    Awesome vid man, we live in Scotland just picked up our first Canadian Canoe for the family with our kids 6&8. Looking forward to getting out to the Lochs for some adventure and living life to the full after Covid. Will go back and check your vids , loving the vid when your wee one was still in the beginner chair ! We pushed the boat out travelling but loved that footage. Good times ! James, Ayrshire

    What a great wonderful and adventures childhood you provide. Nice BC area which I went through more than 35y ago. Ours was in and along the small river running through our little village, the nearby forrest areas and playing soccer on the streets and when kicked of than on the farm land with cos around. Very dangerous and no sign of parents around. Today its different, to many helicopters(parents) around every time.

    What age do you think is appropriate for little kids to join a whitewater canoe trip? Class I-II. I feel good about my skills, but I suppose I worry about them being unpredictable and maybe standing up where a bump would toss them out. So maybe the answer is only get on a river they are safe to swim on? We've got a pipe dream to take our family of 4 (currently 1.5 and 3.5 y/o) down the 10-day/100-mile Allagash in Maine. We've been doing practice trips on our local lake/river, but haven't gotten the kids on any of the river yet. My wife had a major climbing accident 10 years ago and is a little gun shy about outdoor risks now, understandably. Love your channel and definitely find it inspiring. You've probably read "Cradle to Canoe" but if you haven't you should.; big role model for us and seems to jive with your approach. Thanks for the effort on your content production, I hope you can do this as long as you want to.

      There’s no set age to start. Out west on continuous rivers I went with a raft for river trips - as they are more stable and like a big play pen. But we also did some whitewater/moving water canoeing. PFDs are a must, having the right skills and at least one other skilled boat is pretty key. I never want my kids to have an intense negative experience as it can set them back, so I am sure to choose the right river and act accordingly. They only time I’ve dumped my kids is when they all shifted into the stern of a canoe while I was leaning over catching minnows on a lake for them with a net. That’s a spring 9 C degree morning I’ll never forget! 😅

      @@ThatMountainLife Thanks so much for the reply. Keep up the awesome content. I've recently gotten my kids to sometimes be willing (if they're insisting on screen time and we're throwing in the towel) to agree to watch your family's videos instead of their usual fair. That's high toddler praise, as you know. Thanks again.

    What beautiful water to swim and paddle in. We're doing a trip from Ontario to Canmore in September with two young kids and are excited to show them the mountains. Question, what is the tent that your family uses?

    Hi! We are planning on canoing Slocan Lake with our 18 month old this July. I'm having a hard time finding any detailed maps. Do you have any recommendations for maps or guide books of the area with details on campgrounds and water sources? Thanks for making this video, it's been very inspiring to us!

    • @ThatMountainLife
      @ThatMountainLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, you could take a picture of the map at Slocan beach and be pretty good to go. We have never used a map other than the BC backcountry road map book. The lake is 1.5-2km wide the whole way with 2 towns on the east shore.
      The sites on the west shore are awesome and they are all mostly 1-2.5 hours apart from each other.

      @@ThatMountainLife We just got back from 5 nights on Slocan! Stayed at Evans, Mossy Creek, and Nemo. It was a really incredible trip, thank you so much for this inspirational video, we had an amazing time! I ended up getting a map in PDF form by emailing the Slocan Chamber of Commerce. We installed a little Captain's wheel for our toddler on one of the thwarts and it kept him happy some of the time.

      It’s a Prospector 17 model from Esquif canoes. And it’s either 16.5 or 17.5 feet - I can’t recall exactly. Hope that helps.

    Hey looking to get into canoeing with 3 kids myself. Any advice on canoes that are good for that?

    • @ThatMountainLife
      @ThatMountainLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’ll likely want a larger one! Something in the 19-20 foot range - which makes it harder to carry if needing to portage something. We are on our last year of all fitting into our 17’6 foot prospector canoe. It is possible to use a more standard size while they are younger and if you pack smart. But for a longer canoe trip (over 6-7 days) we now need a bigger canoe or a kayak in addition too.
