I was always under the impression that the pure hearts were actual hearts belonging to unique individuals who were possibly slayed by the dark enemies (considering the exceptional mention on their evil nature, their lock up in the flopside trial pits, and their intense levels of power). And the ancients either stumbled upon or knew these ancients and decided to utilize and revitalize the “pure hearts” as there was still the power of purity in them.
