Would be cool to have a motor in there attached to a little wheel that spins it so it's like a kinetic sculpture. If ya wanna get really fancy you could rig up a capacitive touch sense on it so it spins for a while after you touch it.
HA! That's a whole can of worms. Also, I actually use my office and it would be annoying to hear it spin. I like inviting people to interact with it instead. I'll often take the SOW arm off the wall to give people an idea how heavy this stuff is.
I have watched battlebots for years, but found your channel after getting into 3d printing. I never connected the two together, but love your team over the years. ❤
@@RobertCowanDIY I did! Been plugging away at it for a bit now, it's 'just' a kit bot but working on a fully custom one. Most destructive fight is here: th-cam.com/video/Qx0fH7tWiD4/w-d-xo.html
I’m embarrassed to admit I forgot you fought in BattleBots. The mount totally does Fusion justice. The California in me is screaming for a top strap so it doesn’t kill you when it jumps off the wall, but you don’t get earthquakes around your parts so it’s ok as-is.
I don't think it could jump even if it wanted to. The SOW arm has been up there for several years not and still feels as solid as the day I mounted it.
I've missed the robot combat stuff hoping you were gonna do a few more updates on Drain Bamage design or even slightly more extreme that team Caustic Creations would do a new version of Copperhead but alas that we'd see at the face offs and some in depth content about a new design for that bot 😞😞 Anyway cool little decoration it's a very worthy homage to Reese's bot.
Your comment about always pushing limits and technology also applies to the arena. We had a partial breech at our last ARC event, where a bot’s weapon got through one of the doors, but the bot itself didn’t get through thankfully. So the latest standard (for beetles) is a dual pane wall with an air gap, so we’re in the process of making a new arena. Come over and try to break it when we’re done. 😁
At the end of the video, you can see an even heavier weapon being held by the same brackets. It's been that way for several years now. I have faith in them because when used properly, they work just fine.
I subscribed to you about a year ago because of the drain bamage videos and because I was excited to see it in a fight. Do you think that fight will ever happen or have you moved on from combat robots?
It will happen, some day. There aren't many 30 pound competitions, and very few that are actually close to me. I think Norwalk is the only real competition and I might need to change some things to make it 'legal'. But it WILL happen some day.
That would be impossible since it was done in Solidworks ;-) My time lapses would also consist of me going down a wrong path, closing the file, opening a new part, and then doing that a few more times until I figure out the way I want to make it ;-)
That encraving looks good! Now I'm looking at lasers and those bastards cost quite something (dont want it to be small, power isn't needed for only PLA/ABS engraving)
I wish you'd skeletonized the pet-cf part more, always over engineer for aesthetics 😂 would've been cool if you can etch it directly, but I remember your etching video from before.
It is KINDA skeletonized, if you look at the dashed-line see-through model, there's really not a lot of blank space inside. The rods and the cutout for the weapon take up quite a bit of space. But I get you.
nasty comment a forced-perspective poster of fusion on the wall behind it would be cute, as would getting one of their horizontals and putting it on the other side of that wall.
Missed the robot content! Lovely trophy showcase, definitely deserved for the complexity and uniqueness of fusion 👏
Why did you not just mount it to a chain that you could wear around your neck for striking up conversation at the speakeasy? [engagement activated]
I have that too, but this is where it sits when I get home.
This Old Tony has the best tips, love how your mount turned out!
Thanks!
I am so pleased you made it kinetic. A fantastic tribute to a very scary battle bot, kudos.

This is a really great build, and I love the external details of the printed cradle!

Ha! Some people know me from SparkFun, some from TH-cam and some from Battlebots. It's always fun when the venn diagrams overlap.
This was outstanding!
All nice trophy mounts!
1:27 ah, lo-fi deathhum to relax & study to
PETG-CF has a nice look and feel and prints great. Sorry no nasty comment.
Indeed. Mostly the cf filaments have a nice finish. But if I had him not mistaken this is PET-CF no G.
@@kaizoor Listening back Robert clearly says PET-CF indeed.
Ha, no worries, there's always next time.
Just the right amount of engineering 👍😎👍
I think so ;-)
Please bring back the robot combat content, it was always so fire!!
Hah. I just wish it got the same amount of views. It's a MUCH smaller audience unfortunately.
Always love your bot content - Sgt Cuddles was the first video series to make me think that maybe I could do this too.
Thanks for the kind words - you can absolutely build a battlebot!

Curious why you printed it in the orientation you did, as I would think you'd want the layers going parallel to the load, no?

Oh for sure! As the robots get more powerful, so does the arena.
looks great and i like the idea with the rods.
Robert Cowan combat robot video? Instant click!
Ha! I wish more of the internet was like this.
You have a lot of faith in drywall anchors, I would be so sketched out. End result looks great though!

I would recommend aligning the screw drives (slots). It will clean up the faceplate appearance. Love the design. Overengineering FTW :)
Hum, I kinda like the small M3 phillips. I kinda hate slotted screws. Allen would be my preferred though.
@RobertCowanDIY what I meant is to get them aligned. Like they are +++ not +x+ for example. Totally agree Allen would fit nicely with the aesthetics;)
A time lapse of the fusion 360 design would be neat.
That would be impossible since it was done in Solidworks ;-) My time lapses would also consist of me going down a wrong path, closing the file, opening a new part, and then doing that a few more times until I figure out the way I want to make it ;-)
Having that on the wall above me would exacerbate my anxiety.
See the SOW arm opposite this. It's been there for a few years now. It will be just fine.
How is the creep in that CF PET material?
Extremely low. There is 'some', but I've done something like this using PLA and it's been fine after a few years.
That encraving looks good! Now I'm looking at lasers and those bastards cost quite something (dont want it to be small, power isn't needed for only PLA/ABS engraving)
Some companies are coming out with 2W IR lasers which are quite a bit cheaper.
It would be perfect if the weapon had a motor to spin it, like a small motor transfering movement just like the bearings
Ha, you're not the first to suggest this. I really don't want it moving on its own.
I hope that this video is not a farewell to combat robotics, it was always interesting to see your designs, iterations and concepts
Geil!!
turned out awesome, I would design it the same way :)
thanks!
7:20 Thanos in the machine shop.
The world IS a bit overpopulated...
I'm sure the weakest part of the mount is the drywall it's mounted to.
For sure. Moving the mount by hand flexes the drywall. It will be just fine.
Love the holder and mount. Office setup is great. I don't have any nasty comments but if you need one.... Poop
HOW DARE YOU!
Would you compete again? Or time poor?
Absolutely time poor. I tend to go through phases every few years. I'm just in a different phase right now.
Love from your biggest fan! Loved it!
Secret face reveal in the mirror of the final shot!!!
Hehe. PLENTY of people have seen my face.

no action shots of the bot in battle?
Search YT, Discovery owns that footage.
I'm not sure this was over engineered enough.
I see no potential for spontaneous combustion.
HAHA. Son of Hibachi.
Shame. Shoulda smeared a bunch of Reese's cups all over it.
Give it time.
nasty comment

Awww, I was waiting for an actual nasty comment :-(
Nasty comment... think think think....!!!! OLD USED GREASE!!!!
Also, overengineered? Go ham on that thing! Put a little motor inside the mount to slowly spin it around. :)
