I had the same problem with an ION USB cassette deck. Windows set it up as 1 channel, so I was only getting audio from the left channel coming through. Setting it to 2 channels fixed the problem.

Good one Gary ! :) I have a mackie 420d firewire mixer that is default stereo unless something is plugged into a mono mic channel.

It’s unfortunate that this device defaults to one channel (mono) and due to this it’s practically unusable on Android as a recording device because there is no way to switch it to two channel operation on the OS level, not even in the developer menu, so any app will record two mono channels like Audacity would do on Windows had you not set it up correctly in the OS settings as shown in this video. Well, at least it was like that, it’s been a few years when I was trying that, it was Android 8 at that time, now we have the 14th, so things might’ve changed or just remained the same. :-/ Since then I changed a couple of soundcards. I was missing the input gain knob on the Behringer unit and I didn’t want to add another device to the recording chain, such as amplifier just to tame down the volume, otherwise some signals came heavily clipped, later on I got to know so called RCA attenuators might be bought to do this job as well, but that was too late.

Every time I connect it, windows defaults to 1 (muted) channel. But it didn't the first few weeks so when that started it had me scratching my head

That is a new one for me. I use 2 different (UFO and UCA) into the same PC. I wonder if you were to uninstall all usb audio and reinstall if that would work. I have been using these for 4 years without problems on 3 different PCs. On the plus side at least you know how to reset it.
