I have tried it out myself, and yes the Quest 3 I have is just better in terms of refresh rate (at least when I tried shaking my head) and FOV. So I know what you both mean.

... And yet it's still absolute fucking TRASH compared to Meta's Codec Avatars (even the stripped down version using a very similar iPhone powered quick & dirty face scan that they showed off at Connect w/ Quest Pro a few years back). You can tell which has been in development for over a decade and which is a relatively recent project. 🤷 Meta realizes this tech doesn't make sense to actually launch to the public until they can deliver their mind-melting full-fat tethered PC powered version shown off most recently in Lex Friedman's 2nd Mark Zuckerberg interview fully on standalone (hopefully w/ late 2025's co-designed w/ LG Quest Pro 2). And this is because what they could ship now, while basically guaranteed to be better than Apple's current version of Personas (even according to where Codec Avatars was w/ the iPhone scan + Quest Pro powered Connect demo from literally multiple years ago), would still be uncanny and uncomfortable at best or do some level of well poisoning at worst (as Apple's very poorly received Personas are currently doing now).
I've heard several folks including Mike say the Apple Vision Pro is like owning the best TV you've ever seen. As a VR gamer and content consumer, that makes me so excited for the future of VR and microOLED headsets, of which we can be confident that several are in the works presently. 🤩
7:28 every review I've seen until this one has stated the charging cable can't be removed from the battery. thank you for including this shot to demonstrate it really can be removed!
Thank you Mike for taking the time to review the Apple Vision Pro. Like others have commented, while others are respected good to see an actual VR enthusiast review it. Not someone caught up in the Apple hype. I heard you mentioned things no one else has because they're reviewing Apple and not the headset. Thank you
Your persona in my opinion is one of the best I've seen, it looks like you looking into a foggy bathroom mirror. But it captured a near similarity especially the definitions in your face.
Just watched this video on the Vision Pro and it was amazing. Review is very accurate - feel the same way: incredible as a new platform, but not for gaming
Great video. One of the most fascinating aspects of watching many Vision Pro reviews has been the reaction of professional online personalities to their own “personal”. They have been universally panned while to me, the viewer they’re not bad at all. They might not look exactly like you but they capture your facial expressions and convey emotions well. I think they are good enough for professional calls.
Sadly it's Bradley thought it was great, and several others who originally thought it was weird got used to it like MKBHD has said. I think if they can capture hair better, especially longer hair, it would be really really good.
@@CGingerbreadman yeah, there are definitely exceptions like out of 30 maybe 2 or 3 liked it straight away. Lol, Bradley even disagreed with people trying to talk smack about his persona. It IS the hair along with that smooth texture that’s unnatural but once I got past the initial “uncanny valley” feeling I was very impressed by how well it captured movement and expressions.
I was wondering how the "Immersive" 3D video captured on the Vision looks compared to video captured on the iPhone 15? Massively better, slightly better?
Thank you mate! Great channel btw, I’ve watched a lot of your videos. I’m going to be hosting a private event in London next week. You’re welcome to come and try it.
This is the review I've been waiting for. While others might default to some tech reviews or influencer opinions. I wanted to hear this information from a man who is the king of VR.
I tried the Apple Vision Pro and Loved it. It's intuitive and easy to use. I like the standard strap. it's soft and comfortable (as comfortable as a headset can be). I will be buying one. I am patient so it will be version II. Not sure if it was an editing error or what, but near 9:16 time frame, there was a lot of stuttering of this video. The headset wasn't lagging or chopping that was from filming or something else. The headset never stuttered while I used it. Fluid and smooth the entire time.
Yay, I was waiting for this review. Other reviews are mostly from people who haven't worn a headset before and all be like "OMG this is awesome, this is the future, we're all be wearing this 5 years from now!" Yeah right...
its so surreal to see this headset finally in the hands of the (rich US) public great to hear this from a XR user's perspective, I can't wait to see where this goes in the future!
I have tried the video you shot with your iPhone 15 using special video. Aside from the screen quality, how different is it to watch a spatial video on the Quest 3 vs. Apple Vision Pro, especially your video( as your video is the only special video I have tried) ?
The last headset I tried was the PSVR1, so even a Quest 3 would seem super sharp to me. As far as the feedback goes, Apple should make dual rings that you could wear on a finger on each hand. The rings could give vibration feedback to touch/textures without violating the hand input philosophy.
i think the fact that the quick menue in my meta Q3 is pixelated although they know the usecase and can calculate how closely people look at it is proof enough that they underdeliver on that level to make the apple device pop more.
