Bless you. I'm just learning to do this for the first time after years of Crochet and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why my stitches were too loose. I was knitting too far away from the tips.

I was a pretty tight knitter when I first started, I even bent some metal needles from strangling them so hard! Then I had to change the way I tension my yarn and knit, because the way I was taught was causing me pain. I still prefer English style knitting, but went from throwing to flicking. I used to kind of hook the yarn with my index finger and drop the needle, but now I knit pretty much the same as the technique you show here. That changed my tension dramatically. I switched technique while I was halfway through knitting a pair of socks, and the second one was so much bigger than the first, I had to frog both and start again! I also think it's worth mentioning that the actual needles can make a big difference. I always size down when I knit with Hiya Hiya Sharps, because I find my tension is much looser on those than it is on Chiaogoo Lace needles. The more blunt the tip, the more I I find myself knitting tighter. I don't use wooden or bamboo needles anymore, but my gauge has felt different when I've used them in the past. There's probably a reason for it, but I don't know what it is. This is why swatching on whatever needles you plan to knit your project with is so important!

Thank you so much I'm advanced crocheting for many years and I've been trying to learn how to knit . I kept giving up . I was wondering what I was doing wrong . I was dropping stitches did not know what I was doing . I did not do any tension to the yarn at all now maybe I can get this going .

Hi Caz, It might be the size of yarn against the needle or just that the yarn doesn't have much bounce to it. Have another watch of this video, and look closely at how you're knitting, you may be able to figure it out. Happy knitting 🧶
I also only use the wood/epoxy coated needles. Metal, plastic, and even bamboo hurt to use eventually. I think those needles encourage looser gauge but ever since I very first started over a decade ago I've been loose but even
You’re not the first knitter I’ve taught who’s like this. If you’re knitting a pattern you can simply opt for a smaller size needle. Sometimes it’s just one of those things. It might change over time, but as you’ve already been knitting for 10+ years it’s unlikely, unless you change the way you hold the yarn to tension it differently. Happy knitting 🧶
@@KnitWithHannah I don't make sweaters yet so gauge hasn't been super crucial and usually just some minor tweaks to the pattern gets me about perfect. I do go down a needle size for superwash yarn that also loosens as you wash/use it. I've also noticed with some yarns like cotton it happens less. I have loose joints (my outer wrist bones don't connect to my hands) so I learned to avoid things that aggravate it and I think also contributes to the loose gauge. I never really worried about it too much until I started on hats which sent me looking for tips
Wellllll for me first im "knitting" with colored pencils 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I wanted to see if this something I could commit to before buying needles. I have so many crafts I do and just never finish or just stop 😅
Ack, yes! Just be willing to maybe knit the first stitch of each row a little tighter, it will look floppy, but usually a few rows later it’s more uniform. Happy knitting 🧶

I've been using chopsticks and i realize that might be the problem bc the width from start to end is different unlike knitting needles 🤔
