I just got a Quest 3 to use for hockey practice not expecting much out of it beyond that…and it’s pretty phenomenal. My biggest takeaway from this video was to try theater mode and dang! It’s so fun to watch videos on a giant “screen”. I can’t really see how the AVP provides a 7x better experience?
This was a wonderful story to watch. Jon's style is unique. It's so dramatic I love it. The message is sent across really well. iPad Pro comparison was spot on too.
Take iJustine for example. I love Apple gear, but it’s not fun watching a reviewer gush over every single product because they’re so blinded by tech lust, they’re incapable of any critical thought whatsoever.

I bought the 1TB version, and absolutely love it. NOT perfect, but still an incredible experience every time I use it… Plus figured out how to wear it comfortably for long periods of time using the Solo Knit Band… Definitely more iPadOS than MacOS, and plenty of apps to keep ONE occupied even if not entirely VisionOS… 🤔

One of the most honest reviews out there. I returned mine for some of the issues mentioned. Could not justify price when I’m able to do the same things on my iPad.

Can you do a Vision Pro update now that the ultra wide display and the submerged short has been released? I’m curious if you still feel the same way after all the recent updates.
This was a perfect review! For someone who watched you since years. I enjoyed the honesty. I don’t have $3,500 I will wait until is the same price as an Ipad.
I've been a long-term fan and watcher Jon. We get what Apple is doing to you is incredibly sad given your long experience reviewing their products and being honest, but I don't need to be reminded in the review. Seems like the message at the beginning throws an undertone to the material. Would be cool if you feel like you have to bring this up, bring it up at the end - would be more effective with the audience imo.
you are one of the 1st tech channels I subscribed to on TH-cam, that is because you have integrity. i know im going to get a honest review. keep up the great work brotha!
Another fabulous video Jon, as someone in the UK we haven’t got Vision Pro yet (although I’m hearing UK and Canada before WWDC) but I can’t wait to try it. I can’t afford it, but I can’t wait for the experience.
The problem I have is knowing many people equate someone who despises Apple as a person being more HONEST about Apple. When has that ever been true about anything? Despising someone doesn’t make you more honest about them, no more than loving someone makes you a liar. One makes you more likely to look for every negative thing you can find while the other might focus only on the positive. They BOTH can create biases. People can be DISHONEST coming from either extreme. It’s just as easy for negative bias to slip into character assassinations and false witnessing as positive bias can lead to exaggerated accomplishments and cover-ups. Finally, humans are hardwired to BELIEVE something negative more because it’s a survival instinct. Keep this in mind when assessing any new information.
My problem is how dishonest reviews of Apple products are because Apple does blacklist reviews they don't find to be positive. AVP is overhyped tech from 2016. It didn't take off then and the improvements and refinements don't appear to be enough now, especially considering the trade-offs. There are very, very few negative reviews. There are a LOT of dishonest positive reviews.
Blacklist… Interesting… Anybody could buy the product, as over two hundred thousand have (us included), a handful have reviewed it, and then returned it… You could do the same right NOW if you have enough room on a credit card, just remember it’s fourteen days to return it, or it’s yours… So how is anyone blacklisted… 🤔
@@Lostcause1974Blacklisted? What does that even mean? He’s “blacklisted” because they didn’t loan him a review unit? They didn’t loan one to Greg’s Gadgets, is he blacklisted too? They will decide if the AVP offers the same user experience and interface.
I feel like reviewers should focus on testing a product and sharing their experience using it, instead of dictating whether it's 'worth the price'. That's my decision to make. After all, is a Porsche worth paying for when you can get a Ford Mustang or a Tesla that might even be faster? Ultimately, customers decide whether the experience justifies the cost.
I love your videos Jon but the intro kinda put me off no offense sounds like if u weren’t black listed you would be singing a different tune - imagine this review without the intro I’ll totally love that - 😅
Personally, I think the real failing of the device as it stands is based in one very Apple thing, the ecosystem. They were so concerned with the ecosystem, that the compatibility layer is ipadOS apps. What they should have had it use is MacOS apps. If they had made it compatible with MacOS, the M2 could have enabled the device to just replace laptops and have the full spatial computing and editing suite they targeted the device to do.
They are definitely way too controlling, forciing iPadOS more and more on their intire lineup. Too bad. I've been a keen, creative Apple user since the 90's and for at least ten years I've been researching alternatives to thier ecosystem, just as a preperation to jump ship at the final straw.
You're a legend in the tech world Jon. And we all know it. So it doesn't matter if Apple blacklists u. Your contribution is undeniable. Plus u single handidly founded Techno Buffalo.