Ive been waiting for someone who is into consumer VR headsets to do a review of this and so I really appreciate you making this. Ive been following your stuff for a bit and when I saw you did a review I clicked immediately. Great review. Thanks.
Cheeky "like" done Mike! You've been my go-to source for the latest and greatest in XR/VR since 2017, capturing my interest when I first delved into the immersive world of VR. Your consistently insightful reports keep me well-informed about the cutting-edge developments and anticipated releases in this dynamic field. Many thanks for your dedication, and have a safe journey back home. By the way, your canine companion is absolutely adorable-Bow Wow!
Everyone is talking about the Apple Vision Pro in the VR community, but the really big news nobody is mentioning is the Metro Awakening VR game coming up. Metro is a popular franchise, and that game coming to VR, especially if it's VR exclusive, will probably be almost as big of a deal as Half-Life: Alyx, assuming reviews are good.
Arizona sunshine 2 was 50 bucks for 5 hours gameplay. Hope it isn't built with quest 3 in mind and pcvr and psvr2 get the same low polygons ,less fog but upgraded textures. Games developers don't have the freedom for creativity if the lowest console can't run it. So i don't expect much of iy. But i hope i am so wrong. But half life alyx isn't built with android vr in mind and it shows..maybe quest 6 can run it but at that time half life alyx is old school
Finally a reviewer who thought exactly what I thought down to the gameplay and who it for I just don’t see the average person having much use for this unless of your developer making games for us the consumers in the future and then Apple will definitely need controllers because you’re not playing games with just your hands you will need controllers And like I said in another comment, I’m sure with Vision Pro two they’ll have controller options for another thousand dollars knowing apple
Mike, this is one of the best Apple Vision Pro first impression videos. I absolutely love this clear consise, informative and very well put together conclusions. I've tried 4 or 5 VR headsets, so I know enough about what you are saying and what I've heard from others that all your opinions are great ones. The persona is an interesting one. Personally I don't find it too bad, but that's probably coming from a technology view point as I work in IT. However I can see in a short future with just a small improvement this being socially acceptable, it's just so new though. 👍
Great content as always! The Apple Vision Pro has definitely stirred up interest in VR. However, considering the Quest 3 might be a more economical choice for many, I’d appreciate an updated comparison between the Quest 3 and Vision Pro. Beyond gaming, I’m particularly interested in the productivity functionalities of the Quest 3. Could you delve into this aspect in a future video?
The reason the FOB is so much shorter vertically is the 1.4 inch micro OLED displays. It’s not their small lenses because you can see the edges of the display if you get close enough but these are the largest micro lets out on the market right now.
Thanks for the explanation! No matter how good the resolution is, having such bad FOVs compromises the usability of the device so dramatically compared to the Quest 3 that I can't believe that Apple would waste $1000 on displays that are so inadequate!
@@stephenbard1590 100% agree with you! I have try both the Apple Vision And Quest 3 and watching moving is much better on Quest 2 and Quest 3. Because you feel like you are watching in a huge iMax. And the Apple Vision Pro is like a small movie screen showing imax. I think is is a waste of money because the resolution is not that much higher than the quest 3.
I have heard this term "primarily for app developers or early adopters" quite disturbingly for the Quest Pro too. We all know what happened with that headset by now (discontinued). So I am eager to see how this headset will play along. In my opinion this is just another test case for experimental features. But I really hope this pushes VR tech in general so maybe we get some serious new upgrades from Meta and Valve in the future.
@@SINfromPLIt is still supported, but discontinued as in they won't order new parts. So once Meta has used up their current inventory, production will end.
been seeing a lot of comments from "VR enthusiast" in many about AVP videos in their comment section that doesn't even buy AVP and keep trashing on it with no reason whatsoever. so this is the only review from a VR enthusiast that I trust.
If you don't wear lens inserts and want as large of a FOV as possible, get a light seal with a 1 in the second position of the number. So a 11,21, or 31. The first part of number is basically narrow, medium, and wide for your face. The 2nd number is depth with 1 putting your eyes closest to the lenses and 9 being the farthest away (smallest FOV). The last part is bridge, which is W or N for wide or narrow where your nose goes.
