Hey mate, really enjoying your videos. Have you thought about making one about what it's like to own a car and drive in Japan? I think that could be interesting.
I actually have a couple of videos about that. The one about driving around Japan is quite old and some of my feelings have changed since then, so maybe I could update that. I then have two one year ownership update videos about my Mazda MX-5.
I'm moving to Japan in about six months, and this is the car I'll be getting. I've been wanting this car since it first released, when I was ten years old. I never got one here in the US, because I've always planned to move to jp, so I'm super excited to finally pull the trigger on it once I'm there. The only thing that worries me is the parking costs in Tokyo. I thought about getting a GR86 instead, because it's the newer, better car. But I just love the way the gen 1 car looks. Also, you can get a high trim, facelift GT86 for very cheap in Japan, compared to here in the US.
Despite getting a Miata instead of the GT86, I still really like the GT86, especially the looks. I would definitely be worried about the parking costs, unless you're being paid well. 20,000 yen a month is already on the cheap side and that's usually with your car out in the open on the edge of town. If you want cover or want to be in central Tokyo... that price can go up by multitudes =/
Great video ,I didn't know a 86 lite existed. On the matter of your shortlist, I know you're firmly in Mazda's corner but based on your requirements you could take another look at the Suzuki Swift Sport. It's practical, it's fun ,it's a manual,it's easy to live with,it's frugal and it probably won't get you in trouble when you put it through its paces on a mountain road. Regardless of what you choose keep doing what you're doing, your viewpoint on vehicles is refreshing. Btw, you weren't wrong in your criticism of the Raize, I'll leave it at that😉.
Thanks for your support! By 86 lite, are you referring to the super base trim models meant for tuning companies to mod like crazy? I do want to take a look at the previous generation Swift Sport with the naturally aspirated engine, but those are hard to track down for rental right now. They're fairly cheap and plentiful on the used market here which makes them tempting. I wasn't in love with the current gen Swift Sport because the driving position and ergonomics was a bit awkward and it had the same issue as the GT86 where it was too capable, so it wasn't as playful and fun around the mountains at legal speeds. I also want to try an NC MX-5 again because they're significantly cheaper to buy.
Ok cool. I was saying 86 lite not only in terms of trim but where it sits in Toyota's model range. I agree that the previous gen swift sport was quite good, know a couple people with them and they say it's fun to drive but not so great on gas. If you can't find one maybe you can find a Vitara. In some markets the base trim comes with the same engine in the previous gen swift sport(albiet tuned for fuel efficiency rather than hooning around). The vitara itself isn't a sedate vehicle either and it comes in a manual or auto with paddle shifters.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Technically yes it's a rental, but I got the car through a peer-to-peer car sharing app, so it's a privately owned vehicle and not something from a rental agency.
I don't have access to auction pricing for cars, so I'm not sure. Car auction prices usually do not contain all the various taxes and road legal certification checks, so if you see a cheap "auction price" be aware you may need to tack on a few hundred thousand yen on top of that before you can get it on the road. Japan has had rapidly rising used car prices recently so expect to pay over 2 million yen for a decent post facelift 86.
@@534tgrg6yrtgdf Oh! Mega Web! Yeah it's in a shopping mall in Odaiba in Tokyo. I've been there quite a few times. It was fun to sit in all the different Toyota models. I was driven around the test track by a racing driver in a modified Toyota Vitz a several years back at an event. It's sad to hear it's closed now =(

Great review. Is it a rental car?

How much do these sell for at auction in Japan? moving on spouse visa in November and would like one but will definitely boost it(SC)

@@4speedauto yep same in germany, doesnt matter the car used cars are getting so expensive
Which trim is this ?
I think it was a 2019 "GT" trim model, but it may well be the"GT Limited."
How much is gas in Japan?
It's currently over 170 yen per liter. Under normal non-messed up exchange rates, it's equal to about $6.50 a gallon in the US.
Steering is more numb in Mazda though. 86 is more confidence inspiring. Mazda is quieter I think? 86 is really noisy with its engine.
That about sums it up. I think the lighter weight of the Mazda make it feel more playful too.
Can you go to Toyota world to have a tour there?
I didn't know there was a Toyota World. I've visited the museum near their headquarters before if that counts.
@@4speedauto maybe it’s called Toyota mega web. It’s on an island? Has a test track where you can go 5 mile per hour? 😝 oh. It’s closed for good now.

Like a hard ride. 😝😝😝
I'm glad you got the joke, because quite a few people haven't gotten the subtle jokes I've been dropping in my other videos.
Very very sneaky
I'm not sure sports car is for you.
I agree.