Agree totally. The tech is amazing. It's great fun to *play* with. Is there significant *practical* utility to this device? No. Will I ever use this as my "daily drive" like my iPhone? No. Do I want to strap on a bulky headset for hours at a time? No. (I've worn glasses all my life, and I don't like it.) Is it worth $3,500? No. *If* they make this thing as light and comfortable as a pair of glasses, *if* it has similar utility to my iPhone, *if* the price is kept to the $1,000 price point, then I might be interested. That's a lot of ifs.
actually your eyesight looked a lot better than many other youtubers/reviewers where it looked very bad. still no where near the demo videos and I am not too keen on the uncanny valley-but-not-completely-terrible personas/avatars, but at least eyesight actually looked usable in your video
Nice video Jon, do you feel that this is really the next big thing from Apple? This device in the footsteps of the Mac, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad and the Apple Watch?
Great as always Jon. Weird technical question - how did you get the ability to record video playing in the Vision Pro. It always blacks out for me! Such a big fan of you friend!
Needs higher FOV, less lens glare, get rid of the unnecessary screen on the front that’s useless to the user (will also reduce weight and price) and I’ll be back in.
I thought sitting at center court watching an NBA game would be great. I tried it on the Quest 3 with Xtadium and a NBA league pass trial. Not nearly as good as expected. You have to keeping looking left and right as the players move up and down the court and you don’t get the close-up views like a typical broadcast game. Also you don’t feel like you’re in the crowd: you feel alone. Not to mention the resolution wasn’t very good with Quest; well below hi def. Apple might do better?
From what I’ve seen they’re only making like 1m of them this year and seeing how it goes. The amount of content around them is insane and honestly meta probably benefits more than anymore from people eager to have something “similar” but I don’t have hard data on that. I was lucky enough to do the demo at the Apple Store and it is very impressive, and idk if it’s just me but it’s also really uncomfortable even for that 20 mins. . I know LTT shared a similar opinion.
I also remember the iPad being launched and called a toy, but they found a way to make it more useful so I’m sure they will. Especially once it can save people money on sports or they can have pokemon battles. It really will live or die by getting some killer apps.
It does NOT really, we have both 21 and 22. However, honestly it does not really matter, the experience and enjoyment of exploration is well worth the coin. A greater FoV will definitely enhance the experience for sure, along with an M3 chip and an additional 6-12GB of RAM… 🤔
Did you watch Avatar on theater mode? For me the picture quality is not as crisp when I watch this movie on theater mode and not even close to the clarity of watching it in Dolby theater when the movie was in theaters. When I make the screen as big as a 100 inch TV, it looks crisp. Other movies look better in theater mode and the IMAX app experience is better than going to an actual theater. Why doesn't avatar the way of water look good on my AVP?
for myself I am still not sold on VR, if I would get one it would be the metaquest or something like that, because I would probably play games, like beat saber.
I’ve gone through multiple demos at the Apple Store, but in every single one of them, I could literally see the black edges/circles of the viewing “lenses” inside the AVP - very similar to looking through binoculars. I asked the store agent doing the demo about this, all of them say it’s just me and no one else had reported this viewing issue before. Somehow I felt they weren’t being entirely honest about that. Anyway, I tried various light seal combinations but in every one of them, I could see the black edges, just more in some and less in some others. Ultimately, I couldn’t justify spending $4k for this kind of viewing experience, even though the tech is very impressive. Does anyone else have this problem too?
I watched Jon4Lakers when he was unboxing a MacBook Pro, and First gen iPhone. Wow has the time passed, but hey, one of the reasons I got my iPhone first generation, and Flip Mino and other tech!
I don't get why it was not just made smaller and lighter and probably cheaper if its just going to connect to a mac anyway. The battery should of been on the back as a counter weight
"They're the first ones to make a version that is so far above the competition in terms of quality and experience." Experience? Are you sure about that? You literally said 5 seconds earlier the only thing you can really do on it is watch movies. The VP has some nice hardware, but no way it has more experiences even compared to the Quest 2. Meta headsets are simply a better buy at the moment. You can do more with them.
If Apple really wanted this to garner interest from the masses the price wouldn't be as ridiculous as it is. I don't care how great this device is you can't convince the masses that it is something they need in their life when it costs as much as a used older vehicle. Something that will actually provide value to millions of Americans trying to make ends meet.
or you can have the best TV in avp. and itll do more things. you buy a badass regular tv thats all it does...with avp itll take up your whole wall in crystal clear clarity , and you can do other things too...