As a layman but still an Apple fanboy with multiple devices within my household I’m still satisfied with my quest 2 yes I’ve not upgraded to the 3 as watching movies etc on big screen and native Netflix Amazon Disney apps are still good enough for me and don’t justify the price tag of the AVP, I’m still not sold on MR /AR but your review I think is spot on especially the term “laptop for your face”
Apple straight out lied about Spatial Video. Spatial video in the Vision Pro is just standard VR180 however in their adverts they show people moving their heads and peering around the people in the foreground. As if the video's are light field reproductions which they are not. Moving the headset with Vision Pro just moves the entire scene with your head. Additionally it appears that you can also record VR180 (spatial videos) with the Meta Quest 3, after some fooling around.
I haven't seen any indication that there is a magnifier option like we have on our iPhones. It would be amazing to be able to park a schematic and a board layout next to a board on my bench, bring up the oscilloscope from my laptop, and have a magnifier loop to accurately probe test points. Currently, it takes two computers and a real magnifier.
You are the first to admit the passthrough, though leaps ahead of the competition, was incredibly disappointing. We were all expecting looking out a clear window, not a tad bit grainy tinted window.
Honestly, the small clip of that deconstructed animated heart is the exact thing I feel like the aVP will get development wise that PCVR and Meta won't. I would've killed for those type of teaching tools in med school.
Apple should add optional manual controls, gaming would be much more viable that way. Just like a touchpad being enough for normal tasks but a mouse being needed for gaming.
Once I learned the operation I was good. However the fov, pass thru blur and the weight is a bit of a problem (my only gripes but pretty big ones). The Disney movies are incredible. One I learned to use safari instead of apps it became more of what I expected. In terms of games and VR, meta is better.
Do you need to book an appointment for a demo or do you just walk in and wait? What's the wait like if there is one? No idea how this works. Would have to fly from the UK for a trip. Would do other things while there of course.
Would love to know how my gigapixel images would look and feel in the headset. Of course only in a browser because there is no Steam support, where I have a small gallery of these images. But the price tag is too expensive to just have a look and I don't want to develop an app yet for Apple (or better pay for developing a custom App). But it looks like the second or third generation I have to buy even when I'm owning no Apple device myself yet.
Pretty amazing that we now have tech that’s significantly better than what was envisioned in futuristic sci-fi movies from just a decade or two ago (i.e. Spacial video “memories” from Minority Report) .. Can’t wait to get a VP.
Can you log in with a uk iCloud account to get access to photo's mail messages etc? Accepting that you won't have access to the App Store. Or even UK iCloud with separate US App Store account.
I’m currently logged into a US account so I can access the Vision Pro AppStore. I still have access to my mail, I used AirDrop to transfer some photos and spatial videos. I can log into Disney+ with my UK account and that works. I used a US gift card to activate Apple Arcade for a few Vision Pro games like Synth Riders and Fruit Ninja []-)
Same thoughts. I’d like 1 but sense it’s going to require a whole new US account and won’t be able to use the UK account as family sharing setup etc. How would you access uk iCloud emails with a different US account?
@@VirtualRealityOasis thanks for the extra info - appreciate all the VR reviews you've done, and especially this AVP commentary - cheers Mike! I've been watching dozens of AVP reviews, and browsing all the comments on this video to glean more details about using the AVP outside of the US. I'm off to California next week and want to pick one up, but wasn't sure how it will work once back in UK and using UK accounts on my Mac/iPhone/iPad. - will it connect to a MacBook on a different apple account, or will I need to log into a US account on the Mac too? - after setup with US account, and installed required apps, can you switch to a UK account at all? (just without App Store access) My hopes are to remain in AVP in UK account, and have continuity/messages/photos/etc working with my other Apple devices? I've lived in Canada and UK, and had to get a CA Apple account to install a few local apps, but then was able to stay logged into my UK account the rest of the time, and still used all the CA-app-store-only apps. Just needed to enter CA account details any time an app needed an update.
How did you like New York? Will you have any issues with the AVP when you get back to your home? Do you have any clue what the killer app will be for this device?
Do you think eventually they might allow use of 3rd party controllers like Quest ones or trackers or do you think it is too much for apple to allow? Or is it still too early to say whether they will ever go in that direction?
