I've watched a number of these videos about Cairo and find them very intriguing. I'm also amazed that even though there are supposedly 1700 people still living there I almost never seen any people. A few cars now and then but no people.
I have been several times to Cairo, and while I intentionally avoid filming people, truthfully, I rarely see anyone there except those passing in cars like you mentioned. But the few people I have met there have been quite friendly and welcoming.
Glad I found your channel. I've always been fascinated with old building architecture especially in the Midwest states and river towns. I'm a photographer myself and would love to start doing this as well. Thanks again for these videos and keep them coming!!😊😊

I lived in Cairo from 1979-1988 as the Lutheran pastor. Population then was 6,500, and the town was still alive. I'm grateful you're documenting the decay, which has merged with art. Some of the best people in the world lived -- and still live -- in Cairo, Illinois. Just ask Monica, the librarian of the Cairo Public Library!
Yes, it's still a lived-in place and the residents are doing the best they can. Everyone I've met is very friendly. And they have one of the best restaurants in Cairo that I've ever encountered on my road trips!
By the way, thank you for the positive remarks -- videos like this sometimes attract negativity from people with their own agendas.

Love your photography of Cairo,was hoping to see a old fire apparatus abandoned in that old station. Hope with the new riverport being built,the city will be revived as well and some of those old buildings can be saved.

Another good video, Keith. Your comments about the position of the street lamp in the image is a good one. I had someone ask me once " are you looking through the viewfinder or seeing through the viewfinder?" I am constantly reminding myself to do this very thing...with mixed results !!!! Stay safe...
I think I make mistakes like this when I use the back of the camera rather than the viewfinder. Causes me to miss finer points

It's completely hollow on the inside, from roof to entrance. Only thing left is the exterior and the signage.

If I’m not mistaken there’s only 2 River Town/City still “exist” except every River Town/City in Illinois pretty much dried up & blew away with only a few people still living in town. It’s actually more re like 1 1/2 towns Paducah,Kentucky & the 1/2 town is Wickliffe mainly because Barges actually the Toeboats are still stopping & docking up there
The whole area has definitely seen better days! Makes it a good place for me to go shooting photos though. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@Keithdotson Well if you make it to Paducah Downtown, Lower Town Flood Wall is all the same place just to many dam names lol
The actual Flood Wall always has really hand painted murals on each flood panel, A lot of the old huge houses have been or are in the process of being restored. Also make sure you check out the Old Ervin Cobb Hotel 1st floor it’s on 6th & Broadway. The old hotel is now apartments but they left the 1st floor alone & can be rented out for weddings & stuff.

I agree, and I researched it online but unfortunately, I couldn't find anything. I'm sure someone could learn more in the library and archives in Cairo.
Anybody know if there's any tunnels underneath those old mansions?

I watched the first visit video first. I see why you like your second images better for black and white. But, I think the harsh light fits the story of this town's demise. Either way, loved both videos. Maybe I'll do a road trip next summer and visit this place. It's a bit far from Pennsylvania, but I'll include some other places as well. Thanks again for the video. Question: Noticed you have a 3 Legged Thing Ellie L Bracket on your camera. Is it working well for you? Thinking of getting one for my X-T3.
You make a good point about the harsh light! Hey if you can manage the trip, it's well worth a visit. There's much more to see than pictured in either of my videos, plus there are several other small towns in the vicinity with ruins or historic architecture, and other points of interest (see my video about the Cave in Rock).
About that L bracket -- in my opinion it's a great and affordable tool. No regrets on the purchase or on skipping the much pricier options. Thanks for watching!
Fascinating video, Keith! I noticed the is a sign saying "Historic Downtown Cairo". Do you think the town is trying to preserve any of the old buildings or will it eventually be open lots?