And never forget: a great TV... you can be 2-4 people watching together, or more. Imagine that with Vision Pro: 3500 + 3500 + 3500 + 3500 dollar = 14 000 dollar! Four people watching the same content if there's no TV. You need to spend 14 000 dollar (plus sales tax) and then it's only 256 GB SSD in each. I totally agree with this review that AVP is still only a toy. Expensive and impressive toy. How can you get ROI with AVP? ROI means return of investment.
Controlling an intel based Mac was extremely janky for me. Basically unusable. One underrated feature I thought was cool that nobody seems to talk about anywhere are spatial pictures. Spatial pictures can only be taken with the headset but pictures taken that way are so cool to look at! I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple makes this a new feature on iPhone 15 pro and beyond.
@6:06 yea I don't know about that, unless the price goes way down because with such a small user base I don't see why developers would spend all the money necessary to make an IOS VR version, where's the incentive?
Also i really really want a demo of Vision Pro, but was able to get spatial videos from my 15 pro max on my Quest 2 with the recent Quest 2 firmware update, and did enjoy the stereoscopic effect, so i am into the tech. but vision pro badly needs to lose weight and gain at least some internal battery, as well as the software improvements (more windows/better productivity, better avatars, better eyesight)
It’s more of a toy than a tool…yeah, that’s the point. Like you said, it’s a media consumption device and people are consuming media at an all time high. It very much has a purpose. When you look at all of the non tech reviewer reviews from just normal people you see exactly what its purpose is.
Not surprising the screens are so good. By all accounts the SONY made micro led displays are the best currently on the market. But the soap on a roap battery just looks ridiculous imho. And for me the number one issue is that it seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. I cant ever see myself strapping a headset onto my face to just do what I can do on a screen in front of me. And the non social aspect of it is also off putting. I mostly watch tv, and movies with family and friends. And of course that absolutely ridiculous price. There is just no way that is worth it.
You can't really review a product that barely have enough apps released for it. AR/VR is the best technology of the 21st century but it lacks softwares is the only downside, same thing with other products like the Meta Quest. Most of the apps doesn't really take advantage of it
I like a lot your review, sincerely, the tone, the honest opinion… etc How in the same time you say that it is a fantastic consumption device and at the end it has no yet a clear purpose ? An iPad, ok, but you can have so many iPad windows in the same environment that it can make a productivity improvement For me spatial computing will never be not an option, even if as an old guy alone in the French south countryside, I will use it as a consumption device also :) But I am waiting as a dev that Apple will allow to code in it with Xcode without being connected to a Mac ! Wait for the WWDC news this year Last point : how it is a blacklisted review ? Not a consensual one maybe ? And it is a good one !
I went for an Apple Vision Pro demo today (1/28/24) and I was blown away. The immersion, the pass through, the look and tap to select, it all just worked! Watching the big TH-camrs I thought it was going to be a pain to use but it was effortless. It truly was something you NEED to see for yourself in person to fully understand. That being said, it is ludicrously expensive and I in no way have the money to actually purchase one. It is literally more than my first car and probably half the value of my current one. It is amazing but not perfect. I took a selfie of me wearing Vision Pro and my phone screen was definitely wonky and I wouldn’t want to type out a text message through it. Also to me, it felt like the Home Screen was a bit too close to my eyes. I’m guessing this could be adjusted but the field of view felt a bit off to me personally. (No, I don’t wear corrective lenses) one last thing, special video on Vision Pro is amazing. If you have a device that can record special video I suggest you do so even if you can’t view it on your current devices because eventually you will probably have a way to properly view and appreciate spacial video. For now I agree with Jon, it’s a cool (expensive) toy.
the same way you saved for your current car.. save for avp...itll take you half the time to doit. you wanted your 8k dollar car right? you did what you needed to...well apply that same mindset towards avp for 4kinc tax.
Once developers start taking advantage of the shared environments feature, the loneliness will improve. Of course at the cost of multiple headsets though
Four grand for a pointless piece of technology. If mobile phones, laptops, and iPads didn't exist, it might be of some use, but they do, so this is completely unnecessary. Not to mention that people look like absolute idiots when using it! 🤦♂️
I noticed that it's really hard to please hard core tech youtubers or just a hardcore techie in general. I think people are just so fed up or accustomed to tech that nothing blows their mind anymore. and trust me I get it.
Couldn't disagree more. As a real screen snob, yes, I'm questioning your snobbery, this is the first vr product that has the resolution that I would want to work with for hours a day. So it's clearly worth the price difference for me. If you don't care about things like screen quality, interface, ecosystem integration etc then there are alot of cheaper crappier products out there. They would never get my money.
Apple doesn’t have the balls to make this also just a conventional VR headset that works with native apps and on steam/ windows. I understand why (they want to build their own AppStore that they own and control) but I see that as the true handicap.