I wonder how long until they plan on adding collab features like how hololens could share what the others were seeing. Could see an all mac graphics studio putting this to use so a supervisor could walk around and see peoples work and even 3D models. And could also make it so you could have embargo work happening in the same space.
After a while i decided it was cool and hopefully will inspire a standalone pc vr headset since that is what i would really like and now it seems a little more possible
Great first impressions. I have to say, despite your criticism of the Personas, I find them to be quite incredible, especially since they only seem to take about 25 seconds to create. Yes, they look a tiny bit wonky.. a little overly-blurred or something... BUT, they do an incredible job of translating the emotions and facial movements and even eye movements of the person in the headset. This is the beta version and I'm already very impressed. I can't wait to see what they look like in a couple years! Currently you can puff up your cheeks and make faces, and wink and do all sorts of things that I've never seen any other "avatar" pull off before. Sure, comparing it to live video it looks less realistic.. but isn't it amazing that that's the comparison, instead of to a cartoony Wii Mii character like Meta was suggesting about a year ago? It's very, very impressive to me.
I noticed that you only ever used the finger tap feature, to interact with content and elements in the windows…. Did you also try reaching out and manipulating windows with your hands? Like touching a giant iPad that just so happens to be floating in your environment?
The productivity angle on this is so interesting to me and how it could in theory replace a laptop. But then also the OS is based on iOS and most IDEs don't have a version for this. You would have to additionally buy a macbook and carry it everywhere after spending almost 4000 bucks, if you'd want to code on this.
I have also dabbled in a few other VR headsets. I was hoping this could be used for gaming but doesnt seem like it at least for the moment. Wish apple would have added some features that wouldve blown everyones mind but didnt. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what developers can come up with. Thanks for the review.

Actually your persona looks way better than most I have seen so far, i think its impressive.
Yeah, I was really impressed with how his persona looks.
Yes, his looks better because he's rocking the bald look. It's the frozen hairpiece that looks so bad in other reviewers' videos.
@@carlosdominguez3108 the facial texture looked better, with the amount of product i put in my hair I always have a frozen hairpiece.
Meta realizes this tech doesn't make sense to actually launch to the public until they can deliver their mind-melting full-fat tethered PC powered version shown off most recently in Lex Friedman's 2nd Mark Zuckerberg interview fully on standalone (hopefully w/ late 2025's co-designed w/ LG Quest Pro 2).
That was very cool to see. I agree.
Thank you Mike for taking the time to review the Apple Vision Pro. Like others have commented, while others are respected good to see an actual VR enthusiast review it. Not someone caught up in the Apple hype. I heard you mentioned things no one else has because they're reviewing Apple and not the headset. Thank you
When the world needed him most he came back
Your persona in my opinion is one of the best I've seen, it looks like you looking into a foggy bathroom mirror. But it captured a near similarity especially the definitions in your face.
Just watched this video on the Vision Pro and it was amazing. Review is very accurate - feel the same way: incredible as a new platform, but not for gaming
Wonderful video as always, Mike!
The one thing that blew me away the most was that your hands and arms are in all the virtual environments I mean it’s so immersive it’s insane
I am planning to drive across US next week with it as a test!
What a fantastic review/first impressions! Thanks for sharing.
Finally a review from a real VR user and got alot of info and features that others didn't👍
I’ve watched a lot of Vision Pro reviews and this is by far the best one 🙌
finally a review i was truly waiting for. It was like where is Mike? Is he alright or what?
Yay, I was waiting for this review. Other reviews are mostly from people who haven't worn a headset before and all be like "OMG this is awesome, this is the future, we're all be wearing this 5 years from now!" Yeah right...
As always, absolutely perfectly presented. Thanks Mike
its so surreal to see this headset finally in the hands of the (rich US) public
great to hear this from a XR user's perspective, I can't wait to see where this goes in the future!
Thanks.
Best review I’ve seen. I’m Subscribing. Cheers!
I’m super keen to get one purely for the media experience. Those screens look amazing.
Mike! Nice to see you! Always a pleasure watching your videos
Thank you so much for the ongoing support Carlos. I always enjoy your comments []-)
Out of interest did you try and set up with your Apple ID UK and see how far you’d get?
I appreciate some parts with be region locked 🔐
I'm still using the US account. I don't think I'll be switching until AVP is released in the UK []-)
Great video! I appreciate the expense it took to get it done. Hopefully much more content to follow from you on this headset in the future
Brilliant review, nice to hear an honest opinion at last.
