saying this for a year, if you're looking for a cheap and high performance cooler then go with Scythe, the FUMA 2 and NINJA 5 are fucking awesome, I've been on the latter now for 7 months.
Nice to see Scythe getting some attention. They have been really solid over the last decade, from ITX coolers such as the Big Shuriken and the relatively new Choten to bigger coolers such as the Fuma 2 and Mugen 5. I think they're vastly more popular here in Europe than in the US. Another brand which offers similar price to performance and is also underrated is Thermalright with their "Macho" and and "True spirit" lineups.
These tests have a major flaw - noise measurement accuracy. The results are RPM matched instead of dBA matched. We have no information about measurement distance and noise floor level. With so loud results, I assume that the measurements were done close; care needs to be taken to avoid air hitting the mic. Preferable is to run tests in a low noise floor environment and mic located at an angle that corresponds to the usual ear location. Especially higher frequencies are much louder when directed at the listener, so it's important to properly simulate the listener position.
Its been years and still nothing beats the NH-D15. In a 40+ summer like the ones here in Egypt, I'll take that performance lead and just settle for second place in acoustics. I do believe that investing in your cooler pays off. I will only change my old V6GT to the NH-D15 because the former doesn't support AM4. I bought the V6GT back in 2010 and it needed a change of fans 7 years later but it still performs in 2020!!!!

What's absolutely crazy is I just placed my order via Amazon last night at 11:00pm. Wake up in the morning to HWC featuring the FUMA 2 AND honouring it with a "Damn good value" award?! I couldn't be happier!
I just bought one. Perfect review. And finally a cheap air cooler that frickin works!
looks like scythe did a pretty good job here, and glad to see they're still in the game too
I'd rather buy this than a D15 and actually spend those extra $40 on a more powerful gpu or something.
More storage 👀
It's just ugly, I'd spend a few dollars more for be quiet dark rock 4.
@@ilijapetrovic5002 hmm ugly? I prefer the black aesthetic of be quiet but the scythe also looks nice
I got a Tc14pe for 50 nzd or like 28USD.. My r5 3600 doesnt get above 62degrees and I don't have a cpu fan
@@BogDog9 Just a heatsink alone?
Your jumper is great!
as a proud user of Scythe's Mugens for over 12 years now, i can highly recommend this company! top quality & seem to "live" forever!
Bit better than 212 Black Edition, not a real competitor
Been using the Fuma 2 since July and it's been flawless.
OMG. Loved it! I love crazy value products!
@@dorientjewoller113 if you have that amount of money I would recommend custom water cooling solution like jayztwocents's.
@@vasipro Lols, Jayztwocent. Since his review of Corsair A500 Air, it's best to take his advice with a truck load of salt.
Just bought one a week ago. The only thing I can say about it right now is that the fins are pretty flimsy
I have the Fuma 2 on my 3900x and I stay well below 70c no matter what I’m doing. Definitely love the look and performance of this CPU cooler! I highly recommend this cooler!!
3:11 NH-D12? i believe that's the NH-D15 xD
Scythe as the name implies is something a death reaper would wield and why it is slaying the competition
It's a Scythe, it is supposed to be sharp. It cools your system, it cuts the lawn, what's not to like?
It's called "Scythe" for a reason 😋
I have a set of old Scythe fans under the hood of my PC.
They're a good brand.
Glad to see they're still good.
I didn't cut myself. I'm now worried if I even installed this correctly.
I use this in my Xeon overclock experiments, and it's sharpness is only measured by how quiet it is. I love this cooler and it's very affordable when looking at the compatibility side of things. It's not as fancy as Corsair's new cooler, but it's pretty easy to install from my experience.
A bit of a nitpicky point, but...
RPM - rotations per minute
RPMs is not really a thing
Scythe has always been the best for reasonably priced low noise coolers. I used to have a Ninja on an overclocked Q6600 back in the days and it didn't even need a fan. Only the back case fan was enough to cool the CPU. Most underrated brand ever.
I actually got a cut when clipping on the fan on my mugen 5 rev b 😒. These scythe coolers are pretty sharp yo.
Ok, so we need gloves for scythe.
Yesss, I've been recommending this for a while
I installed this in pc and I swear it just keeps
FUMING
Haha! Very Fumy!
I have had a Fuma 3 on my 2700X for about a year now. I cannot be happier! It is dead silent, and stays at 65c on Prime95 small ffts
be quiet! : *exist
Scythe Fuma 2 : BE QUIET !!!
Scythe has been always an underrated company, i am glad they are getting more attention, besides these new fans look and perform great for the price.
I just bought my new Noctua CPU cooler ;-;
It's at the same level, but not better.
This is exactly the design, size and price I needed for my new mATX build. Great that I saw this one.
after watching GN video about cpu coolers, I can't watch any other cooler reviews
"if we find 'cool' stuff" >.>
I have this on my 3700x and I've absolutely loved it, it so quiet that all I can hear is my jet engine of a reference 5700xt.
So cute to see how young you are. Scythe Mugen is a pretty legendary name for those of us who have been playing with computer parts for a long time.
Scythe is the first brand I check out for tower coolers these days. Got both the Fuma2 for my wife's PC and the mugen 5 aRGB+ for my own.
Rocking a mugen 5 myself and boy oh boy the build quality and how it looks is especially nice with those tops on the heat pipes.
Edit: typo
Hi, did you have mugen 5 with 2 fans?
Would it perform better?
Great review, bought one because of it's value to performance, great bargain of a cooler. 👌
Was going to buy the NH-D15 but at $110 seems unreasonable.
Owner of a Scythe Ninja 5 here, they made really great stuff!
I've been using Scythe for air cooling since the original Ninja/infinity. Just awesome.
Fuma 2 and mugen 5 rev b are both banger coolers.
Got this thing for my i7 12600k.
Very happy with my purchase!
Been saying this for a year, if you're looking for a cheap and high performance cooler then go with Scythe, the FUMA 2 and NINJA 5 are fucking awesome, I've been on the latter now for 7 months.
I got one for my 3950x and painted top white to match my build, works great with my 4.4ghz all core oc. At 1.35v
What temps do you get a full load? did u try with PBO?
Nice to see Scythe getting some attention. They have been really solid over the last decade, from ITX coolers such as the Big Shuriken and the relatively new Choten to bigger coolers such as the Fuma 2 and Mugen 5. I think they're vastly more popular here in Europe than in the US.
Another brand which offers similar price to performance and is also underrated is Thermalright with their "Macho" and and "True spirit" lineups.
I'm using it for 3 months. Insanely good and quiet cooler. Fan bearings are nearly noiseless. It is also rather cheap for its quality and performance!
Scythe is great. I ended up ordering a Big Shuriken 3 for my ITX build because the NH-L12S was out of stock everywhere. I'm not upset at all.
Eh, Assassin III and that new Zalman cooler beat D15 if you are prepared to give up acoustics.