Way before mkbhd we had techno buffalo .some of the first apple reviews i remember came from Jon .apple owes Jon a lot .

I watched Jon4Lakers when he was unboxing a MacBook Pro, and First gen iPhone. Wow has the time passed, but hey, one of the reasons I got my iPhone first generation, and Flip Mino and other tech!
i did the demo, i was impressed, but not for the price they are selling it at. right now i have no use case for this device.
I don't get why it was not just made smaller and lighter and probably cheaper if its just going to connect to a mac anyway. The battery should of been on the back as a counter weight
Good to have a tech reviewer who's not in Apple's pocket. Thorough and fair review. Thanks.
Instant sub from me. I like honest and Maverick reviewers.
Techno Buffalo inspired Techno Panda 🐼
hey techno animal friend!
We need Vision air. Half the weight, size and price with double the battery life.
Can't wait to get the 2nd generation in 17-18 months. Until then will use my Quest 3!
Jaaaaahhhn Rettinger here for TechnoBuffalo. Been here since then. Keep going Jon.
🙏
I’d rather spend 3500 on a really bad ass tv!
or you can have the best TV in avp. and itll do more things.
you buy a badass regular tv thats all it does...with avp itll take up your whole wall in crystal clear clarity , and you can do other things too...
Best review on this scanning device hands down . He is not the only reviewer that got a zit in the same spot
I think Justin Tse and Oliur are also on that list. Strange!
Exactly the same review as everyone else except a month later.
I just love your authenticity!
Thank you!
I’ve never disagreed more with a video. Kind of sad considering this guy was one of the first to review the first iPhone.
What a magnificent review. Jon and his team are amazing. Loved this, Jon. Exquisite as always and super accurate
Thank you!
Looking at it , it’s incredible, nothing like it. This alone is worth the $3500 price tag
Great review Jon, and really appreciate your honesty and integrity.
Thank you!
You can't really review a product that barely have enough apps released for it. AR/VR is the best technology of the 21st century but it lacks softwares is the only downside, same thing with other products like the Meta Quest. Most of the apps doesn't really take advantage of it
$4,000 headset with a 2 hour battery is insane
Yeah.. no thanks. Maybe sodium batteries will save this. These new battery products aren't quite there yet usability wise
I like a lot your review, sincerely, the tone, the honest opinion… etc
How in the same time you say that it is a fantastic consumption device and at the end it has no yet a clear purpose ?
An iPad, ok, but you can have so many iPad windows in the same environment that it can make a productivity improvement
For me spatial computing will never be not an option, even if as an old guy alone in the French south countryside, I will use it as a consumption device also :) But I am waiting as a dev that Apple will allow to code in it with Xcode without being connected to a Mac ! Wait for the WWDC news this year
Last point : how it is a blacklisted review ? Not a consensual one maybe ? And it is a good one !
Oh wow welcome back my guy
As someone who used to watch all of TB vids, why did it take the algorithim so long to recommend this channel?
Another person blacklisted is Thrillseeker. His is the best review i have seen of this headset.
I'm surprised by the lack of VR games.
Agree Jon… 100%.. quest is value for money .. regardless of what or how much we all love apple meta is the winner today
Once developers start taking advantage of the shared environments feature, the loneliness will improve. Of course at the cost of multiple headsets though
Great review!
1 x Apple VR $ 3500. Quest 3 $ 500 x 7 = $3500 crazy.. not import apple.
The reviewer being blacklisted prior to the review does not make the review blacklisted... That is a not a transferrable trait 😄
I’m sorry you were blacklisted. You are a good man, I don’t care what Apple says about you Jon!!
Quest has had basketball games, live with courtside seats, or even switching the camera to the backboard since quest one I think
That came out around COVID from what I have read. It also does Nascar, UFC, and some other sport. Another company had NFL but they folded.
For the record your brain immerses and adjusts any screen your looking at. The rest is perspective. You don’t need goggles for that.
I’m pretty sure the negative counter is high with this one. And if he isn’t black listed, he should be
Turned off when I heard “this is an honest review” implying that everything else up until this point has been disingenuous in some way
Apple doesn’t have the balls to make this also just a conventional VR headset that works with native apps and on steam/ windows. I understand why (they want to build their own AppStore that they own and control) but I see that as the true handicap.
I have a google glass. That’s enough. 😊
Bling and more bling for their selected buyers … just look at the models. Bingo.
I'm sorry but I'd rather invest my 3500+ dollars into my retirement accounts. Great Video!
You dont have to be sorry. I dont care if you buy it or not.
I can't help but think this product feels even more ridiculous if you start imagining we already live in a simulation 😆