Thanks mate. I'm working on a Quest 3 vs Apple Vision Pro video now []-)
@@VirtualRealityOasis great. Looking forward to it.
I was waiting for your review 😊
Dude I’ve been waiting for your video
I'm so happy you got one , please let me know if you can play population one on it
Now THAT is the review I've been waiting for. So glad I stumbled across it. Thank you!
Best VR reviews available. Thanks!
I think is is a waste of money because the resolution is not that much higher than the quest 3.
how is it adequate? It’s the best screens of any VR headset
I rather have amazing clarity then FOV
Thank you Sir. A very good review, pros and cons.
It's not discountinued. It still gets regularly new features
@@SINfromPLIt is still supported, but discontinued as in they won't order new parts. So once Meta has used up their current inventory, production will end.
Great to see you back Mike the apple headset looks great on top of your head it looks like the best looking headset yet wit the pico 4.
been seeing a lot of comments from "VR enthusiast" in many about AVP videos in their comment section that doesn't even buy AVP and keep trashing on it with no reason whatsoever. so this is the only review from a VR enthusiast that I trust.
Wonder if they will ever lock digital overlays to air tags. Honestly more excited about how the vision might be integrated into their existing tech
Finally, a Real VR Enthusiasts Doing a Good Review Of the Apple Vision Pro.
Good review. For a 1st gen product the tech is pretty impressive. Major props to Apple engineers. Count me in for Vision Pro 2.
Very thorough and insightful. Thank you! =)
You are the first to admit the passthrough, though leaps ahead of the competition, was incredibly disappointing. We were all expecting looking out a clear window, not a tad bit grainy tinted window.
Thank you for a good and honest review...I will stick to my Quest 3, and look forward to the Quest 4
Good because it’s not a gaming headset
First Impressions *
@@harryhollas2004 yeah right and it's not a virtual reality headset either...come on
Does it work with MacBook mini without having an external screen hooked to the Mac mini?
Very nice to see an actual review other than some tech influencer that says 'WOW!' at VR tech demos from 2016.
What quest should I get? Can you plz answer my question.😊
Quest 3 is the best []-)
@@VirtualRealityOasis THANKS
So they made you say it after all. Spatial computing.... Ugh... It's a tough one no matter how many times every blogger says that :)
I have a question: if you throw this headset out of a window how far does it go? Quest forever!
how heavy would it be with the battery built in - seems like a bit of a cheat - or how light would the quest 3 be with the battery separate
It would be around 1kg with the battery []-/
Thanks is a great review. I’ve been especially interested in the FoV
Man that spatial video chapter.
So Black Mirror
@@VirtualRealityOasis Ok thanks. Can't decide whether to get one sent over or wait it out.
Love your dedication to VR
Do you think eventually they might allow use of 3rd party controllers like Quest ones or trackers or do you think it is too much for apple to allow?
Or is it still too early to say whether they will ever go in that direction?
Maybe they would support a third party motion controller in the future? They currently support Xbox and PS5 controllers []-)
I need Help my quest keeps turing off and on I Can't Get in 😭😭😭😭😭
13:29 I know it's a marketing clip but if it's anything like that when using the device then that's pretty damn cool.
Nice one Mike!
I wonder how long until they plan on adding collab features like how hololens could share what the others were seeing. Could see an all mac graphics studio putting this to use so a supervisor could walk around and see peoples work and even 3D models. And could also make it so you could have embargo work happening in the same space.
Nice review. It’s an amazing device I love it. I don’t have any games cause I didn’t buy for that. Working with this it’s a pleasure
You must have watched stereo VR180 video? Obviously it’s not as easy as picking up an iPhone but that is a monster leap over Spatial Video.
After a while i decided it was cool and hopefully will inspire a standalone pc vr headset since that is what i would really like and now it seems a little more possible
Can that replace an iPhone or do you need an iPhone to use it? How's does it work on a Mac computer?
Excellent video, Mike! 👊🏻🍺
Why don’t they move other components to the external battery box?
I noticed that you only ever used the finger tap feature, to interact with content and elements in the windows…. Did you also try reaching out and manipulating windows with your hands? Like touching a giant iPad that just so happens to be floating in your environment?
What’s the difference between spatial videos on the Vision Pro vs Quest 3 if any? Is one better/worse?
