      Yeah, also feel like Jimmy understood Chuck a little bit more at that point, the honorable soldier/advocat with strong sense of justice who does everything by the book, the soldier blamed Jimmy the same way Chuck used to do for being 'dishonorable'.

    • @johnrex9612

      After I've liked -> hated Chuck I've started to like him again. If you think about it Chuck was playing fair and he was being treated like a fool by Jimmy (for example Jimmy promised Chuck not to make him look like a fool again, what he did on several ocasions). So I loved the scene when he treated soldier who has no history with him like Chuck. Epic

      It also felt like his thankfulness of his service was his closing sentiment in their argument. The captain is a reality check that not only Jimmy, but the audience needed to hear. So long into the story, we have got into liking Jimmyto the extent that we justify most of the things he does, and the ones we don't agree with we let it slide because we admire how creative Jimmy is into creating a solution for it.
    But the Captain goes directly to the issue. Jimmy does what he does, and continues doing it because in the end he gets away with it. But each time this happens, he goes deeper and deeper into the issue. And what Jimmy is unable to see (and tries to ignore it), is that there will be a point of no return, and for as deep as he goes, it will be worse for him in the end.

    • @minzblatt
      @minzblatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      What is that point of no return? There is always time for repentance and coming good as long as you're not in the wake of dying. That should be known by everyone religious or not. There is a 2nd chance. God is all-forgiving. And if you don't believe in God, you should forgive yourself after repenting. And come clean.

    • @Scrubbles94
      @Scrubbles94 2 ปีที่แล้ว +182

      @@minzblatt It's not that he can't eventually accept himself, but I'm talking about his literal actions. Once you do something, there's no way to undone it... and those things pile up. And there will come a point in which that pile will be to big to just "move on" from it.

      I think there has always been this undercurrent of Jimmy feeling guilt and shame simmering somewhere deep down, and wanting to get caught in order to face a reckoning for everything he has done and to finally drop that guilt off his shoulders. I think his choices in the finale confirm that, but there were hints of it even before. When he decides to do the mall heist, when he goes back to the house of the guy with cancer, etc. It's like there are two sides of him battling each other: one wanting to get caught, and another trying to weasel his way out of any situation, like a challenge. When he says "make me" the first time, it almost sounds sincere. Like it's the Jimmy who wants to get caught shines through for a moment, before the other Jimmy takes over again, who loves the thrill of this game, happy to throw down

But _this_ kind of stuff, very few shows do scenes like this. Most shows would play the whole air base scam as a one-off gag. For some people, it's hard to gauge how shady they know themselves to be when they deal with other shady people. When you deal with low-lifes, there are so many shades of grey that it becomes harder to have any self-awareness about just how bad you have become. Compared to the people Saul deals with, he is a lighter shade of gray than those he deals with, therefore (in his mind), he sits higher up on the sh*t heap than the darker characters he deals with. Because of that, he has deluded himself into thinking that despite his lies and trickery, he still has integrity. It's only when he deals with straight-arrows, and people with wholly intact, unshakeable integrity, that he ends up seeing himself as he really is. When he is hit with the bright, glaring, spotlight of truth from guys like this, (I believe) its only then that he sees himself for what he really is, which is the shady, conniving, morally questionable con-man that he is. it is during moments like this that he realizes that although he is not completely "dirty", and although he does sit at the top of the sh*t heap, it is still a sh*t heap, and it something that he is still a part of, and that his ideas of self-integrity and of being morally righteous are delusions at best.

The whole point of the show is that good people do get taken by people like Jimmy and it happens often, but those people will not end up where Jimmy did because the wheel does indeed turn.
      And there are those who never pay for their crimes and deceptions. But this is rare. Because it's not about karma, morality, or any of that made up nonsense. Trusting people is fine, and questioning the validity of a veteran in wheelchairs is of course the last thing a soldier would do, but he should have taken responsibility for that if not by taking the blame, than by at least not going after jimmy to threat to sue. Jimmy did a bad thing, and the captain had every reason to be mad and would be right to condemn him, but taking responsibility would be him acknowledging that he too was responsible for this happening by not checking info, and while demanding jimmy to take the ad down, not go and threaten him with a lawsuit like it was only jimmy’s fault. I sympathize with the captain a lot, and thought less of jimmy because he didn’t even own up to his deception, and also agree that incompetence is a strong word, maybe even not correct for this situation, but the captain was a bit too careless, and placed the blame solely on jimmy, which can show a lacking in his character.

    Is it just me, or this is like one of the very few dialogues in TV shows that actually feels natural? Im not talking about the script, but about the directing and acting of how the characters on screen argue in the same awkward way people do in real life, like interrupting one another, trying to say the same thing 3 or 4 times because you keep getting interrupted, talking all clumsy and in poor diction because you're really angry and trying to make a point. I really feel like this scene specifically from this show nailed that in a way I haven't seen anywhere else.

      Nah, it's not just you, it's pretty natural acting.

    Jimmy is so obsessed with the ends justifying the means he fails to understand that people just don’t like being deceived.

    i haven't seen this show, only watched clips here on the ol' youtube, but this scene, the dialogue and interpersonal dynamics in it, has to be the best in the show

    I like how Jimmy goes off when the air force captain says “Allways the same” the same thing chuck would tell jimmy

    "Ambulance-chasing piece of shit", the second time in the series that Saul has received this exact same insult. The first time was in Season 1 by the young detective from Philadelphia.

    Meanwhile, all the Captain really wanted was a sincere apology. If he did it right up front, he probably wouldn't even insist on taking down that ad.
