When I was around nine my mother had a fit about alkaline food for a couple of months. I had to pee on ph paper which she would then inspect, I was scolded every time I ate something that was not alkaline (what foods were alkaline seamed to change from time to time). She would also preach about the benefits of lemons in water and eventually when I had repeatedly pointed out that lemons are acidic her alkaline fad died down. Weird childhood 🙄

God, I feel that. My mom is convinced that cooking vegetables increases the carbohydrates in them and destroys nutrients. There is, of course, some research showing that some nutrients are lost during heat treatment, but that's all offset from the fact that cooking the vegetable makes it easier to digest. She keeps saying that some raw vegetables are "keto". I am absolutely certain she just likes eating salad and is matching hearsay diet advice on facebook to that, which at the end of the day is fine - she's eating vegetables and not doing keto or anything like that - but it's a bit cringe to listen to.

If alkaline water actually diluted your blood and changed its pH you would die. Your blood's pH is strongly controlled and kept in a range of 7.35 to 7.45 on the pH scale. If it really changes your body's pH you would have to make the ER your new home

In Type 2 diabetes, insulin production is decreased and cells are also insulin resistant. It's typically caused by a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors (obesity, exercise, diet, etc.). This is in contrast to Type 1 diabetes, which is an unpreventable autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the cells that make insulin.

For those watching in 2022 like me, there have been some updates on how extracellular acidity from that lactic acid waste prevents our anti-tumor immune cells from doing their job and making tumorous cells undergo cell death. It seems to be a defense mechanism of the T cells to stop themselves from denaturing due to excess acidity, as well as a way to stop these T cells from attacking non-harmful cells. The excess protons from the acid cause a GPCR signaling cascade leading to a ligand binding to these T cells that prevents them from acting. However, tumor-bearing mice given sodium bicarbonate had a decreased expression of this ligand and more neutralization of tumor tissue. That's just one large study from 2020 though.
That's not to say any of these crazy claims Nile shows in the video are right. They're WAY out of left field, far from the science that's actually related to acidity and cancer. But I figured I'd share this tidbit I happened to find for a class project! Fuck pseudoscience.

I posted this somewhere else but just though it was relevant to solve the confusion.
I just think there seems to be a misunderstanding between the terms 'alkaline' and 'alkalizing'. Lemon juice is not alkaline, but when your body breaks it down it creates byproducts that your body absorbs, and those byproducts just so happen to be alkaline.
I also do not think that alkaline water cures diseases. I google searched 'are lemons alkaline' or something and quoted what it said. I will find the original source and link it here.
To those that say something along the lines of 'your stomach produces acid so why doesn't that harm you' it's because your stomachs job is to metabolize food with the acidic digestive fluids. It is designed to be a container for that fluid and to keep it seperate from your body while filtering out and absorbing the byproducts and nutrients. Those nutrients do end up in the body and bloodstream.
I hope this cleared everything up. Wish you all the best.
Edit: Just thought its worth mentioning that a certain food is given a certain score based on how alkaline the byproducts are. As I've mentioned above, this kind of score is called a PRAL score. However, the score a substance gets when you test its inherent alkalinity/acidity (right on the spot, no metabolizing) is called its pH. These are different things.
Also, the main purpose of keeping acidic substances from reaching your kidney is because your body has to borrow alkaline material from elsewhere in the body (i.e bones, teeth for calcium) to neutralize the acidic ones. If this happens enough this can lead to lots of health problems (i.e arthritis, other diseases possibly but I'm not 100% sure on that). This is why people say alkalizing foods can prevent various diseases. (it's not that alkalizing foods cure diseases, it's that not consuming enough alkalizing foods causes them, so the logic is that consuming alkalizing foods can restore the balance and 'cure' the diseases you have that are a direct result of not having enough alkalizing food in your system)

Actually there is a reaction between baking soda and citric acid which is well known to enhance muscle fatigue for short periods of time (a few minutes) and its because baking soda and citric acid react to form sodium citrate and CO2, and sodium citrate is what enhances muscle fatigue and aids in spending that last bit of energy in the gym but it’s also dangerous if too much is consumed.
Basically lemon soda isn’t nonsense, also it aids in dental health because it neutralizes the acids that bacteria make between teeth that can damage teeth.

In some cases they are, citrus and citric acid are metabolized to an alkaline form in the body.

    • @RBuckminsterFuller
      @RBuckminsterFuller 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

@@atourdeforce The very definition of an acid is a molecule which likes to give away hydrogen. If it no longer has a hydrogen to give away then it is no longer an acid. If something sour becomes a base then it's only because a different molecule received that hydrogen and became an acid.
For a reaction with an organic carboxylic acid (such as citric acid), the formula goes -COOH + B(-) -> -COO- + A(+). In this case, the citric acid turns into citrate and the whole system becomes more acidic.

    • @atourdeforce

@@atourdeforce The citrate does not increase net pH because it was created through the donation of a hydrogen to the system (your body). In order to convert citrate back to citric acid it would need to take that hydrogen back and you would end up with no net change. This does not happen because of the chemical equilibrium.
Regardless, the only thing you need to know is that adding acid to a solution will lower pH, making it ACIDIC. There are no exceptions.

All I know is that goats are given salmiak when they keep getting kidney stones, which is delightfully adorable

Metabolic acidosis can prevent the formation of kidney stones if you have a tendency of having ones composed of calcium oxalate, which is soluble in acidic urine. But that is really the only benefit of manipulating urine pH, because in the end, our body is a pH controlling masterpiece.

About the "don't drink water, because it makes your kidneys work harder" analogy.
Another, mechanical one, would be something like "don't use brakes in your car because it will wear them", or "always double-clutch because the synchronizers will wear".
That's the point of having them in the first place! You wouldn't add them in if you weren't supposed to use them!
