Reminds me of church 50 years ago. The youth leader at our Pentecostal church clearly loved this song more than any other as he was always getting us to sing it. That's probably why it keep on coming back into my head even after all this time. I didn't know then that it was from Psalm 48 and I still don't know what "On the sides of the north" means.
Hello brother, I too learned this song 45 years ago when I began attending a Pentecostal church, and yes the worship leaders there sang it often. I can relate to what you say, for back then I didn't know what "the sides of the north" was referring to, nor did I understand what Zion was.
According to the title, Psalm 48 was written during King David's time by the sons of Korah, who were Levite musicians, which is the period of time in which the term "Zion" came into use.
Mt. Zion, 𝑝ℎ𝑦𝑠𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦, is a hill just east of Jerusalem, where King David brought the Ark of the Covenant, as soon as he became the ruler of all Israel-for King David longed to bring the ark of God, which in essence was where the presence of the Lᴏʀᴅ dwelt from the time of Moses, back to Israel, because during the reign of the previous ruler King Saul, the Ark of God wasn't valued highly. (You can even visit Mt. Zion today, called "the City of David", just a couple hundred yards east of the Old City of Jerusalem outside the Dung Gate, the closest entrance to the Western Wall and Temple Mount).
𝑆𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦, Mt. Zion refers to the spiritual Kingdom where God dwells and reigns (for example, Psalm 132:13 says "For the Lᴏʀᴅ has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling” (132:13). When the writers of Psalm 48 say "the City of our God" is "The City of the Great King," (Ps. 48:2), it's more than just a physical location-they are truly rejoicing that the God of Israel rules over the entire earth (the joy of the whole earth).
"The sides of the north", according to some Bible scholars, refers to the city of Jerusalem, which was physically very close to Mt. Zion and the City of David, and is indeed "The City of the Great King" (meaning Jehovah, the Lᴏʀᴅ). This works well and makes both physical and spiritual sense, and is how most folk probably think when they sing this Psalm.
But several Bible versions add a "twist of light" to Psalms 48:2 by adding these phrases: "Beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth, like the heights of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the Great King." (New International Version) or "Beautiful in loftiness, the joy of all the earth, like the peaks of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the great King." (Berean Bible); or "It is lofty and pleasing to look at, a source of joy to the whole earth. Mount Zion resembles the peaks of Zaphon; it is the city of the great king." (New English Translation). In these cases, Mt. Zaphon refers to the tallest mountain in the entire land of Canaan, which was located 500 km north of Jerusalem in Northern Syria at the entrance to the Orontes River on the Syrian-Turkish border. This was a very famous mountain, known to most folk living anywhere around the region (including Israel and Judah). Mt. Zaphon served as a prominent peak for ship captains to navigate towards, when bringing their ships from the Mediterranean with goods for trade. It was a famous peak, and highly prized for its beauty and majesty throughout the entire Middle East/Syrian/Turkish region. Interestingly, Mt. Zaphon was also connected to the worship of gods (small g), as were some other famous mountains, for in ancient times mountains with tall, majestic peaks that were visually impressive, were thought of as being places where the gods lived. Mount Olympus was the home of Zeus, and Mt.Zaphon, according to Ugaritic texts, was considered the home of Baal.
So the sons of Korah could well be declaring in this Psalm, that YHVH, the God of Israel, the Lᴏʀᴅ, who dwelt in Mt. Zion-spiritually and physically-is far greater than any pagan deities in their own mountains. He is beautiful, and He The Lᴏʀᴅ is the joy of the whole earth!

There is so much packed into that single verse which is sadly incomprehensible to modern people when initially taken at face value. The evangelically orientated youth leaders of my day were not great on old testament theology. I have to conclude that they did not really understand what we were all singing about either but just liked the catchy tune.

Love the arrangements on this! I definitely enjoyed the Jazz approach and the different instruments throughout the duration, that lead at different parts of the arrangements. Definitely love the saxophone and it was a pleasant surprise to hear the organ included.

Thank heaven for 'arranger keyboards'!! I'd never heard this song before - so I listened to Steve and picked a rhythm ('ACOUSTIC JAZZ=144) on my Yamaha 'arranger' and voila! Just like Steve - I was jammin' for 1/2 hour on the tune ~ Thanks, Steve...I love to 'annoy/amaze' the folks after service with such jams! (I use an ancient, but excellent Yamaha P-80 88 key controller playing through my Yamaha arranger...heh heh heh. Ain't technology great?

Pray for peace in Jerusalem. Zion is the joy of the WHOLE earth. Though current events in that region and recent risings in antisemitism are a reason for concern, they will not cause this 'prophecy' to go unfullfilled. Zion is the JOY (not the enemy, etc) of the WHOLE earth!

I actually have recorded many just like this, during my personal devotions unto the Lord. Those songs have a lot of instrumental sections where I just play jazzy worship solos unto the Lord, plus sing the Scriptures. I will post more, as soon as I can. The Gospel is how that Jesus Christ was crucified according to the scriptures for our sins, how he died and was duried, and how he rose from the dead the third day for our justification. The God man Jesus Christ. Who came from eternity and clothed himself with human flesh was born of a virgin, who was overshadowed by the Holy Ghost, he lived a sinless life and died a sacrificial death. This same word of God who was God from the beginning gives life to all men who believe the gospel of Christ. O.S.A.S. Once saved always saved. There is eternal security for the believer because Jesus said "Nobody can snatch you out of my hands." And that nobody includes you. The good news isn't good if it doesn't include eternal security. Remember you can't be unborn and that you are sealed with the Spirit of promise until the day of redemption once you believed. And one who is sealed can't be unsealed. Anyone who preaches that you can lose your salvation if you sin too much or in a certain way is bringing in a damnable heresy and a false gospel and is to be marked and avoided. There is only unity in the truth. Don't fall for Satan's lies and don't listen to Christiandom who teaches that unless you have good works you can't prove you are saved. The proof of my salvation is the profession of my lips. That Jesus Christ is the savior of all men especially those that believe. He paid for ALL my sins not just some. And for all my future sins and current sins. And not even sin can seperate me from his love. I pull forward with a good consious and worship God who has imputed me with the righteousness of Christ according to Romans 4. Yes I am saved apart from works. I can't boast before God of anythng I have done to save me or keep me saved. I boast in God and in Jesus Christ my savior. Amen
