How I Painted a Portrait and a Fairytale Composition. Painting Childhood. Portrait Commission.

  • This painting was commissioned by Anthony DeStefano (Bestselling Author of Children's Books).
    I leave you with the testimonial Anthony DeStefano wrote about the painting:
    My goddaughter is turning 4 years old. I love her very much, and wanted to give her and her family a birthday present that would capture not only her personality- which is bursting with joy and exuberance- but also the unique time of life she is living. So I started searching for the right artist- someone who could realistically portray the way she looks now, but at the same time symbolically and allegorically represent the “idea” of childhood. This was no small ambition- to commission a painting of Childhood, itself! After looking for a long time, I finally found the perfect artist. Cesar Santos is a Master of painting, in the old, classic sense of the word. He has a brilliant, Renaissance mind to match his blazing talent. He imagined my goddaughter in a fairytale-nature setting, with her two adoring dogs staring up at her, as if she were the center of the universe (which, of course, all children are at that age). He painted the River of Life at her feet, and the pages of the Book of Life being swept up into a wind that carries all children away from their innocent childhoods towards youth and adulthood so terribly quickly. And by including the flowers, the open fields, the caterpillar and the butterflies (beautiful images of metamorphosis), the ducks flying in the air, and finally, the vegetable/pumpkin patch- growing too, into the shape of a Cathedral- he provided us with the whole story of the hope of humanity: that our children will be blessed with a sacred, joyful, magical childhood- but that they will then grow up into magnificent human beings- as magnificent as the Duomo Cathedral in Florence. I say again, Cesar Santos is a Master!

    So cool to see how you put symbolism into a realistic painting. Very cool! I also want to try the green underpainting! I can see how that would give a pleasant complimentary harmony to the skin tones.

      Dont forget that he used the green undertone because it's a outdoor scenery full of greens around. It wouldnt work much indoors

      @@DannySabraArt Because the light and things around the object are not green indoors. You can try but I think it wont look nice as if you use a grisaille or the like

      @@relaxationpeacefulmusic6296 Isn't the underpainting acting as a complimentary color scheme to the reds in the skin tones (underneath the transparent reds?) rather than opaquely reflecting light? I believe he did the same technique in one of his other recent videos and it wasn't an outdoor setting.

    what do you think, about the use of projector, for help to drawing ?

    • @lucygray6162
      @lucygray6162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He covers that in an interview in his Streamline Art video on portraits. If I may paraphrase, he is honest (and correct) that if you can't draw, your fine art will be limited. I personally believe that if a technique helps, use it, but don't let it become another problem. Projectors are not highly regarded for many reasons.
      Practice sketching what you have available in your home, your yard, a park, etc. You'll learn faster. And don't beat yourself up. Most of us spent semesters in anatomy classes, and had to help pay for live models. Even for prodigies like Santos, art is an ongoing process. Good luck to you.

    • @prazerjoao
      @prazerjoao 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Are terrible TO YOU (and this it's ok). Art it's not about please any specific person outside the artist itself, and always will resonate to someone.
      I bet that hurt your soul it's not a big concern.

    • @musa5950
      @musa5950 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prazerjoao I respect his sense of discipline, and he clearly has a deep love for the craft. Unfortunately, it looks like our dear Cesar got seduced a bit too much by the realism of his pieces. The way I see it, once a piece is done, it's not up to the artist to decide who will like or dislike his art. Whether it resonates with someone or not is also irrelevant since there are many awful artworks, for example, enjoyed by many people (or many great artworks enjoyed by awful people). We should not forget the importance of delving into the essence of a subject rather than being distracted by its surface qualities.
