famu directors are trying to follow tradition, but those who started the tradition would have been giving them advice on how to switch it up slightly. while tradition is great do what makes you stand out in any situation. slight changes should be made. especially for tunes when in the stands you guys sound great but where is the 400 degrees of 2022 ??? like that song that just hits
JSU’s book contains just as many “marches” as FAMU. Both bands have musicality. We aren’t gonna sit here and disrespect Thee Boom and say they aren’t true musicians… check the receipts on TH-cam. The energy and power from JSU is undeniable. FAMU was good too… just, different.
We come in Da Boom learning 7 marches starting off band camp. Them Basses, Barnum and Bailey, King Cotton, Rolling Thunder, In Storm and Sunshine, Purple Carnival, Stars and Stripes Forever.

Yep. The musical illiterate and ignorant now control the scene, as evidenced by most comments here. Most of these bands don't sound like there is any higher learning taking place, even though they represent a university. That cancer started back in the early 90s and many of the current HBCU band directors are products of that thinking and playing. It started with most bands having their own sound. Then in the 90s, bands incrementally started to imitate Southern's style of play, when in reality, you will never out-do Southern on their grounds. Yet, bands still try it. Jackson used to have their own sound, and sounded more musical than the Union Pacific train sound they produce today. Nowadays, louder and higher are better, with no regard to tone. Baritones sounding like a honking carnival ride and destroying the band balance, etc. Very few are interested in OUTPLAYING the other band. Then you wonder why your concert band, jazz band, and small ensembles sound like crap, when you don't practice producing good tone, balance and intonation until January, if ever. You can't turn it on and off. You must build upon it and practice it year round! I welcome the musicality of FAMU and BCU to the SWAC.
Famu sound sloppy and people just ok with it 😑 and the marches excuse is dead. JSU is known for the marches and sound damn good on them. 99 1/2 just keep living off old tradition. That won't save you in the SWAC.
Famu book is actually pretty solid but song choice wasn’t matching what JSU was dishing out but in terms of “adding watts” they are fine where they are Jsu is that loud because they sacrifice tuning, phrasing, and just overall musicality to be that loud schools like famu and cookman give you both. Don’t get me wrong though I appreciate both styles.

Makes sense our song selection in the 0 Quarter. Why would we play the depth of our music repertoire so early when nobody is there to hear it? We still sounded better and cleaner with what was played anyway.

JSU is loud, but they aren't clear. The sound is muffled and very cloudy. Check the TH-cam footage of Bama St. Quality at it's best
