    It was so nice to see how much effort the chef makes to provide great food for the sumo wrestlers. The love for his profession and the love for the rikishi! I live 15 minutes away from Arashio beya, so it was extra interesting for me to peep inside and see what we can't see from outside. I'd love to go there for lunch every day! :D

    Now I am properly prepared to try & cook chanko nabe....ingredients; seasonings, how & what order to cook and add each ingredient...I am excited to try it. As noted, it is delicious; nutritious...beneficial to wrestlers and essential to a women's beauty. The biggest challenges will be gathering all the correct ingredients and making chanko nabe in a smaller batch ( for one or two people...fresh is always best ). This was A fun & well presented video. I enjoyed it and learned how to cook this correctly. Thanks to the chef; the wrestlers & the host!

      I eat Chanko alot and at least in my case there is quite a bit of calories in it with all the broth, meat and fat from both that and the marrow. But the most Important thing about it isn't the calories themselves but the nutrients in the stew itself. All those vitamins and minerals need replacing after the intense training, Chanko covers pretty much all of it. :)

What they did to a certain oyakata is really not comparable to what other oyakatas received as a disciplinary measure. I hope this will not alienate other foreigner fans

    I'm going to throw out the obvious, but I firmly believe Chunkonabe is probably ruining the modern rickishi. Too many calories, just to put weight on already beefy athletes. If your weight is your greatest sumo asset, then perhaps you are not receiving the correct training. The rest of the world athletes have moved on to a modern balance nutrition, but the cultural stigma of following a 200 year old tradition is not in the best interest of the stable. Burning up calories is one thing, building muscle, grace, and skill, along with balanced training, is probably the best.

    • @Benjamin_Kraft
      @Benjamin_Kraft 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Of all the issues of current Sumo that is holding the sport back, chanko nabe seems to be the least of those issues. Not an issue at all I'd argue. Now, if you're simply meaning that they eat to much and that too much of the extra weight rikishis put on is effectively dead-weight that don't assist them in the sport, then I might agree, Sumo would maybe do well to reevaluate what kind of bodies their rikishis should aim for. However, chanko nade, the actual dish, has no issues in its most common forms. The nutritional value is tremendous, lots of different fresh vegetables and meat in a nice broth. As a guy who's been training for lots of years and know a little bit about healthy eating, I wish I had the time to make and eat chanko nabe as a staple food. The only issue with chanko nabe is that rikishis eat enormous amounts of it along with enormous amounts of white rice. But the dish itself I see no issues with.
      I think we should focus on the actual issues, like the restrictive and intimidating stable-system that discourages young men to try professional Sumo, bad prevention and treatment/recovery of ringside injuries, the semi-regular bullying scandals, as well as the leadership being too old-fashioned and at times criminally unfair (the treatment of Miyagino/ex-Hakuho in the wake of Hokuseihos bullying is disproportionate and clearly not the same treatment they'd have given any other Oyakata). Not that the JSA would care what any foreign sumo-fans think, but anyway...

    • @the_Texas_Bandit
      @the_Texas_Bandit 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Benjamin_Kraft I agree with the other problems that are far more improvable. However, the subject is Chunkonabe. I read a recent article on our recent Basho winner. His Oyakata made the modest statement that he is an upcoming talent, and that with more experience he should rise quickly. He followed up the statement that he needed to gain an additional 40 kilos to stay competative. ?? 50lbs, to stay competative ? The kid has a fantastic body form, albeit a little thin in the lower body, but putting 50lbs on this kid will slow him down so much. I don't see it. If the rest of the worlds athletes , and as an exfootball player, I can tell you that western coaches would have a stroke if you put on weight thru fat, and not mass thru muscle. I love the sport, king of the hill we called it in Texas.

    • @Benjamin_Kraft
      @Benjamin_Kraft 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@the_Texas_Bandit On that matter we are in agreement, I find it very strange that they don't look to the likes of Hakuho, Chiyonofuji and Futabayama who all of them didn't have a huge amount of body mass (for a rikishi) and still are among the most legendary rikishis of all time. Still, I think cutting down the chanko nabe (and rice) down to a more reasonable calorie intake per day is the thing required in that case, not switching out the dish itself. But I see what you mean, and am in agreement.
